P7 STEM Week

Primary 7 have had such a busy STEM week! It’s been packed. On Monday we did a lego build challenge to build a rocket using exactly 100 pieces. Next we did a build challenge with Coatbridge High to design and build a bridge that could hold as much weight as possible. It had to be a certain height and width and be an attractive design.

We conducted the bottle flip challenge in class. We had to useĀ  a variety of different shapes and sizes of bottles and conduct an experiment to see what shape and size would flip the best.

Then Coatbridge High visited and gave us a maths problem to solve. We had to work out the cost to fill the classroom with malteasers.

We had the Science Centre visit us with great exhibits for us to explore on the human body and they even presenting a disgusting digestion show.

The next day we were visited by ‘The Shape Man’ who showed us how to make a dodecahedron with paper.

It was also Outdoor Classroom Day and we headed to the forest next to complete a technology challenge to build shelters in case it rained. We headed to another forest to complete a Citizen Science tree health survey next.

Finally, a particle physicist visited the class to talk to us about energy sources and answer our many questions.

Outdoor Classroom Day

Primary 7 took part in the worldwide event Outdoor Classroom Day yesterday. Along with thousands of schools across the globe they spent the day learning outside. First primary 7 visited the forest near the school. They risk assessed the area and did some safety checks before joining teams. In their teams they constructed a shelter, encase it rained. They worked really well as a team and loved their dens so much they decided to have lunch in there. Next they walked to the local park, they were lucky with the weather and enjoyed running around in the sun. Their last task was to conduct an OPAL survey on tree health. They found their second forest base and worked in pairs to measure, categorise and assess the health of the local trees. It was a great day!

Sky Academy

Primary 7 had an amazing time at the Sky Academy yesterday. They worked together to decide who would be reporters, editors, producers, and camera operators when creating their very own news report. Their news report was on celebrity culture. The children took the lead and organised the entire report from script, costumes to backgrounds and editing. It was a brilliant opportunity and linked well with their topic- The World of World, where the children have been finding out the skills, qualities and qualifications they would need to pursue different career paths.

P7 buddies help encourage reading in P1

Today the P7 buddies came to visit P1 to encourage the love of reading. Ā We had four different literacy stations. Ā The first one was peer read – P1 read their book first and then they chose a book for their buddy to read to them.

Station 2 was word splat! Ā The children took turns in calling out our common words … then Ā your partner has to hit it with the fly squatter.

Station 3 – Sound hunt. Ā The P7s called out different sounds and the P1s had to find the matching card.

Station 4 – Phoneme boards. Ā Let’s make some CVCs together.

Senior Reading Club!

As the saying goes “Time flies when you are having fun!”

Our first reading club was such a pleasure to hold – the children were so engaged and their love of reading was great to listen to! Ā Each pupil discussed their favourite book, telling us why they enjoyed it, the characters and a brief story outline. Ā I was really impressed with their passion for reading, and it was delightful to hear them all read so confidently a passage from their chosen book with great expression!

We enjoyed some quiet reading time – swapping books with each other and discussing how and why we choose certain books to read. Ā We all agreed that reading the “book blurb” is not always the best idea as it often gives the plot away and that just sitting down and reading the first few pages gives you an idea if the book is interesting and captures your attention.

Over some juice and biscuits the children also had a chance to listen to me reading my favourite book which I have read countless times by myself and with my son Cameron – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling.

I can’t wait for our “spooky” reading session next week!!
