Brodie’s Inspirational Art Prize

A number of Greenfaulds High School pupils had the fantastic opportunity to participate in a series of workshops run by artist Alan Potter to create a Covid themed mosaic project.

The workshops were funded as a reward for Greenfaulds High School Art Department and their talented pupils winning the Brodie’s Inspirational Art and Design Prize through the Friends of the RSA (Schools Art Award)

Below are some of the images of the finished mosaic mounted on the school building and of pupils working on the project with artist Alan Potter.

 DIGITAL SCHOOLS AWARD

Following our recent Digital Schools Award Scotland validation visit, we are delighted to inform our school community that we have been successful in our bid to become a Digital School in Scotland.  Furthermore, we have actually been invited to be a mentor school.  We feel that this is testament to all the hard work and perseverance of our pupils, staff and parents in implementing our Digital agenda.  General Recommendations from the Report are noted below:

Greenfaulds High school is a thriving digital environment, with staff and leaders constantly seeking new ways to enhance learning and teaching. Digital technologies play a key part in their drive for school improvement.  Teachers and leaders have embraced all CLPL opportunities to ensure that skills and knowledge are current and effective.  These included personnel completing courses to support CRIS which they will cascade to colleagues to further enrich skill sets and empower learners.  Learners themselves will also support CLPL delivery, particularly regarding assistive technologies, during future INSET days.

Learners felt confident in digital skills and empowered to achieve individual and collective success.  Indeed, a key strength of the school is how greatly it values the contribution of learners in shaping school improvement. One example lay in the student led creation of the AUP, bringing a bespoke touch to the document. Similarly, the school has a learner driven podcast featuring topical items such as social justice and Cop26 – manifesting the espoused school values.

Digital technologies are prevalent across the school and some of the most powerful narratives about their application came from learners with additional support needs, explaining how access to assistive tools transformed their engagement with the curriculum.  Especially heartening was the discovery that such tools were being utilised in more than one subject.  Effective transfer of skills ensured that the learner experience was enhanced across the school day and not limited to a certain period. Moreover, the learner articulated how current skill might be useful beyond school.  In Greenfaulds HS, preparation for the world of work certainly included a rich, digital dimension.

Learners however were not alone in their appreciation of digital tools, staff spoke enthusiastically about the motivational benefits, the capacity for consolidation of key facts, the ease and diversity of formative assessment and the efficient nature of communication. Multiple examples of such were provided.

In conclusion, it was clear that the school community of Greenfaulds HS were working together successfully to continue their positive journey in digital development.

 S1 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

The Social Subjects faculty enjoyed a Geography trip on the Fife Coastal Path walking from Crail to Anstruther. For the most part we had glorious sunshine and only a short light shower on the walk. Pupils felt challenged on the walk but it was worth it in the end for a visit to the Anstruther Fish Bar.

Everyone was a credit to themselves and the school. See the video below:

Matt, author of many books about famous footballers, used the session with S1 pupils to talk about using a passion for the subject when writing.  We would like to extend our thanks to both John and Matt.

“Very interactive and fun” (Daniel, S2)

“Really entertaining to hear about how he (Matt) started writing.” (Mia, S1)

North Lanarkshire Schools Read to Succeed

North Lanarkshire Schools Read to Succeed

Following the transition from primary to secondary school, our promise to you is that the North Lanarkshire Secondary School you have trusted with your child’s education, will do all they can to ensure that this experience is both enjoyable and successful.

In North Lanarkshire Schools, under the Scottish Attainment Challenge, we aim to make reading for pleasure a priority in our bid to ensure excellence and equity in our schools. We are fortunate enough to have dedicated school librarians and English Departments across North Lanarkshire Secondary Schools who provide excellent support and encouragement to all pupils to help develop and promote reading for pleasure.

As part of that commitment, the North Lanarkshire Schools Read to Succeed pledge aims to get our S1 pupils hooked on reading for pleasure. With funding from the Scottish Attainment Challenge every S1 pupil will be gifted a book with no cost to the pupil or the school. This book will be chosen from an online catalogue of texts suitable for a wide range of interests and ability levels.

Reading for pleasure has been proven to have a huge range of benefits for children, ranging from improved exam results and literacy levels, through to good mental health. This is our 4th year running Read to Succeed and we want pupils, parents/carers, teachers and librarians to participate in the North Lanarkshire Schools Read to Succeed pledge to help ensure our pupils are reaching their full potential in terms of literacy.

We are asking you as a parent or carer to play an active role in encouraging your child to read for pleasure and ensure that they are actually reading, simply by talking regularly with them about what they are reading.

Advice on how to encourage children to read for pleasure is available from The Scottish Book Trust website: http://www.scottishbooktrust.com/reading/parents.

If you want any further advice on helping your child choose books or how you can motivate them to read, please feel free to get in touch with the librarian by phoning the school.  Our librarians are happy to help.

With your support, we can help your child ‘Read to Succeed’ and maximise their potential.

Yours sincerely,

Terry Cowan

Education Support Officer (Literacy)
