MABEY FUN ENGINEERING AT GREENFAULDS

Over the last few months, we have been working with Mabey FUN Engineering on the Mabey STEM Education Initiative.  Our learners have worked through a series of challenges, learing loads about engineering through using Lego.  We’ve been building different types of pulleys and working out how their load is worked out, learning about and building different types of bridges and looking at alternative power sources.  We’ve had to use Maths skills we didn’t know we had!

Our thanks go Billy McCormick, Engneering Manager at Mabey for choosing us for this pilot scheme.

We are looking forward to building on our partnership next year.

S3 CORE SKILLS AND ACHIEVE

The S3 Core Skills and Achieve class got together and organised and completed a Sponsored Walk up Meikle Bin in April. The money they raised funded an end of year trip for them. On thursday 14th June, both classes attended Sumerlee museum, where they got a trip on a tram and went down the mine. Afterwards we worked on our team skills at the bowling alley, before enjoying a lunch at Pizza Hut. We ended the day by orienteering at Drumpeillier Park.

OUR YPI EXPERIENCE

Lia Barlow, Eilidh McIntyre and Abby Ward

The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative YPI is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and their local community. Each participating school each year is responsible for directing a £3000 YPI grant to a small local charity of their choice. This is done through a unique programme of teamwork, research and competition.

During May and June, we were working with Chris’s House for our YPI presentation. Chris’s House is a charity based in Wishaw, which aims to help anyone suffering with suicidal thoughts. They also aim to help the victims’ families, friends, and other loved ones. We chose Chris’s House because they are an effective local charity, and mental health is getting more and more common amongst the young people in our local area and we would like to make this more known. Being a small charity we were really pleased for them as the £3000 will be a great boost to their funds.

When we got into the finals we were really nervous and excited at the same time. When the winner was announced we were absolutely speechless. We never thought that we would win, considering how great the other presentations were.

In the future we plan to keep supporting Chris’s House and attend as many fundraisers as we can.

Opening of “The Courtyard” at Greenfaulds High School

Opening of “The Courtyard” at Greenfaulds High School

Jack Guild handing the opening plaque to Head Teacher Linda Park

On Friday 1st June there was an official opening ceremony of the courtyard at Greenfaulds High School. This was the culmination of a project in conjunction with Morrison Construction that started last May. The pupils of Bruce House and the Greenfaulds DofE group all worked together to produce tables and benches to enable the space to be utilised as an external classroom and social space.

The Greenfaulds Go Green project was won with design ideas supplied and costed by the Bruce House team of Jack Guild, Fraser Menzies, Aaron Urquhart and Charlie Redmond. Their vision was then passed over to have the plans drawn up by senior members of the DofE group and then everyone from Bruce House and the DofE Group who had time dived in to create tables, benches and planters from recycled old scaffolding boards.

Jack Guild attended the opening ceremony in two capacities. He was the project manager and he is also currently attending work experience with Morrison Construction and attended as their official representative.

Jack said “This project has taken a very long time to complete but I am very proud of the final results. I have been working closely with Jim Johnston and Caitlin Quinn who have helped out with advice and materials throughout the last 12 months. The effort put in by the DofE Group and Bruce House members to produce the goods has been fantastic!”

Another table and two benches were created and donated to Redburn School for their new memorial garden

Depute Head Teacher Martin Burns said “The donation of the table and benches are a wonderful addition to our newly formed memorial garden. This provides both pupils and staff of Redburn School with the opportunity to access a quiet, contemplative space. We are very grateful to the staff and pupils at Greenfaulds High School for their generosity.”
