NLC UPDATE: STRIKE ACTION IN SCHOOLS AND NURSERY CLASSES

Strike action in schools and nursery classes: 26 – 28 September 2023

Unite the Union has notified the council that its members who support the running and operation of primary schools, secondary schools, ASN schools and early years establishments, will be striking on Tuesday 26, Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 September 2023 in relation to the proposed pay award.

National discussions are ongoing and the situation is being monitored and may be subject to change.

The strike action means that a number of primary schools (including nursery classes) and secondary schools (including LCSCs within schools) will be closed on these three dates and will reopen on Friday 29 September 2023.

Please note that schools will have closed for the arranged September holiday weekend on Friday 22 and Monday 25 September, which means that some parents/carers will need to make additional alternative arrangements for childcare if your school is affected by the strike action.

The following schools will be closed to children and young people on Tuesday 26, Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 September 2023:

Primary schools and nursery classes

  • Allanton Primary School and Nursery Class, Shotts

  • St. Aidan’s High School, Wishaw
  • St. Ambrose High School/Buchanan High/Pentland School campus, Coatbridge

Head teachers will be in touch directly regarding school work for pupils affected.

Please note that all other primary, secondary and ASN schools and Family Learning Centres will remain open to staff and pupils from Tuesday 26 September 2023 following the September holiday weekend.

The impact of the industrial action may mean that you will need to consider additional childcare arrangements over these dates.

Families in receipt of free school meals on the basis of low income will be reimbursed via a direct payment to bank accounts or via Paypoint voucher to postal addresses which may take up to five working days.

Please note that soup and sandwiches are the only meals that will be available in all family learning centres, nurseries and schools over the three-day strike period.

This is a situation that may be subject to change and parents/carers will be informed at the first opportunity if there are further changes to the school day.

REMINDER: MEET THE TEACHER EVENT TODAY P2-P7

In order to encourage partnership working between the school and wider community, we would like to invite parents and carers of P2-P7 pupils into the school. This will allow you to meet the teachers and visit your child’s classroom. We hope this will allow you to feel more involved in the life and work of the school. You can now begin to ‘put a face to the name’.

The school will be open on Wednesday 6 September between 3.15 and 4.45pm. There will be three 20 minute ‘drop in’ sessions to enable parents and carers to visit more than one teacher in the school. The times are as follows:

(1) 3.15- 3.35pm

(2) 3.45- 4.05pm

(3) 4.15- 4.35pm

Please note that this event is not an opportunity for parents or carers to discuss their own child’s individual progress or discuss any concerns. This is an informal and relaxed event to allow your child to show you their learning environment. We look forward to welcoming you into the school.

Thank you,

Ed Clinton

Head Teacher
