Scotland Street School

Last week we went on a trip to Scotland Street School in Glasgow. We were there to find out what it was like to be in a Victorian classroom. Let us tell you, it was not what we expected and it was not at all nice!

First we got asked to dress up in Victorian outfits. Then a Victorian style teacher took us into her Victorian classroom. She treated us like Victorian children…although, luckily she never used the belt or the cane on us. She showed us a dunses cap which was used to embarrass naughty children. Scott Adamson got a chance to wear it, luckily we were just acting! We did some literacy and some arithmetic, it was really hard and we wrote on slates with a slate pencil and paper using an ink pot and steel pointed pens! The teacher was so scary….we are so glad we have such nice teachers here! The lessons were really boring and not fun and active like we get at Chryston. We were glad when the lady told us she was acting….she was quite, in fact, no, she was very scary!

Take a look at some photos of us in the Victorian classroom….

Review of the week ending 23rd November 2012

This week we have been learning about apostrophes, where to put them and where not to put them e.g they are =they’re. We did dictation with apostrophes and we found it cool but for some of us it was tricky. After doing diction we had a spelling bee with our words it was fun.

In maths we calculated the distance from Glasgow to 5 other countries e.g Glasgow to Los Angeles is 4970 miles. Next we put the distances in order from shortest to longest. In class we calculated 0.2 miles from the school for park & stride distance and made a map showing the 0.2 distance round school. We will issue this to everyone.

For health and well-being we did some bulling & conflict work and how you would feel to be bullied. We did an activity as a boys team and a girls team and we had to do what you would do if you saw someone being bullied.

It was good to learn how you would feel to be bullied, it was a good way to learn what to do and what not to do so all the class enjoyed it.

That is just some of the things primary 6 have been up to this week, bye.

The Victorians

In class our interesting interdisciplinary is… THE VICTORIANS!!!!!!!!!!

What we have learned

We have learned many things about the victorians, this is some of the interesting things we have learned so far.

*Queen Victoria was on the throne for 63 years and 216 days and was the longest British monarch to be on the throne.
*She mourned for nearly 10 years after her husbands death.
*She wore black a lot since the death of her husband.
*Children had tough jobs and they didn’t get a lot of money for their work.

We wrote dairies and pretended to be a victorian child and we were learning about their jobs and their lifestyle.

We are lucky enough to have organised a class trip to Scotland Street School in Glasgow and we are all looking forward to it, we wonder what it will be like.

What we are looking forward to

We are looking forward to many things in our victorian topic but we are looking forward to going to Scotland Street School and learning what school was like back then the most.

We will keep you up to date on our victorian topic.

Hello world!

Hello and welcome to our blog. We appreciate you coming to visit. In our first blog we thought we would start at the beginning and give you a round up of all that has happened so far in primary 6.

When we came back we were delighted to find a new pupil and have a new teacher. Our teacher is very nice and makes our learning fun and we learn a lot. Our new pupil is a boy and he is funny and kind.

In maths we learned about money and how in different situations you use different things like notes, pounds and pennies and credit card and debit cards and gift cards and much more. When we were learning about money another new pupil came to join our class. She is very tall, she is a good actress and she’s funny.

In language we were learning about the new reading strategies and spelling sounds. So far we have done two sounds and they are a and e and we are learning about i and o in term two.  There are so many different ways to write the same sounds!  Not only that but we have been learning new spelling rules and strategies to help us in our writing.

In our Interdisciplinary we learned about Germany. We learned about the foods, the culture, and the famous attractions and lots of other interesting things. We were delighted to finish our theme off with a fantastic assembly.

At the start of this term we were delighted to get another  pupil. We now have 12 boys and just 9 girls in our class and we now have 3 pairs with the same names. It can get confusing!!

So that is term 1! We are now in term two and plan to bring you frequent updates of all that is happening in our class! Thanks for visiting!
