S3 Romeo and Juliet Performances

Zeffirelli, Luhrmann, Olivier, Leigh – ain’t got nothing on Miss Burns’ S3 class who worked tirelessly for weeks to put on their own group performances of their favourite scenes from the world’s most famous love story (yes even more famous than Twilight!). Props were made, costumes were fashioned, lines were learned by heart. Former pupil, Fraser Burns once again lent his expertise to coaching and supporting pupils in their rehearsals. An absolutely tremendous effort from the S3! Bravo!

Two interpretations of the famous death scene.

Best group performance for Jamie Scott and David James

Joint Best Actor Award

Best Overall Performance for Alex Cameron – well done!

Best Actress for Rachel O’Neill

Endeavour Award for Daniel Beck

Best Costumes

Best Props

Best Group Preparation

Some action shots – the Capulets and Montague fight scene where they bite thumbs at each other and Friar Lawrence (looking mighty cool).

Miss Burns and Fraser were very impressed with everyone’s effort in putting on their little drama from the acting and costumes to the group work and respect. Well done!

“You can’t lose if you don’t play the game…” – Trip to Glasgow’s Theatre Royal

S2 and S3 enjoyed a trip to Glasgow’s Theatre Royal to see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s wonderful version of the classic tale of young love (or gang story, depending on your point of view…). It was many of our young people’s first experience of live theatre and they were delighted by the wonderful and powerful performances. Tickets were being taken home as souvenirs for memory boxes. They were impeccably behaved. Miss Robertson may even have had a tear in her eye at the end but sssshhh, don’t ruin her rep! 🙂

Annual S1 Panto Trip

Our traditional S1 panto outing to a non-traditional panto took place on Tuesday 18th December. Once again, Mrs Robertson managed the incredible feat of getting 90 S1 pupils safely to Glasgow (and back again, of course!) Mrs Robertson and Mrs Chalmers were most impressed with the impeccable behaviour and the response from the pupils. The Tron Theatre always push boundaries with their modern interpretation of traditional pantos and reflect issues in the world today. It is always so heartening to see our young people so open-minded to and supportive of difference – never lose this!

Annual Burns’ Museum Trip

Our annual Burns’ Museum Trip in preparation for our Burns’ Supper on Wednesday 6th February 2019, took place on Tuesday 27th November. Pupils from across S1 and S2 participated in a variety of activities including a Tam O’Shanter drama and public debating workshop. Pupils were so enthusiastic and engaged – everyone who worked with the pupils (and even members of the public who chatted with them) complimented them on their participation and brilliant behaviour. Well done Burns bairns!

We are delighted to share with you a lovely email from an ex-teacher who was visiting the Museum alongside our pupils. We are so proud of our young people and how they represented themselves, the school and the community!

“Hullo there…I would be grateful if you could pass this on to your head teacher….I am a retired teacher and was visiting the Burns museum yesterday. It soon became obvious that there was school visit going on and as an ex-teacher I duly was watching the kids. I was impressed by their attentive nature to the exhibitions on view and the conversations I had with some of them. All were polite and well mannered, I even ended up helping a few identifying some of the ‘personalities’ on view. Indeed their presence enhanced the day for me…
Yours aye Scott Murray
ex-Alva Academy….”
