Three S4 pupils from Calderhead High School, Carly Ogilvie, Caitlin Bonnes and Dale Whitefield, recently participated in a Tree of Knowledge residential weekend on the Isle of Arran with pupils from other North Lanarkshire secondary schools. The group explored topics such as dealing with stress, facing fears, learning about mind-sets and building resilience. They also enjoyed some great activities including an “On- Shore day”, abseiling and a quiz. Our pupils had a great time and learned some valuable life skills.

Visit to the GFT
S2 Modern Language pupils attended the Glasgow Film Theatre recently to watch the acclaimed French film, Un Sac de Billes (A Bag of Marbles).
Based on the famous memoirs of Joseph Joffo, this film tells his incredible story as a young Jewish boy living in France during the Second World War. When he was ten years old, his father gave him and his brother Maurice some money and a map and sent them on a dangerous mission to escape Nazi-occupied Paris to the demilitarised zone in the South. The boys suffered many hardships and witnessed horrific acts.
Authors Live
Pupils from Calderhead High School, accompanied by Ms Faulds and Mrs Lumsden, had the opportunity to join the panel at the recent Authors Live event at the BBC in Glasgow.
Authors Live is a series of live webcasts filmed by BBC Scotland Learning and presented in partnership with the Scottish Book Trust. They feature some of the most prominent authors, poets and illustrators, and the webcasts can be accessed on the BBC website.
This latest Authors Live event talked about unheard voices in the writing industry and the barriers that stop diverse voices from being heard. The panellists included Alex Wheatle, author of the award-winning Crongton sequence, Scottish rapper Dave Hook from hip hop band Stanley Odd, and Anni Cameron, poet. As well as the discussion, pupils enjoyed raps from Dave Hook and Alex Wheatle reading from his latest novel ‘Straight Outta Crongton’. S4 pupil, Heather Duncanson, asked the panel whether they felt that they had to be role models for teenagers and you can see their response on the BBC site. Pupils were gifted books and were delighted to have these signed by the author and poets.
Pupils were also treated to a tour of the BBC after the event. They enjoyed lunch in the BBC canteen and had great fun spotting famous faces. They also managed to see the newsroom and the various departments, including BBC Bitesize, which will be familiar to our senior pupils preparing for prelims at the moment.
We would like to thank the Scottish Book Trust for choosing our school to attend this event and to the BBC (especially our excellent guide, Kimberley, who was a font of knowledge about the BBC).

The Maths Department in Calderhead also took part in an online Sumdog Competition for all S1 and S2 pupils, with S3 to S6 pupils taking part in a number of team based problem solving competitions.
Pupils Get Energised
S2 pupils participated in a “Get Energised” Investigation Day at the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride recently and learned about renewable energy by participating in workshops where they had the opportunity to build their own hydro turbine, and engineer a wave technology model.
S4 Physics pupils also enjoyed a Challenge day at the Museum, where they got the chance to learn more about solar, wind, hydro and wave power by conducting experiments and meeting challenges. They also met high-profile industry experts.
“Get Energised” is a programme encouraging school pupils to explore, discover and understand renewable energy and is facilitated by the National Museum of Scotland with funding from the ScottishPower Foundation.
S4 History Students are “Digging In”
S4 National 5 History students attended the “Digging In” Project on Tuesday, 6th of December.
The Digging In Project has replicated trenches from the Great War by recreating a section of Allied and opposing German trenches in Pollok Park, Glasgow.
The reconstructions draw on a variety of sources, including archaeological excavations carried out in France and Belgium by the University of Glasgow. In the reconstructed trenches, pupils were able to gain an insight into what life was like for soldiers in WW1 – not just the violence of war but also the mundane challenges of daily life in the trenches.
Girls into Physics & Engineering:
Mr Jack and six S3 girls recently attended an event for girls interested in physics at George Watson’s College to find out more about careers and further studies in physics and engineering. It was attended by schools all over Scotland with activities run by universities and companies who employ physicists.
