Food Bank Donations

Foodbank Image

Don’t forget to bring in your donations for this year’s Foodbank appeal!

The foodbank collections began on 6th December and will finish on 17th December.

Mr Purdie’s S3 Modern Studies class have been learning about all inequality in the U.K. , including how severe the poverty issue is. They would like to give the people in need some food parcels. The class have decided they will have a food bank collection for their local foodbank, the Trussel Trust Foodbank in Airdrie. This class has organised a meeting with the head teacher to explain why they are donating, creating posters and describing why it’s a problem which has to be fixed immediately and they are trying to raise awareness of this in their local area.

Their donations are being collected in the school, with points being awarded to the house to which each pupil who donates belongs. This will help involve a lot more of the pupils as the house with the most points at the end of the year receive prizes.

Pupils can put their donations in boxes which are situated at the school office. Pupils are trying to involve the local community as well as just the pupils in the school. The class are taking donations such as cereal, rice, and tinned food including tomatoes, fruit, soup, pasta, veg, meat, beans etc. Also toiletries would be helpful such as feminine products, toilet paper, shampoo and shower gel. If every pupils in the school donated one item there would be 500 meals to people who are starving throughout the day and night, but if everybody donated 2 items there would be 1000 items donated, this would feed a lot of people who are suffering from starvation.

Children in Need 2019

Calderhead High School held a talent show in the Assembly Hall on Thursday, 14th November to raise funds for Children in Need. Our School Captains, Kirsty and Brianna, hosted the event and were ‘puntastic’ – they definitely have a career as a comedy double-act!

What a wide breadth of talent we have here at Calderhead: Heather, Logyne, Carly, Lauren, Andrew, and Jennifer all sang beautifully; Ellyn and Heather played the piano magnificently; Caitlyn and Nicholas perfomed moving songs accompanied by some excellent guitar playing, and we also enjoyed hearing Caitlyn and Ryley on pipes and drum.

Special mention must also go to our brave pupils and staff who endured getting their legs waxed to help raise funds.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

christmas-boxCalderhead High School has a long history of supporting good causes. Once again we will be supporting the Blythswood Trust Shoe Box Appeal as part of the RME curriculum.

We are looking for toiletries, toys, gloves, hats, scarves and any other suitable items that would be a welcome gift for children and adults. Sweets are also welcome but the expiry dates must be seen and must be ‘best before’ March 2020. No chocolate, biscuits or cakes please. If you prefer to donate money instead that would also be welcome , as postage for the boxes needs to be paid.

All donations are gratefully received.

Charity Day at Calderhead

Charity football matchPupils and staff were very charitable on Thursday, 20th September, when everyone paid to wear their own clothes instead of uniform all day.

Staff were treated to a MacMillan Cancer Support coffee-morning at interval, with some excellent cakes and other baking. Special thanks must go to the Shotts Co-op and Bells Food Group for their donations.

This was followed by a charity football match in the afternoon where pupils and staff watched S4/5 pupils play a senior pupil/staff team. The all pupil team won with an impressive 4-2 score. The match was ticketed and raised an impressive £400 for the charity, Chris’s House. Pupils have also set up a just-giving page for donations to this charity.
