Autism Awareness Week

Autism weekWorld Autism Awareness Week runs from 27th March to 2nd April.

Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them.

We’ve been marking World Autism Awareness Week in the school by showing  videos in the school library and providing specialist training for staff.

If you would like more information, please see our Additional Support Needs page on the website.

Poppy Scotland Letters Home

poppy competitionS3  History pupils participated in the Poppy Scotland ‘ Letters Home’ competition last term. This competition commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Pupils were asked to write a letter home as though they were soldiers fighting at the front and were encouraged to think about sharing their experiences, emotions and describing the environment they were in, as well as the impact of their words on the letter’s recipient.

The class recently received certificates marking their participation. Well done everyone.

Cross Country

It has also been a busy time for our cross country runners. Two teams from Calderhead High School participated in the Scottish Schools Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Dechmont Law on 5th March and contended with mud, biting wind, freezing rain and undulating ground to finish the course in good time.

Rotary Club Technology Challenge

S2 pupils Bekki, Emma, Lewis, Emma, Erin, Jordan, Kirstin and Amy and senior pupils, Ceinwyn, Dean, Jason, James, Kate and Samantha recently competed in the annual Rotary Club Technology Challenge held at Kilsyth Academy.

The four teams from Calderhead High School had to design a remote controlled vehicle which would fit under a bridge and clear debris from a pipe. All teams thoroughly enjoyed designing, testing and creating their vehicles and the opportunity to try out some new tools. All pupils represented the school incredibly well. It’s worth noting that 64% of our participants were female, more than any other school.

You also help to support our school – every £1 you spend will earn 20p for our school in Scholastic Rewards.

There’s never any obligation to order but if you would like to buy anything, you can order online and pay  by credit or debit card and don’t forget to enter the number of World Day Book tokens at the checkout to claim your £1 off.

If you choose ‘school delivery’ you will benefit from free post and packing to the school – please remember to add the pupil’s name and class. The books will then be delivered to the school and given to your child.
