To mark Deaf Awareness Week from 14 to 18th May 2018, we showed deaf awareness videos and had other information available in the library. S3 pupils Matthew and Amber were also delighted to receive a well-deserved Endeavour Award nomination from the West Scotland Deaf Children’s Society for their work in creating and presenting a whole school assembly last year. Well done!

Donations for Malawi – First Aid Kits

Mr Leitch and four senior pupils (Morgan Lynch, Heather McCallum, Kate Sutherland and Elizabeth Gentleman) are due to undertake a visit to Malawi on 5 June 2018. They have a couple of extra suitcases booked on the flight so they can take some additional first aid supplies.

Mr Leitch plans to take basic first aid items such as plasters, bandages, antiseptic wipes and sprays, anti bacterial hand gel and so on for first aid kits  which can then be distributed to the Girls Go For Health coordinator.

We’re looking for donations of items for the kits and would ask pupils to donate as much as possible by  1st June at the latest.

Sad News – Mr Burgess

It is with great sadness that today we mark the loss of Mr Roy Burgess who passed away last night surrounded by his well loved family and friends.

Mr Burgess worked at Calderhead High School for almost 40 years first as Principal Teacher of Chemistry, then as Assistant Head Teacher before taking up the post of Depute Head Teacher of Senior school.

For those of us lucky enough to have known and worked with him he will be remembered as being a great Chemist, an outstanding Teacher, a loyal friend and mentor. A raconteur, a fisherman and above all else a true gentleman.

For the many pupils fortunate enough to have been guided under his tutelage he will be remembered with great fondness for his compassion, his sense of humour, his loyalty and his unfaltering commitment to every pupil at Calderhead High School.

On behalf of all pupils and collegues past and present of Calderhead High School we would like to express our sincere sympathy to Janette, Scott, Linzi and Ivy.

Easter Cake Competition

S3 pupils participated in an Easter cake competition earlier on 19th April and produced some beautiful cakes. The competition was judged by Stephanie Roth, Head of Department at Bells Food Group and our headteacher, Mr Robertson. The standard of cakes was extremely high and it was very difficult to select the prize winners.

500 Words Competition

500 words Pupils in S1 and S2 were encouraged to participate in the BBC’s “500 Word” competition recently. This competition was devised by Chris Evans to get children excited about reading and writing, no matter what their ability. Entrants must submit a story of 500 words or less and this is now one of the most successful story-writing competitions in the world. Three quarters of a million children have taken part over the years. Pupils met with Mr Reilly in the library at lunchtime and created some wonderful stories on all sorts of different themes: sentient computers, crime stories, mysteries, and superheroes, to name but a few.

We also decided to award prizes for the best stories and held an event in the school on 22 March which was attended by some of the authors and their parents and carers. It was a very difficult choice but we eventually awarded Jonathan Hayburn first prize for his thrilling crime story. Lee McCormick was awarded second place for his moving story about evacuees and Andrew Prentice came third with his story about what happened one Thursday…A big thank you to pupils, parents and staff who attended and celebrated the exceptional contribution of all our pupils.

World Book Day 2018

Sadly, the heavy snow prevented us celebrating World Book Day on 1 March and we had to reschedule some of the events planned. WBD EventHowever, we did manage to rearrange the ‘Book and Biccie’ lunchtime session in the school library and it was a lovely way to celebrate the joy of reading (and biscuits!) at the end of term.

Share a Story winnersPupils were also invited to take part in a “Share a Story” competition by submitting a review of their favourite book and why they recommended that everyone should read it. There were many fabulous reviews and Mrs Lumsden and Ms Faulds struggled to decide the winner. However, they agreed that Kevin’s review of the Skulduggery Pleasant series should win first prize and Lauren and Jack were worthy runners up with their excellent reviews. Thank you to Mrs Galloway for presenting the prizes.
