Children in Need 2020

Rounders 2020UPDATE: Well done to Calderhead High School’s  Captains and Prefects team who raised £671.01 for Children in Need!

They organised a dress down day and Rounders Festival for BBC Children in Need on Friday, 13th November. Staff and pupils  braved the inclement Shotts weather to play spirited games of rounders in their year groups and a great time was had by all. Well done to everyone who organised and participated in the fundraising activities.

Parents and carers can help the fundraising effort by donating at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/calderheadhsprefectteam

Cross Country

It has also been a busy time for our cross country runners. Two teams from Calderhead High School participated in the Scottish Schools Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Dechmont Law on 5th March and contended with mud, biting wind, freezing rain and undulating ground to finish the course in good time.

Teams from S1 –S3 also participated in the North Lanarkshire Schools Cross Country on 16th March, again in very wet conditions. Well done to all the participants, particularly for coping with such challenging conditions. The S1 Girls “A” team finished 12th, the S1 Girls “B” 27th,  the S1 Boys 21st, and the S2 Boys 15th. Well done everyone!

Law and District Amateur Athletic Club

There is a proposal to set up a section of Law and District AAC in Shotts, based in Calderhead High School. There will be a parents/supports meeting in Calderhead High School at 6:30pm on Wednesday 28th September. We ask that if anyone who thinks they can offer support to come along.

Also if you think your child may be interested in taking part then please come along so that we can judge the likely success of this initiative. We think that this is a great opportunity to work with a very successful and nurturing club as part of our expanding sports hub.

Interhouse Quiz

Staff and pupils took part in our first ever InterHouse Quiz on Wednesday afternoon. The quiz was organised and facilitated by our S6 pupils and included a number of general knowledge questions. Bonus points were awarded to the House whose pupils had the most school planners with them.

Everyone participated enthusiastically and congratulations to House Fleming, who won the Interhouse Quiz Cup.

Special mention also to House Lochhead, who came first at the Sports Day in June and were presented with the Interhouse Sports Cup after the quiz.

Golf Champion

Eilidh Golf TrophyCongratulations to S6 pupil, Eilidh Crawford, on her recent golfing successes.

Eilidh won the The Stephen Gallacher Scratch Trophy at the East of Scotland Summer Meeting and went on to win the East of Scotland Girls’ Championship the next day!

As well as forming part of the Mid Lothian girls’ team who won the Cuthbertson Cup, she was also part of the team who won the Scratch Trophy at the Morison Millar event.

Eilidh has also been invited to play in a friendly with the East team against a Spanish international team.

Well done, Eilidh!

NLC Schools Athletics Championships

The first day of the North Lanarkshire Athletics Championships took place on Thursday 2nd June and the Calderhead High pupils  who participated all did very well and conducted themselves fantastically. They competed against pupils from every school in the authority and we are delighted to have won the following medals:

  • Gold for Reece Cordiner, S3, in the Javelin, and
  • Silver for Ewan Nelson, S2, in the Discus.

Well done to everyone who took part!

Charity Football Match

On Friday 1st April the Princes Trust XL4 group at Calderhead High organised a charity football match between the staff and seniors boys versus S3/S4 boys in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness and Monklands Intensive Care Unit. The final score was 7-3 with the Teachers/Seniors being the winners.

Before the event the XL4 Group sold breast cancer awareness badges and negotiated donations of water from Shotts Co-Op and a Banner from Mr Strang. Each of the group member had tasks to complete including one of them dressing up as a Lion – the new school mascot!

On the day we had a non-uniform day with stalls selling crisps, cakes and hot dogs. Mrs Buchanan also donated an excellent cake for raffle. It was a fantastic event with the group raising £700!

The XL4 group would like to thank all who participated, donated and helped out on the day.
