Fairtrade Fortnight!

As Fairtrade Fortnight comes to an end we want to share with you everything we have been doing to promote Fairtrade within Calderbank!

Primary 1/2/3/4 began by learning about what Fairtrade is and then created posters to promote and encourage others to buy Fairtrade products. They then gave out Fairtrade information leaflets to people who passed by as they walked around the village and distributed Fairtrade stock it information leaflets and window stickers to two shops in the local community. Here, Primary 1/2/3/4 asked store managers whether or not they stocked Fairtrade products and spoke to them about the importance of buying these. After giving us a few free samples of Fairtrade chocolate, the store managers received ‘Fairtrade Stock It’ leaflets from the children, encouraging them to stock additional Fairtrade items such as sugar, tea and coffee. After their visit, the class watched ‘My Fairtrade Adventure’ and learned where cocoa comes from. They then used their free Fairtrade chocolate to make brownies. Primary 3 / 4 then wrote a persuasive letter to the store managers to encourage them to follow through with their promises of stocking Fairtrade products.

Our school Fairtrade committee then helped to organise and host ‘Fairtrade Fruity Thursday’ where the children paid £1 and in return received Fairtrade fruit skewers dipped in Fairtrade chocolate. This was a great success and helped to raise awareness of the varied Fairtrade fruits, chocolate and products available to buy in their local supermarkets.

P1-4 Celebrate Shrove Tuesday!

Primary 1-4 have been learning about Shrove Tuesday and why we eat pancakes on this day! After writing a little bit about it in their jotters, the children then had the chance to choose some happy and healthy toppings for their pancakes! After that, they read ‘Rhino’s Don’t Eat Pancakes!’ and designed their own Wanted posters to help find the missing, pancake loving, purple rhino!

Viking Drama with Primary 1-4

As part of their Viking topic, Primary 1-4 have been using facial expression, body language, thought bubbles and speech bubbles in their Still Images to show what their characters are thinking and feeling. Here are some photographs of the children in action! Note: the theme was ‘A Viking Raid’ – that’s why we have some scary, angry faces!  See if you can tell where the Vikings might be raiding!
