Research shows children who stay a healthy weight tend to be fitter, healthier, better able to learn, and are more self-confident. They’re also much less likely to have health problems in later life.

*However, it should be noted that poor body image is a growing concern among children, and young people. Research shows that over-focusing on weight, can be stigmatising and can have adverse effects on mental-health. For more information, see ‘Eating Disorders‘ under ‘Wellbeing‘.

5 key ways you can help your child maintain a healthy weight:

  • be a good role model
  • encourage 60 minutes, or more, of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity each day
  • keep to child-size portions and eat less processed meals, drinks and snacks
  • decrease screen time
  • ensure adequate amount of sleep

*see section ‘Importance of Sleep’
