Good morning everyone! This is our final week of learning from our class page. For the last two weeks of term, we direct you to the Health Week page where there are many activities for you to enjoy and take part in. There is a range of activities from Q and A’s, our famous talent show, working out Disney Style, football skills with a local player, dance tutorials, cooking demonstrations with Oakwood Cookery, fitness sessions with local athletes and instructors, cooking and baking challenges and more!

Health Week 2020

Health Week is always an active time so please remember to log your exercise and activities on Travel to Tokyo.  Travel Tokyo

This week will be our last Team’s catch-up (I was a week ahead last week) so we shall meet on Tuesday at 10am. The following week you will meet with your new teacher…how exciting!

Below are the suggested activities for the week ahead. Have fun and remember to keep those pictures coming.

 

Starters

Lets start by warming up our brains with a sports theme…  Sports Day Word Search

Maths

This week we are going to do a Maths round-up to consolidate your learning.

First, we have some problem solving for you. The questions get trickier as you work down each page. Can you put on your Maths Detective hat and solve these problems?  Problem Solving Questions

Writing

Thank you for all those great Chapter Twos that you have been sending us this past week. Your characters really have got themselves into a bit of bother. We can’t wait to find out how you will get them out of trouble…if that is what you decide to do…

This week we are going to continue to write an extended story that will have three chapters and you are going to focus on writing chapter 3: the most exciting part of your story where our hearts should be pumping and we should be desperate to find out how your character is going to survive/what will happen to them in the end! You should continue to use your senses to describe what your character can see/hear/smell/feel to help guide your reader around your story.

Last week, your story ended with your character in real danger and we were unsure how they were going to get out of it. This week your story will begin with your character processing their options and describing their terror. In other words, chapter 3 will begin where chapter 2 left off.

Week 3/Chapter 3

  • Continue to think about your character and setting. Does your character change in any way throughout this chapter? (clothes becoming grubbier? Tear stained face? Heart pounding with anticipation or fear?)
  • Decide where your book is going to end. Just like in all the previous weeks, you need to know your ending before you begin… (this way you are more likely to get there!)
  • Hopefully, you have finished your front cover of your book. This week you will need to work on a Blurb and a Contents Page so as by the time you have finished writing your story, you have all the necessary bits to turn it into a book!

Once you have got all that straight in your head you are ready to start writing. Here are a few things to consider:

  • P1: What is the danger that your character is now in? Have they been backed on to the edge of a tall cliff by a monster/ghost? Is there a deadly prophecy that is about to come true on the stroke of midnight and there is no time to stop it? This paragraph needs to get your reader’s heart racing. You can do this by describing the fear that your character is feeling and telling the reader exactly what they can see.
  • P2: This should be where things seem hopeless for your character: there looks as if there is no way out of their situation and your character is at their lowest. What is going through their head? What are they going to miss about their lives now that they think it is over for sure? Think about how your character’s body would react to these thoughts: would your character be curled up in a ball, rocking back and forward, shivering and shaking?
  • P3: Your Character should come up with a plan and discover that things are perhaps not so hopeless and dark after all. Your character’s body language should change ever so slightly as they don’t want to give away too much to whatever the danger is that is threatening them. (A slight smile at the edge of their lips, staring at something useful around them for just a fraction of a second longer than normal…)
  • P4: The Ending! This is where it all comes together. Does your character’s plan work and they survive? Does it not work, and they are never seen again? Whatever your ending your need to make it very dramatic and full of description. Now more than ever it is important that you use your senses to allow your reader to feel that they are really experiencing the end (or not) with your character.
  • See
  • Feel
  • Hear
  • Smell

Please do not end your story by saying it was “Just a Dream.” You can do better than that. Try to leave your book on a cliff-hanger if you can so as your audience have to make up their own mind what happened and you don’t actually tell them out-right.

E.g. “Fred made one final effort to hang on; his fingertips were screaming in agony from the effort and his nails were clawing into the dirt in one last attempt to pull himself up. Without warning, a large fiery face appeared before him and began to smile. “Night, Night,” hissed a rasping voice full of evil. All Fred could manage was a silent scream as he watched the word above him disappear into the darkness.”

Reading

Continue to read your novel of choice and this week focus on SUMMARISING. It is a skill that we have practised a lot in our Higher Order Reading lessons. Try to summarize a chapter of your book in the style of a ‘tweet’. Remember that a tweet has a maximum of 280 characters (each letter, space and piece of punctuation is a character!)    Twitter Bird

 

Health and Well-being

For your physical health and well-being, we encourage you to have a go at Miss McNab’s challenges, a new one is posted every Wednesday on Twitter. We are doing well in the Tokyo Challenge so remember to log those activities!

Why not enter our Health Week Talent Show 2020! We are still having a talent show this year but with a difference. It will be in the form of a video that will be released on our very own school YouTube channel! You could dance, sing, play an instrument, do gymnastics, juggle, do bike tricks, tell jokes……

Other

This week we bring you the…Statue Challenge! Can you turn yourself into a living statue?

You can use famous statues or famous pieces of art for this challenge. Search for famous statues or artwork, then re-create the image, with yourself as the statue/person. Ideas could include top tourist attractions, self-portraits or even celebrities from Madam Tussauds. You can dress up, use props or just pull a simple pose. Give it a go and show us your best poses! Here are some pics from us to give you some inspiration.

Article 28 Every child has the right to an education.
Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child.
Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Introduction Thinking Question – Think of as many reasons as you can why education is important for children and young people
Possible Answers:

Task
