Educational psychologists and members of our team usually become involved after those who work directly with a child or young person have already gathered information and implemented a cycle of intervention and review.

As such, your child’s school or educational establishment will be the first port of call if you would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s learning or education.

Each school and educational establishment in Inverclyde is linked with an educational psychologist from our team, as the link to the educational psychology service. The educational psychologist will usually undertake three planning meetings each academic session with a member of staff from each establishment (usually a member of the senior management team), to plan ahead for each term and review.  This process of planning and review forms what we call a Practice Level Agreement (PLA), which is how we coordinate what we do in individual schools and establishments.  This includes any involvement for individual children and young people and for wider, systemic work we might be involved in too.

An educational psychologist’s contribution will often be agreed within a consultation process involving the ‘Team Around the Child’ (TAC).

Assessment information may be gathered through consultation with a teacher, early years practitioner, parent, carer or other professional, or through a teacher/practitioner using an agreed investigative framework.

The approaches used will depend on the context and the questions to be answered.
