Points to learn:

  • Qualitative data is also known as categorical or descriptive data. Some may refer to it as ‘not numerical’ however, this is not always the case. Some numerical data can act as a category i.e qualitative data such as an area phone code (01224) which is numerical but really acts as a description. Nominal data describes categories which have no order to them e.g eye colour, whereas ordinal data describes categories which can be ordered e.g clothes sizes small, medium, large etc.
  • Quantitative data is also referred to as numerical which can be either discrete or continuous. One way to distinguish between these is to consider discrete data as things you can count e.g number of brothers, whereas continuous data is measured e.g height.
