Children’s Rights Defenders at Manor Park

At Manor Park School we have been thinking about different adults in our lives, like our families, teachers and other adults that are part of our community.

We built defenders of children’s rights and thought about what special powers they might have, and what they might wear or eat.

Our defenders were characters like:

‘A fusion of Neil Armstrong, Robin Hood and a dragon. They would wear armour and a badge so that people know that they care about children and their rights.’

‘My defender is based on my Grandma because she’s nice to me and sorts things out. She’s wearing slippers so she’s comfy.’

‘They have orange sleeves and eat a healthy breakfast. They don’t have any super powers because they’re just a normal person.’

We think that adults should:

‘Love children and look after them.’

‘Ask you if you are okay?’

‘They should know what your favourite things are.’

We are all special

Human Dignity means everybody is important and special. At Manor Park School we have been thinking about all the things that make us each special.

Some of the things that make us special are:

‘I’m good at gymnastics, especially cartwheels.’

‘I’m good at playing with my brother and I can make a sound like a duck.’

‘I love writing and drawing.’

‘I’m special because I’m different from my sisters.’

We drew self portraits and thought about some things that that give us human dignity:

‘Parents can take children to the beach and pay attention to them.’

‘The things you like can make you different and special.’

‘Don’t hurt people.’

‘Keep children safe.’

What Kind of Aberdeen? Sport + Leisure

Last week the Imagineers held the second of their workshops ‘What Kind of Aberdeen?’ The workshop was held at Pittodrie Football Club and invited adults who work in areas of Sport and Leisure to learn about children’s rights.

In groups of adults and children we thought about the things children need to healthy, happy and safe. We talked about things that can get in the way, like not having a safe place to live or bullying.

Then we suggested things that adults can do, say and know that will help children. These are things like listening to children’s opinions, keeping the environment clean and not being afraid to ask questions and learn about children’s rights.

It was lots of fun meeting adults who work at Aberdeen Football Club as well as other adults who work with children and young people.

After the workshop we were taken on a tour of the stadium and beside the pitch and we all got photos and autographs with some of the players!

Ruby, Ryan, Robert and Rebecca

‘We are looking at how we learn. To help us think about how we learn we met four characters each with different learning styles. Ruby is resourceful, Ryan likes relationships. Robert is resilient and Rebecca is reflective.’

I am like Ryan. He is good at sharing and good at helping.

Nathan

I love challenges. My mums challenge to me was to get three greens (on my chart) and I did it and I’m off the chart! This makes me like Robert who is resilient.

Brandon

I’m very reflective. I like to plan something out before I do it. This is what Rebecca does.

Emily

I am like Ruby. She’s always asking questions and is really resourceful.

Chloe

I like to be with others it makes me feel safe. Ryan also like to be with others.

Learning about Myself

‘We have been looking at how we learn. In the center we drew a ‘selfie’ of ourselves. Around the sides we have written who helps us learn, what we have learned in our lives, what we like to do and what we would like to learn.’

People who help me learn include my mum, my stepdad, family, teachers, PSAs and my WWE coach.

Brandon

In maths I have learned my times tables and division, the alphabet, not to talk to strangers and to ride a bike.

William

I like to go on the bars in gymnastics, play my keyboard, play with my friends and do maths.

Yvie

I would like to learn how to ride a bike, how to climb a tree, become a teacher, to be a mum, learn how to go on a plane, become a famous youtuber and dye my hair blue!

Fortune Telling at Bramble Brae

This week at Bramble Brae we were exploring the concepts of healthy, happy, safe and human dignity. We did this by creating fortune tellers where we thought up questions to investigate these ideas.

Here are some of our thoughts on human dignity:

‘You have the right to do stuff’ Alexis

‘You feel special’ Nathan

‘Nobody hits you’ Charley

What does human dignity mean to you?

Imagining Manor Park – Part 2

We had a really good week painting and using all the colours to create the mural – it looks amazing! We hope that when people look at it and see the messages, ‘they might change their ways or behave differently.

Our recipe for a healthy, happy school is a place where there is lots of fruit, vegetables and water to drink. Children do lots of different things like skateboarding and swimming ‘to make us feel less lazy and more energised’.

We have been thinking about how we can stay mental healthy at school and drawing chill out and destress spaces that are inside and outside, like ‘an animal area because it would be relaxing at school’.

Under the rainbow of friendship – ‘We are drawing lots of people and nobody is fighting. No one is left out because people are sad when no one plays with them.’

Celebrating finishing painting the mural!

The mural is in our school for all the children and adults to see!

“I like the bit where someone says ‘I can’t get the answer’ and someone else says ‘I can help you’” – Manor Park School pupil

Imagining Manor Park – Part 1

We have been working hard this week beginning our mural. It will be made up of 6 panels which share ideas from all the pupils in the school. We have been designing, drawing and painting clocks which Imagine Manor Park in the future as the best school that it can be.

On our panel we are thinking about a happy classroom and using sunny colours. “The teacher asks you if you are okay and it is a good place to work.”

“We are the Comfort Team if someone was being bullied we would help them. If someone was sad we would tickle them or make a funny face!”

On our clock we are thinking about different ways of learning. “I would like all different people to teach us. Like my nan she grows peas, or someone to show us cooking.”

Tullos P4s Share

The children from P4 have been working hard this term investigating learning and what it is to be a learner as part of Doing Our Best. To celebrate all their efforts, they invited the P4/5s and their Headteacher Miss Leitch along to their classroom to share their ideas and what they have gained.

‘It made me understand learning in a different and awesome way.’

‘I liked the learnometers and human dignity the most.’

‘It made me feel more liked and happy.’

‘I learned to talk more and to be more confident.’

‘I learned what is like me as a learner and what is not like me.’
