Children from Riverbank Primary talked about adults:
The kinds of things adults should say to children are: “I love you”; “Well done”; “Go play outside”; “Don’t fight with your sister”; “Be good”. Adults should make children feel safe, loved, calm, happy and awesome.
Children from Riverbank Primary talked about how important families are: Our families love us and want to keep us safe.
‘Sometimes families need help too. Children can help their families. Aberdeen would be a better place for families if it was cleaner and there were more trees, flowers and parks.’ (Picture by Jack P5)
Riverside Primary is our 4th partner in the Imagining Aberdeen project. Children are also reflecting on what they love and want to change about life in their community.
‘The best thing about our community are our friends and having people who care about you. We love playing outside. The community flat helps people. We don’t like shouting and people who swear or bullies. People should have a good life.’

Children from Bramble Brae consider what is the best things about Aberdeen and also things that get in the way of them being healthy, happy and safe.
“The golf course is best because you can play golf, learn new skills and beat your friends. We like the Children’s hospital. When you are ill you can go there and get checked. They nurture you. The bad things are drunk people in children’s play parks and dog litter because people can stand on it and they don’t want a smelly shoe. Drunk people have to stop buying drinks, threatening kids and scaring them. Maybe like in the olden days, drunk people can be put in a public clink (head and arms poking through) and tomatoes thrown at them.”

Children have the right to live in a community that is healthy, happy and safe. Children from Bramble Brae investigated their community by going for a walk.
“The best thing about our community is activities at the Pink Centre like boxing and funs days. They are fun. The Pink Centre is cool because it has the park outside though we don’t like litter on the hill at the Pink Centre. We’d change busy roads like Granitehill Rd because the cars are going too fast. We’d add more traffic lights.”

“The library is very cool. We go there with our school. You can get everything you want on Byron Square as it has loads of shops. Though if we could change something we’d have less shops selling alcohol and beer. In our community the neighbours are really nice. They’re really friendly and helpful. It is easy to make friends. Everyone is generous.”

The pupils from Bramble Brae have created family portraits and have been discussing why a family is important and what they need.
“A family is important because they are there for you no matter what. A family needs strength. This means they need to believe in each other and be encouraged but also to be able to pick things up. Divorces get in the way because your family is split and you don’t get to see everyone.”

‘The best things about Aberdeen are the buildings – very awesome. The look of them is great. The parks too – you can spend time with your family at them. Duthie, Hazelhead and Seaton are the best because they have swings, diggers and big slides.’

‘The worst things about Aberdeen is the pollution because animals can die and drunk people in the street because they shout and threaten us, which is scary. They hurt police officers by ‘kicking off’. The best thing is having our friends here.’

‘Family is important because they wash your clothes so you are clean and don’t smell and because they look after you by giving you shelter, a warm bed and playing with you.’

‘A family needs transport, so you can travel on holiday. A family needs a TV because we sit together and watch it. We are also together when we go out places or to the cinema and when play Just Dance.’

Children have been doing a lot of thinking and talking about adults and what characteristics an adult needs to have. They made posters and wrote letters. Here are some examples:
‘Dear adults: Do everything you can to make us happy. Please keep children safe. Let children play. Children must have a home.’
‘Dear adults: Please respect us children. Please do everything you can to look after us! Don’t do anything nasty to us kids.’
‘Dear adults: We are writing to you to make you a better adult. You should look after your family. Do not fight.’
‘Dear adults: You should be less mood and less hard-working. Let us do things for ourselves, except cooking. Never be mean.’
Children from Riverbank Primary have been thinking about school life.
‘Today we were talking about school – what we like in school and what we do in school. The most important things to be healthy, happy and safe are having friends, playing and playtime, doing maths, having PSAs and teachers.’
