Society and lifestyles – focus on disability

In this week’s lecture and seminars we worked on how people that have a disability maybe affected by their surroundings and environments. We discussed what can be done to include everyone in all aspects of society. During the seminar we looked at specific scenarios and discussed with our peers if they showed discriminatory practice, once […]

In this week’s input we began the next section of our Society and Lifestyles module: Inclusion, Diversity & Human Rights. With looking into detail about how important inclusion and equality is in society, we discussed the factors that give rise to inequality and discrimination and how they operate at a personal, cultural and structural level. This is also known as PCS analysis. I have found this area of the module very interesting so far because I believe supporting diversity is a crucial issue and without promoting inclusion will ultimately lead to oppression and increase intolerance within our society. One key concept of the lesson that I found very stimulating was Allport’s scale of Prejudice and Discrimination (1954), particularly his explanation of Antilocution. He suggests that making insensitive jokes and remarks about another group is still a major form of discrimination and can create exclusion to minority groups. I think this is especially important when educating young children that even what may seem ‘insignificant’ comments can initiate bigotry and essentially victimise a certain group of people, eg women and black people. Also I understand the importance of this area of learning is whilst politics and discrimination against minorities are very controversial topics of discussion at this moment in 2017. I look forward learning further about inclusion and equality.

Society and Lifestyles Reflection – 23rd January

In this input I learned a lot about ‘ Unchurched Spirituality’ and the variations of this. We looked at heavens gate and how this was a cult set up in 1997 where its founder set it up as a Religious worship outwith the church but the way the statements were interpreted this led to a tragic event where many people committed mass suicide.  I also learned how there can be ‘Unchurched spirituality’ which may be where the participants in the organisation worship and follow the Religion but do not do this within the church or in the traditional Church settings.  We also looked at the statements given by theorists such as Karl Marx and their opinions on ‘Unchurched Spirituality’ and also the criticisms of this. I feel this was very interesting and I feel I understood the basics of the input and this subject, however, there was a lot of information and I feel I will need to study up on this and find some books to read up on this a bit more in order to cement my understanding of this information and ensure I know how to fit this into my exam questions in order to get the best mark. I am struggling to comprehend the theorists and how they actually fit into a certain question and what to look out for in the question in order to know that this question links with a certain theorist and their statements. In order to address this I will ensure to read over the theorists and read over past papers to ensure I can start to link questions to the information I have learned. I will also further research the theorists in order to ensure I have extra information about the theorists and what they said about Religion and Culture. Overall, the classes were interesting and also challenging which meant that I can go away and further study this for the exam.

From the input I have learned about Religion and the basics of religion, I enjoyed looking at the different symbols of religion and about different Religions I had not seen or heard of before such as cults which were created and some of which had tragic consequences, this was very interesting to find out about. I also learned about Religion from the ‘inside’ as the believers approach and from the ‘outside’ as an aspect from the scholarly approach. I also learned about theorists who stated philosophical statements about Religion. I feel I understood part of the input today but felt the time in the independent study task allowed me more time to look into these theorists and find out more information which may link and help with my answers to exam type questions. I was struggling to comprehend how I would fit the theorists in with the answering to exam questions and how to pick out important words from the question to ensure I have the correct answer for this. In order to ensure I can overcome this obstacle I have looked further into past papers and exam type answers to ensure I can see how these would be linked together.  Overall, after the input I feel I have enjoyed learning more about Religion and how it fits in with society today, however, I feel that I have a lot of work to do in order to ensure I am ready for the exam as it was a lot of new information to take in and fully understand in order to write about this.

Inclusion and Equality

I found today’s lecture on inclusion and equality really interesting, as I was learning about the differences between them. It was fascinating to see that they had two different meanings as equality is about the fairness of things and inclusion is making sure that everyone is involved.

I got the opportunity to look deeper into Peggy McIntosh – a woman who studied and wrote a paper regarding “white privilege”. Peggy McIntosh studied privilege, especially “White Privilege and Male Privilege”. She described her understanding of ‘White Privilege” in her book “White privilege and male privilege: a personal account of coming to see correspondences through work in women’s studies”. Also “unacknowledged male privilege” – where white men receive unearned advantages because they are white males. She listed resources that she has in her ‘invisible backpack’ which gave her an advantage over other people who do not have them. I then looked further into her privileges she lists that she was entitled to as white woman. This was interesting to look at as I could look at some of these privileges and could relate to them myself.

I also found it interesting to learn about Allport’s scale of prejudice and discrimination as I could look at the scale and relate it to situations which happened in history and in today’s society. We were also looking at the PCS analysis (personal/psychological level, cultural level, structural level) which gives us a deeper understanding into how people operate at different levels in society. This PCS analysis is an area of today I think I can develop as I don’t fully grasp the concept yet. However, with further reading, I believe that I will develop this concept and hopefully use it in the exam as it seems interesting.

Equality and inclusion are key principles which I will need to adhere to as a future primary teacher. I will need to make sure that my classroom is one which supports all the needs of learners no matter of their sex, race or disability. Equality and inclusion are the foundations for the Scottish governments principle of GIRFEC – “getting it right for every child”. Every child deserves the same opportunities and access to support no matter what. Every child should feel included in a classroom and as a future teacher I will aspire to make every child feel important in my classroom and adapt my learning styles to what the children require at their own pace and level. This will mean that it is fair for every child in my class and hopefully allow all of them to feel included.
