Primary Engineer

The Primary Engineer competition encourages UK primary and secondary learners  to find engineered solutions to real world problems.  Learners interview engineering professionals, identify a problem, design a solutions and ‘find the engineer they could be’. Register here.

Primary Engineer have created a brand-new high impact, fully funded sixteen hour short course. The eight-week programme is aimed at anyone within education who supports the delivery of STEM related learning in the classroom. It will support in developing an evidence-based approach to STEM education delivery and strategy development. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with engineers in industry – understanding their roles and how their skill sets can support them in the classroom to meet the current needs of students, preparing them for the world of work.

Scottish Learning Festival   21-22 September

The Scottish Learning Festival is free to attend and everyone with an interest in education is welcome to register.  This year the programme has around 65 seminars including spotlight sessions offering a fantastic line up of speakers, debates and opportunities for professional learning and networking.

Our programme will once again be held in an amazing 3D virtual venue and you will be able to view the sessions anywhere from any device that has internet access.
You will need to register to access the virtual venue, but you don’t need to pre-register for sessions, all you need to do is explore the programme, decide what you’d like to attend and just join any session of your choice on the day.

Coupar Angus Primary School in Perth and Kinross aim to share their journey to ‘Make Maths Count’ in their school. Maker Space and STEAM – Taking Design Thinking into School

Allans Primary and Stirling High School are developing a progressive curriculum with curiosity, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication and compassion at the centre. Responding to changing societal and workplace needs, and inspired by design thinking – a method of problem solving using a range of skills, processes and mindsets – they hope to nurture pupils’ agency, skills and values enabling them to contribute positively to their communities and wider society now and in the future.
Hear how each school has developed learner led, creative learning through Maker Space and STEAM and how they hope to develop this further together.

23 teams of young people from around Scotland and one team from Norway met at the FIRST^® LEGO^® League Challenge Scottish Final. The STEM Troopers from McLaren High School were crowned the Scottish Champions & went on to compete at the International Finals in Brazil where they were awarded 3^rd place in Robot Design.

The new SUPERPOWERED season launched on 2 August. Teams will explore how energy is created, stored, distributed and consumed.  Registrations for all the three divisions are now OPEN.

Tournaments will run from December 2022 – March 2023 to compete for places at the Great Britain final to be held in Harrogate on 22 April 2023.

First round of Funding applications for the FIRST^® LEGO^® League Superpowered season (Challenge, Explore and Discover) is now open to educational organisations, home school groups or youth groups.  Closing date for applications is 11 September 22.

Work by Education Scotland is underway with several local authorities to explore opportunities to align initiatives with growth deals and city deals with a focus on net zero and the CESAP.

SSERC announced that 84 Nuffield funded research placements are now confirmed for S5 pupils. The opportunity for future placements in colleges was discussed with placements needing to be confirmed by September 2022.

Institute of Physics (IoP) are continuing to work with the Limit Less campaign to promote better equity and inclusion in physics and ensure good quality professional learning in schools.

ESP has been working with partners to produce series of short video presentations with the aim to highlight and promote various careers in STEM.  Below are compilations of short video presentations focusing on each sector.

All Systems Flow for Women Into STEM – as part of International Women Into Engineering Day this year, West College Scotland in partnership with Forth Valley College and Equate Scotland have launched the next phase of activity in their Women into STEM Project and will run until 31 March 23.

North East School Pupils Shine in SuSTEMability Final – The SuSTEMability programme, now in its second year is spearheaded by North East Scotland College and sponsored by OPITO.  Primary school pupils from across the North East have showcased their talents in a regional challenge designed to inspire the next generation to find solutions to environmental challenges.

Scholarship Awards Energise Levenmouth Academy Pupils – Five Levenmouth Academy pupils have been given a boost to their future careers after being awarded scholarships by Shell UK.  The pupils, currently on the Shell UK Girls into Energy course at Fife College’s Levenmouth Campus, received the scholarship awards for their hard work and commitment to their studies.

STEM Stars Shine in NESCOL Skills Challenge – the popular event, sponsored by Shell UK, brings teams together from schools across the region to take part in eight STEM challenges in the final round.  The winners have been crowned in NESCOL’s annual STEM skills competition for S2 pupils.

Young learners design Environmentally Efficient Vehicles for a Sustainable Future – The Dundee Science Centre has collaborated with the Dundee Museum of Transport to inspire young learners to explore the future of sustainable transportation.

Inverness School Win 2022 Global Underwater Hub Challenge – organised by the Global Underwater Hub and supported by the Smallpeice Trust, the final of the 2022 GUH STEM Challenge was held in Aberdeen on 15 & 16 June. Pupils from six schools across the UK travelled to the Granite City to compete in the final of the nationwide competition and Culloden Academy was named winners of the 2022 GUH STEM Challenge.

Scottish Schools Wow Judges at STEM Project National Final – The Scottish National Final of the Industrial Cadets Bronze Project was held at Dynamic Earth on Tuesday 31st May. Pupils from across Scotland celebrated the completion of a 12-weeks long STEM competition.

SSE Renewables announced as STEM Partner of Hydro Ness – SSE Renewables has been announced as the official STEM partner of the Hydro Ness visitor attraction and hydro scheme in Inverness.

The Data Lab Newsletter – The Data Lab latest newsletter is now available to view with lots of events coming up.

Tour of Britain 2022 brings new Online Resource to Aberdeenshire Schools – Tour of Britain will arrive in the North East of Scotland in September 22.  Aberdeenshire schools have been given access to a set of new online resources dedicated to cycling with specific focus on STEM subjects.  These online resources are being hosted on the GLOW platform.

YESC Regional Celebration of STEM – 90 young people from both primary and secondary schools across Dundee, Fife, Angus and Perth & Kinross gathered at Dundee Science Centre to take part in SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs (YESC) Regional Celebration of STEM in partnership with SHELL U.K. Limited.

NEON’s STEM Curriculum Activities – Neon is bringing the STEM curriculum to life through real-world engineering.  Lots of STEM activities for both primary and secondary students.

Enginuity Skills Miner – Enginuity have harnessed Minecraft’s popularity to bring engineering to life in a fun and innovative way through gameplay and exploration.  Designed for use in the classroom and completely free-of-charge.

The Big Bang Challenge – Inspired by The Big Bang Fair, The Big Bang Challenge invites young people’s creative ideas for creating a greener future.  All students who enter will receive a downloadable certificate to print at home or in school.  Entries will close on Monday 12 September 22.

Faraday Challenge Days – Applications are now open for the 22 / 23 season of the IET Faraday Challenge.  A cross curricular STEM activity designed for students aged 12 to13.

UK CanSat Competition – Registrations for the 22/23 are now open.  The CanSat competition provides students with the opportunity to have practical experience working on a small-scale space project.  Open to teams from any school or college in the UK and members must be over the age of 14 at the time of the competition.

2022 Australian Virtual Astronaut (AVA) Challenge – Complete a 9-week STEM design sprint based on challenges facing NASA’s Artemis and the Australian space industry.  The challenge begins Monday 29 August, and the submission date is Friday 11 November.  The challenge is open to non-Australian students.

Education Scotland is delighted to announce that the STEM Nation Award programme is being rolled-out nationally across all sectors in the 2022/23 academic session.

In August, Ian Stewart joined the Education Scotland STEM Team on an eight month secondment to support the national roll-out of the programme. He joins the team from his substantive post as Chemistry teacher at Beeslack Community High School, Midlothian and was heavily involved with all the strands of the National eLearning Offer for Chemistry. Ian’s new remit will focus on the national roll-out of the STEM Nation Award where he will support regional colleagues, practitioners and education leaders with the promotion and facilitation of the award in addition to providing professional learning support for practitioners.

Ian says “I am very pleased to join the STEM Team on this exciting project. I am looking forward to supporting colleagues and settings across Scotland.”

All early learning and childcare settings, primary schools, secondary schools and CLD providers can apply for the STEM Nation Award.  

The award provides a focus for colleagues across the setting to work collegiately to identify excellent STEM learning which is having a positive impact on STEM across the five elements within their setting addressing areas from the STEM Education and Training Strategy for Scotland.  

By engaging in the STEM self-evaluation and improvement framework, practitioners can reflect on and develop practice within STEM, including closing equity gaps in participation and attainment in STEM. Through connecting with other settings or partners, practitioners can enhance the practice within their setting and inspire children, young people and adults. 

The national rollout will be supported by a series of webinars and ongoing professional learning opportunities. 

Settings are encouraged to register for the award and access the supporting resources on the online resource. 

Young learners in Dundee are benefitting from exciting opportunities to develop their STEM skills thanks to a new partnership.

STEMovation connects Dundee Science Centre and Dundee & Angus College with local primary schools including Craigowl, Barnhill, St Mary’s and Forthill. More than 150 children are currently participating in monthly projects which are on public display.

The initiative has been developed and managed by one of Dundee’s Primary Science Development Officers (PSDOs) Sarah Hynie Klemen as part of the Raising Aspirations in Science Education (RAiSE) programme. It began in January and will continue in the next academic year engaging additional schools and pupils. Sarah said:

“Children love to be able to share their ideas, work, and efforts, taking their learning out of the classroom and meeting new people. This project is a great example of partners working together to really bring STEM to life. It has been a great success and it’s been wonderful to see the pride and excitement from the children and teachers.”

College students studying Applied Science are creating monthly challenges for the pupils, as part of their unit focussed on achieving the Young STEM Leader qualification. These have included topics such as chemical reactions in sweets, vertical farming, and bug hotels.

The children’s work is displayed at the Dundee Science Centre each month.

Andrei Hapca and Lara Anderson are pupils at St Mary’s Primary School. They said:

“We enjoyed the project because it was fun and didn’t feel like school even though we were learning a lot! The project tested our creativeness and our scientific brains.”

Primary 7 pupils at Craigowl Primary School shared:

“I‘d heard of STEM but didn’t know what it meant. Now I know and I think I’d like a job that does STEM.”

“I thought the challenges would be hard but they were fun.”

“I have learned about jobs when we have done STEM challenges. I would like to be an architect or a civil engineer.”

Tristin Mullins is one of the students at Dundee and Angus College who has been involved in the project. He said:

“Personally, I have enjoyed developing activities for primary schools that are eco-friendly and promote the usage of recyclable and easily accessible materials. I feel that because we have presented activities that can be done by anyone regardless of access level, we’ve helped to remove barriers which some children may have previously encountered when engaging in STEM activities. Promoting excitement in children to pursue STEM subjects and showing them that STEM can be applied to anything, including adventures in their own backyard, has been a rewarding experience for me. I hope that the children who engaged with our activities had fun and feel like they could repeat those activities at their own home if they wanted to do them again.”

Dr Lorna McIvor, Science Lecturer at Dundee & Angus College, added:

“From my perspective I think the students have got a great deal out of being part of STEMovation.  They have enjoyed coming up with the ideas and planning them, building their organisational and teamworking skills. Working up the projects from concept through to delivery of the finalised challenges has tested their communication and leadership skills, making sure the challenges were clear, understandable and that they all had a role to play in the development of the activities.

“They loved seeing the photographs of the challenges and used what they learned from seeing the outcomes of the challenges to improve how they built the next one.  During the process they have learned about inequalities in STEM and the value of building science capital, trying hard to make the challenges sent out the schools as inclusive as possible. I am incredibly proud of the way they have embraced this opportunity to be involved and help others develop an interest in STEM whilst also developing their own skills as young leaders.

“I’ve loved the experience and really enjoyed seeing the students grow in confidence with each event they planned and really question their own bias and misconceptions about STEM.”

RAiSE is a programme of The Wood Foundation, Scottish Government, Education Scotland, and participating local authorities which empowers primary practitioners with the skills, confidence, and networks to develop and deliver exciting and motivating STEM learning experiences.

STEM Strategy Learner, Parent and Carer Surveys

Education Scotland is working with consultants Ekosgen to understand better the factors influencing learners’ choices regarding STEM learning and pathways. This next phase will involve gathering views directly from learners (P6 to S6) and parents/carers.

We would greatly appreciate any support you can give in encouraging and supporting learners to complete these surveys. We also are keen to hear the views of parents.

The surveys are available online until 01 July 2022 and should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. They ask a range of questions to gauge views and perceptions about STEM subjects, pathways and jobs. Introduction to gender balance & equalities & STEM

Strategies for addressing gender stereotypes and unconscious bias including the impact on participation in STEM and learner pathways.

For newly qualified teachers and ELC practitioners from across Tayside region, this webinar explores the impact of gender inequality, gender stereotypes and unconscious bias on children and young people. The session will also highlight strategies and practical approaches including examples of good practice.

National awareness raising session ‘How does gender inequality affect attainment, wellbeing and participation?’

Relevant to all settings, this introductory session will explore the impact of gender inequality, gender stereotypes and unconscious bias on children and young people, with particular focus on attainment, participation and wellbeing.

Royal Institution schools grant scheme – now open

The Royal Institution’s 2022 grant scheme is now open; application guidance is available online.

Applications are open for free full day school visits from one of the Royal Institution’s professional presenters.  The day includes curriculum-linked science shows for students, a practical science CPD session for teachers and an after-school community show for parents, carers and siblings.

All UK state maintained primary, secondary and ASN schools and alternative education providers are eligible to apply for a fully funded Science in Schools package worth £800.  Application guidance is now available here . Closing date 31 May.

TechFest 2022

TechFest is back in person and the Activity Weekend will be held at Robert Gordon University Campus on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May.
