D&G Creativity Framework

Dumfries and Galloway’s Curriculum Support team have produced a framework document which shows how creativity is a cross-cutting theme of Curriculum for Excellence.

The document helpfully identifies the characteristics of learning environments that encourage creativity.

Shape the Future competition – improving the lives of women and girls worldwide

School should be aware of the upcoming second Shape the Future competition which will be launched on the 28 April 2014 across the UK. The competition will be open to all UK schools and will ask young people (aged 11-16) to outline and present on their priorities for improving the lives of women and girls worldwide. Following a judging panel, the winning pupils will be invited to attend and present their ideas at a global summit hosted by the Prime Minister in July.

The themes of this short group project fit into subjects across the curriculum, including Modern Studies, RME, Geography, History, English and PSE as well as lending itself to a context for inter-disciplinary learning.  A dedicated ‘Shape the Future’ website will provide teachers with a range of resources to guide pupils through the competition.

Education Scotland has provided a Learning Journey considering aspects of gender equality which will be a helpful resource to schools.  Last year Promoting  Diversity and Equality: Developing Responsible Citizens in 20th century brought to the fore exemplars of good practice and resources to assist in taking forward approaches to diversity and equality.

On 7 May Game On Scotland and Education Scotland  have organised a conference for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games: Promoting Equality and Diversity it will reflect on the three core values of the Commonwealth Games Federation, humanity, equality and destiny.  The conference will provide delegates with a speakers and workshops focused on values education in a global context as well as the inclusion of all.

Join Theresa Breslin and Elly Goodman of the Citizens Theatre as they offer a unique insight into the history of bringing this iconic book to the stage. Pupils and teachers will get the chance to ask Theresa and Elly questions about the play and the book and to find out more about this ground-breaking project. The Citizens Theatre has now staged three large scale musical theatre productions of Theresa Breslin’s Divided City, adapted for the stage by Martin Travers with an original score and songs by Claire McKenzie. Young people today are confronted with a tough, complex and deeply
challenging environment in which to grow up. Some thrive on it, some
find coping strategies, others are destroyed by it. What we know is that
those young people who manage most effectively in this environment have
the capacity to understand where they are coming from and to imagine
different futures. In this conversation, we will explore the role that
culture and creativity plays in developing this form of resilience. We
will look at the combination of skills that underpins resilience, and
the places where these can be learnt. Most of all we see whether the
creative and cultural programmes can make a significant difference to
the outcomes of young people here.

Join us for this exciting behind the scenes look at puppetery as teachers work with Finn Caldwell who is one of the original War Horse puppeteers. Finn has directed the puppetry for productions of War Horse in the West End and in Australia.  He has also just directed the puppetry in The Light Princess at the National Theatre and is directing a children’s puppetry show called Elephantom in The Shed.

Edinburgh Creative Conversation Christmas Celebration

Edinburgh’s Creative Conversation Christmas Celebration is on Wednesday 11th December 2013.This one has a slightly different focus and our Creative Catalysts are people who have been inspired by Creative Conversations to take action. Different ways of working, challenges to the norm, surprises, being outside the comfort zone and inspiring stories of deep pupil engagement can all be expected.

The Creative Conversation is titled ‘What Difference Does it Make?’ and that is exactly what you are invited to discuss with colleagues.

I would also like to thank all of you for coming to Creative Conversations and hope you can join Gillian Tee, David Cameron, Lucy Vaughan, Heather Lucchesi Eileen Littlewood and Lindsay Fullarton in what I am sure will be a very enjoyable conversation about Creativity across Learning.

Coffee is from 4pm and the Creative Conversation will begin at 4.30. Wine and seasonal nibbles will follow at around 6pm till 7ish.

Inspired by my Museum, International Writing Competition

An encounter with a museum can be a life-changing experience, a realisation of the past or an inspiration for the future. If you have a poem, short story or reportage inspired by a museum you have visited, tell us and your words could be selected for publication.

New report on Assessing Creativity across many subjects available on Creativity Portal

Led by the University of Dundee and funded by Creative Scotland, this project gathered the views of three groups of professionals working within the expressive arts with the aim of identifying effective and innovative models of assessment of creativity. These models were documented and used to develop case studies in the format of a teaching resource for application across the whole curriculum. The resource was piloted and evaluated by the research and development team in collaboration with teachers and initial teacher education (ITE) providers.

The project develops the links between arts organisations, schools and ITE providers through data collection; shared analysis and evaluation; and through the development, application and dissemination of findings. In this way stronger partnerships have been established as recommended in Teaching  Scotland’s  Future  (Donaldson  2010)

120 Words for Perth and Kinross

2014 is set to be a fantastic year in Perth & Kinross and across Scotland. With the Year of Homecoming, the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup, 2014 will be full of amazing events, activities opportunities and memories. With our website, 120 words, we want to capture a record of 2014 in Perth & Kinross whether you live, work or visit the area.

120 Words 1200 people 12 months We’d like you to get creative and describe what you’ve done, what you’re doing or what you want to do in 120 words, upload it to our website and share it. You can even add a wee photo too! Our website will launch at the end of November 2013 and we’d like as many contributions as we can get. You can submit as many times as you want (in 120 words!) over the year and to help inspire you we’ve created 12 themes for you to write about.

You can upload your contribution to www.our120words.org.uk at the end of November or please fill in the submission form email it to us and we’ll upload it for you. Over the next 12 months we’ll build a picture of 2014, keep checking back to see what’s been posted and what people have been up to.
