Imaginate Commissions for 2015 – Deadline 25 April

Imaginate is seeking proposals for two new productions to be presented in schools in 2015. This opportunity is open to individual artists/producers; arts organisations (including venues) and partnerships. The closing date for submissions is Friday 25 April 2014.

The commissioned pieces should be created specifically for school children in one of the following age ranges;

P1 to P4

P5 to P7

The initial tour will cover two weeks in schools prior to the Imaginate Festival 2015, followed by a week of performances at Festival.  The dates for the Imaginate Festival next year are 11 to 18 May 2015.

Update on the Creative Scotland website

On Friday 4 April, Creative Scotland will begin the switch-over from its existing website to its new site. Users of the site may experience some disruption over that weekend as part of this switchover but it is intended that the new site will be operational from Monday 7 April.

The new site is designed to be easier to use with clearer layout, structure and access to information. Over the coming weeks, the site will evolve to feature Creative Scotland’s new Plan, new funding programmes and showcase key projects.

The site will also feature case studies of the range and breadth of work that Creative Scotland supports and organisations and individuals from across the arts, screen and creative industries will be invited to submit content in order to showcase their work to a national and international audience. This has already been piloted and the new site will feature a range of user-generated content when it goes live, but Creative Scotland is keen to expand this content as much as possible.

As you might expect with a new site, many elements are still in development and the site will continue to improve and expand over the coming months.

Paul Gorman asks what is an artist if not a pioneer? To pioneer means to stray from the path, to uncover, to re-imagine. It requires a boldness and confidence. The path has been made by others – perhaps straying from it is our only option?

What do we mean by ‘Professionalism’? Presentations, conversation and Q & A
The work of artists in participatory settings often isn’t taken seriously, or regarded as ‘proper’ work’. What would it take for the practice to be regarded as truly professional? How can you show the work you do is of the highest standard? With Stephanie Knight, Kathryn Deane & Paul Gorman.

3 Pecha Kucha sessions highlight work by 16 artists and organisations from across Scotland.

Inspired? Get Writing! Creative Writing Competition 2013/2014

Enjoy writing but need that little bit of inspiration and a goal to get started?

Why not enter this year’s National Galleries Inspired? Get writing! competition? You can write in prose or poetry about anything that has inspired you from our permanent collection: drawings; paintings; prints; sculpture; photography; installation. There are five categories for school pupils and adults. Four volumes of Inspired? Get writing! have been published, featuring winners from previous years, so you can check out the standard. For full details download the rules. There is also a resource pack which you might find helpful.

There are 5 categories:

•           Under 12 years

•           12 – 14 years

•           15-18 years

•           Adults prose

•           Adults poetry

Entries should be submitted by Friday 17 January 2014.  Results of the competition will be announced by Thursday 17 April 2014.

‘Placements in Practice’ seminar

ArtWorks Scotland is pleased to invite you to ‘Placements in Practice’, a day focusing on student artists learning in a range of social contexts.

Join us in exploring good practice in student placements, and the role this experience can play in preparing artists to work in participatory settings.

The event is aimed at both Higher and Further Education institutions, and cultural organisations, and will create a space to:

·  share learning from live projects

·  have a critical cross-institutional and organizational dialogue

·  discuss the ‘recipe’ for good practice – with a view to developing guidance.

The morning will include contributions from The Sage Gateshead, Motherwell College, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, who will share their experiences of projects that have taken place in prisons, health settings, schools, and wider communities. The afternoon will focus on good practice and guidance.

Lunch will be provided.

The event is free, but places are limited, so please book early.

Enhancing Learning and Teaching: So how can this be achieved using QR codes?

QR codes are now becoming commonplace and most smartphone users are familiar with using them to interactively access information, web pages, multimedia resources etc. They offer scope to introduce interactivity in to the curriculum using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets whilst widening the range of information and resources which can be integrated into the learning process. Used appropriately they can offer benefits such as increased engagement, self-directed learning, wider and deeper learning.

This webinar will focus on the ways in which QR codes can be created and used without the requirement for any technical skills and introduce examples of specific applications which can be used to enhance learning and teaching.

The webinar will be led by David Dyet, ICT Systems Manager, Reid Kerr College.

SLF 2013: Raising the bar in Scotland – Transforming lives through learning

SLF 2013 will be held on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th September 2013 in the SECC, Glasgow.
The theme for SLF 2013 is Raising the bar in Scotland – transforming lives through learning.

The Scottish Learning Festival 2013 will support practitioners explore a wide range of practical approaches, resources and research aimed at improving achievement and attainment for all our learners in Scotland. While raising the bar in Scotland will impact on all our learners, it is likely to have particular impact on the learning outcomes and life chances of “those who experience social disadvantage in Scotland, which studies show appears to be a larger factor in attainment than in similar countries.” OECD 2009
Call for Participation Now Open

The Call for Participation is now open and full details of the theme along with an online submission form are available on the SLF website.

Are you aware of establishments that demonstrate good practice or maybe there is a project that you have been working on that could be showcased.  We would encourage you to share this information with your colleagues and networks and submit proposals for consideration.

There is a robust review, evaluation and scoring system in place to help ensure all submissions are treated equally and therefore it is essential that all requests to participate go through the submission process and adhere to the timescales provided.  To ensure that your area of work is represented in the conference programme, please complete and submit the Call for Participation form for consideration.
Last year we received in excess of 350 submissions which allowed Education Scotland to deliver a relevant and balanced conference programme covering all key areas of education.  The 2013 programme will be launched in May and will feature the sessions that have been submitted and selected by the review panel.

The deadline for submitting proposals is Friday 1st March, proposals received after this date cannot be considered for inclusion in the conference programme.

We look forward to receiving your proposals and hope you will contribute to SLF 2013 to help continue to deliver Scotland’s largest annual national education conference and exhibition.
