Human Rights Day 2013

Human Rights Day LogoToday is international Human Rights Day, celebrated across the globe on 10 December every year. Sixty-five years ago on this date, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proclaiming its principles as the “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.”

The day has been marked by commemorative events across the globe and by the publication of a range of documents, including Scotland’s National Action Plan for Human Rights (SNAP), aimed at improving human rights protection in Scotland, and Glasgow 2014’s own plan for how it will approach human rights. Seventy nations and territories, representing one third of the world’s population – half of them under the age of 25 – will take part in the Games and the diversity of circumstances can make for an excellent link to discussion of human rights issues.

During the month of December, Game On Scotland is focusing on the Religious and Moral Education (RME) curricular area and the discussion of human rights can be an important part of this. On the Game On Scotland site, you’ll even find a learning journey designed to help explore human rights in the context of the Games. In addition, the next Glow meet for learners, part of our regular series, will take place on 17th December at 11am, again with an RME theme – sign up to take part here.

The Commonwealth Class – Education Pack

The Commonwealth Class education pack is a flexible resource that can be used to support individual projects or joint curriculum work with a partner school.

For more information about opportunities and resources around the Commonwealth Class programme visit  British Council Schools Online.

If you do not yet have a British Council Schools Online account we recommend that you register with them to gain access to other opportunities to develop the global dimension at your school including Connecting Classrooms, International School Award and Language Assistants.

The next BBC online debate will be held on Thursday 14 November to coincide with the Commonwealth Youth Forum 2013. The debate is a fantastic opportunity for your students to engage with their peers around the globe on the most vital challenges and opportunities facing young people today. You can contribute to the debate on the day by emailing comments to the BBC team at commonwealthclass@bbc.co.uk.

And finally, British Council are offering grants of £250 for schools to hold mini launch events on their site for other schools in their area. Events do not have to take any predetermined format but should be 2 hours long and schools should involve at least 10 teachers representing different schools in their area. The launch should be based on the script provided in the Commonwealth Class Education Pack. If you would like to hold a launch event please download and complete the Commonwealth_Class_Launch_Grant_Application  and return to ryan.dunn@britishcouncil.org.

Group tickets now available

5th Nov - Tickets go on public sale

Demand for tickets for next year’s Commonwealth Games has been phenomenal, with 92% of tickets sold through the initial application phase. From 10am this morning (5 Nov), the remaining 8% of tickets went on sale to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis. Approximately 76,000 tickets remain, in six sports – Badminton, Boxing, Lawn Bowls, Rugby Sevens, Squash and Weightlifting (as well as Para-Sport Powerlifting); more than half of these tickets are priced in the cheapest category (£15), which means that under 16s pay just £7.50. There are also a limited number of tickets available for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, in the more expensive categories.

From an education perspective, one of the best things about this phase of ticket sales is the addition of a group sales process, allowing Local Authorities, Sports Groups, Schools and Organisations to purchase in larger numbers. If you’re looking to organise an educational outing to the Games then you can now get a whole class or group’s worth of tickets in one go (to a maximum of 50, and inclusive of an appropriate number of chaperones). Group sales can only be made by contacting the Glasgow 2014 ticketing hotline on 0844 249 2014 and are for recognised groups only.

For more information on ticketing, visit the Glasgow 2014 ticketing website tickets.glasgow2014.com.
