Human Rights Day 2013

Human Rights Day LogoToday is international Human Rights Day, celebrated across the globe on 10 December every year. Sixty-five years ago on this date, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proclaiming its principles as the “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.”

The day has been marked by commemorative events across the globe and by the publication of a range of documents, including Scotland’s National Action Plan for Human Rights (SNAP), aimed at improving human rights protection in Scotland, and Glasgow 2014’s own plan for how it will approach human rights. Seventy nations and territories, representing one third of the world’s population – half of them under the age of 25 – will take part in the Games and the diversity of circumstances can make for an excellent link to discussion of human rights issues.

During the month of December, Game On Scotland is focusing on the Religious and Moral Education (RME) curricular area and the discussion of human rights can be an important part of this. On the Game On Scotland site, you’ll even find a learning journey designed to help explore human rights in the context of the Games. In addition, the next Glow meet for learners, part of our regular series, will take place on 17th December at 11am, again with an RME theme – sign up to take part here.

Congratulations!

The Game on Scotland team wishes to congratulate Louise Johnston from Torphichen Primary School, Bathgate, West Lothian who won the signed Libby Clegg poster donated by Team Scotland. Louise’s name was randomly selected from those 110 people who signed up to Game on Scotland in November.

There are many more opportunities to win through Game On Scotland from Art Competitions to visits from Athletes and Clyde .  If you want to be kept in the loop about what’s on offer why not become part of the Game On Scotland family by signing up to our regular e-updates.

New projects: Xtrayard and Get Scotland Dancing

Game On Scotland is delighted to announce that we have just added two more projects to the Other educational projects section of the site. From the outset we’ve been keen to create a one-stop-shop for teachers and educators interested in learning using the Games, and the curation of other projects is an important part of this process.

XtrayardXtrayard is an online platform that encourages young people to take part in physical activity and track it on a virtual route. To celebrate the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games they’ve re-created the Queen’s Baton Relay route, which will allow your learners to journey around the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth by taking part in physical activity and eating healthily.

Get Scotland DancingGet Scotland Dancing is a celebration of dance and an invitation for every person in Scotland to join in. As a Commonwealth Games Legacy programme, Get Scotland Dancing aims to get more people dancing in Scotland in 2014 than ever before. There’ll be a lot of different parts to the initiative as it develops, but broadly speaking they’ll be increasing opportunities to dance, promoting mass participation and developing young talent.

These are just the latest projects to be added to an already full programme, but Game On Scotland is a live programme and more materials will be added all the time – sign up to the network to make sure you’re the first to know about new opportunities.

Group tickets now available

5th Nov - Tickets go on public sale

Demand for tickets for next year’s Commonwealth Games has been phenomenal, with 92% of tickets sold through the initial application phase. From 10am this morning (5 Nov), the remaining 8% of tickets went on sale to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis. Approximately 76,000 tickets remain, in six sports – Badminton, Boxing, Lawn Bowls, Rugby Sevens, Squash and Weightlifting (as well as Para-Sport Powerlifting); more than half of these tickets are priced in the cheapest category (£15), which means that under 16s pay just £7.50. There are also a limited number of tickets available for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, in the more expensive categories.

From an education perspective, one of the best things about this phase of ticket sales is the addition of a group sales process, allowing Local Authorities, Sports Groups, Schools and Organisations to purchase in larger numbers. If you’re looking to organise an educational outing to the Games then you can now get a whole class or group’s worth of tickets in one go (to a maximum of 50, and inclusive of an appropriate number of chaperones). Group sales can only be made by contacting the Glasgow 2014 ticketing hotline on 0844 249 2014 and are for recognised groups only.

For more information on ticketing, visit the Glasgow 2014 ticketing website tickets.glasgow2014.com.

Go Scotland!

17 Sports, 1 Team (copyright Commonwealth Games Scotland)

Earlier this month, marking the 300 days to go milestone, Commonwealth Games Scotland announced the first 27 athletes selected to represent Team Scotland. These will be the first of many sporting Scots who will carry the hopes of a nation when the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games kicks off on 23rd July 2014.

In all 17 sports, athletes have been aiming to meet qualification targets and claim their spot on the team. It’s been a busy and successful summer and next year will be even better!

You can find out more information about the athletes who make up Team Scotland on the Go Scotland! website, where they have a special ‘Meet the Team’ section. The section will be updated with athletes as they are selected.

Game On Scotland will shortly be developing a Team Scotland section within the site, but you can already access lots of information about Scottish athletes at the Go Scotland! site, including a range of downloadable posters of athletes across the 17 sports.

Make a Local Champion feel like a Commonwealth Champion

Glasgow 2014 batonbearer recruitment image

Yesterday (9 October 2013), the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay was launched at Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty the Queen, beginning its epic journey around the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. It won’t be long before the baton returns to Scotland – and organisers want you to be part of its final journey!

The baton holding the Queen’s Message will cross continents, terrains and time zones. Once its has been around the Commonwealth it will come home to Scotland on 14 June 2014 to spend 40 days visiting communities in all 32 local authority areas. On 23 July 2014 the baton will be handed back to Her Majesty at the Opening Ceremony where the 288 day relay will conclude and the Games officially begin.

Glasgow 2014 organisers need up to 4,000 batonbearers to help carry the baton around Scotland on the final leg of its journey, helping to ensure the Games reach every person and every community in Scotland.

Opportunities don’t come much bigger than this to be involved in the Games and your help is needed to find community batonbearers.

You can nominate a family member, friend or someone you know for a position. Organisers are looking for people who have:

• made a positive contribution to the lives of others through community sport;
• undertaken voluntary work or contributed to schools or youth organisations;
• contributed towards greater inclusion for disadvantaged or marginalised sectors of the community;
• been a role model or mentor to young people through sport;
• displayed a level of individual achievement against the odds;
• made a significant contribution to their local community.

Nominations are open to anyone 12 years of age or above and nominations close at 5pm on 22 November 2013.

To find out more and to nominate someone see here and give Scotland’s local champions a thank you they will never forget.

Secondary Schools to get their own batonbearer!

Game On Scotland is delighted to support the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee in providing a unique opportunity for each secondary school, and each special school with pupils of secondary age, in Scotland. Each eligible school’s headteacher has been invited to nominate a pupil to carry the Queen’s Baton on behalf of their school, whilst the relay is in their Local Authority area. Find out more on the Game On Scotland website.
