Burns Night Play

This is a very old bit of news for us but on Burns’ Night (well daytime!) we had a visit from a theatre company who performed a play for us about Robert Burns’ life.

We learned that he was from a farming family and didn’t really have a good education – in fact, his teacher at the small village school told him he was useless! Robert Burns must have been very resilient because he went on to write some amazing poems.

The show was for the whole school and included a mini-story about a little mouse who kept appearing. First he was stealing the food at Burns’ house, then he stole the famous poem ‘My love is like a Red Red Rose’ that Burns had written for a girl he liked! Finally, the mouse made a wee house and we learned that this little house inspired Burns to write another poem about a mouse!

Here’s the poem about the mouse. Can you understand what it says?

Wee, sleekit, cowran, tim’rous beastie,
O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi’ bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an’ chase thee,
Wi’ murd’ring pattle!

I’m truly sorry Man’s dominion
Has broken Nature’s social union,
An’ justifies that ill opinion,
Which makes thee startle,
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An’ fellow-mortal!

I doubt na, whyles, but thou may thieve;
What then? poor beastie, thou maun live!
A daimen-icker in a thrave ‘S a sma’ request:
I’ll get a blessin wi’ the lave,
An’ never miss’t!

Thy wee-bit housie, too, in ruin!
It’s silly wa’s the win’s are strewin!
An’ naething, now, to big a new ane,
O’ foggage green!
An’ bleak December’s winds ensuin,
Baith snell an’ keen!

Thou saw the fields laid bare an’ wast,
An’ weary Winter comin fast,
An’ cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell,
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
Out thro’ thy cell.

That wee-bit heap o’ leaves an’ stibble,
Has cost thee monie a weary nibble!
Now thou’s turn’d out, for a’ thy trouble,
But house or hald.
To thole the Winter’s sleety dribble,
An’ cranreuch cauld!

But Mousie, thou are no thy-lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men,
Gang aft agley,
An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!

Still, thou art blest, compar’d wi’ me!
The present only toucheth thee:
But Och! I backward cast my e’e,
On prospects drear!
An’ forward, tho’ I canna see,
I guess an’ fear!

Maths – Probability

We have moved onto a new area of maths in our lessons. It’s called probability. We talked about words we use to describe how likely events are to happen. Things like:

  • impossible – e.g. It’s impossible for Zainab to drive her dad’s car this afternoon!
  • unlikely – e.g. Mrs Harker is unlikely to close the school tomorrow and give us all another week’s holiday
  • 50-50 – e.g. Mrs Brightman’s baby had an equal chance of being a boy or a girl (although we now know it’s a girl!)
  • likely – e.g. Mrs Brightman is likely to make us work hard today!
  • definite – e.g. Today is Monday so tomorrow will definitely be Tuesday.

We have learned to play a game based on probability that used to be on the TV called ‘Play your Cards Right’ – look at this video:

Catholic Education Week

During Catholic Education Week, our class used blocks to show how much money the:

  • poorest
  • poor
  • average
  • rich
  • richest

…people in the world have.

We all discovered that we are some of the richest people in the world!

If you have a bed in a safe house, you’re rich! We all thought we were average but it was amazing to find out how much money we all have in reality.

Debating with Luisa from the Debate League

On Fridays this term, Luisa from The Debate League comes to our class and does debating skills with us.

We debate on subjects like:

  • Should girls and boys only schools be banned
  • Should kids under 11 be allowed technology

We’ve learned two words that are very important in debate: proposition and opposition. These are the two sides of the argument. We know we have to say ‘This house believes’ when we start making our points and that we can interrupt the speakers by shouting ‘Point of information’. They don’t have to listen to us though! They can say ‘DENIED!’ and keep talking.

GlaswegAsians Exhibition at Scotland Street

We went to the Scotland Street Museum and we saw two exhibitions about immigrants from southern Asian countries who have come to Glasgow.

We saw how they have set up successful businesses and made a lot of money for example from restaurants, fabric making and shops. We also learned that Asians have become councillors in the Scottish Government. There was a special Qu’ran that he had sworn himself into his role with.

It was so interesting for those of us with a Pakistani or Indian background as it showed us a timeline of when our families moved to Scotland.

Lego Creativity Challenge!

Did any of you watch ‘Lego Masters’ on the television last year? Well P6/7 chose to have their own ‘Lego Challenge’ for their class dojo prize last Thursday.

Every time we achieve another 600 points as a class (that’s almost everyone earning 30 points), we have a class treat. This time, we had a few things going on in the classroom: a movie on, lego challenge happening and cooking ‘something Chinese’! It was amazing fun and very creative!

Could you make any of these out of lego at home or next time we have a wet play?

  • A sea creature
  • An unhealthy food item
  • Something from your pencil case
  • A mode of transport
  • A boat that will float
  • A piece of fruit

Debate League

One of our focuses for this term is learning about the language of debate and being able to provide evidence and reasons for our opinions. Creating an argument is about more than just shouting loudly!

We have the English Speaking Union working with us on Fridays this term to help us to understand the roles and language involved in debating.

Louisa, our debating coach, has introduced us to:

  • motions
  • proposition
  • opposition

We had our first mini-debate on Friday on whether immigration should be allowed?

Irfan astounded us all on the opposition when he said:

“You might think we are a rich country but we have an NHS crisis at the moment, we have to pay to leave the EU and the pound is dropping!”

We all think he might be the next Chancellor of the Exchequer!

Divided City

Our text this term is Divided City by Theresa Breslin. A story set at the time of writing (2005) in Glasgow – our home city! It is a really important novel for Glasgow school children as it looks at the history of Glasgow and some of the reasons for rivalry between different groups of people.

This book also fits perfectly with the St. Albert’s whole school focus of ‘Migration’ for the term because one of the characters is an asylum seeker. We’ll be learning the differences between:

  • immigrant;
  • asylum seeker; and
  • refugee.

Perhaps you can look these terms up and discuss them with your parents/siblings at home?
