Managing Risk

  • Pupils will only be allowed on a ski slope with an instructor or a qualified group leader.
  • Teachers will meet groups at lunch to check in with pupils.
  • Energy Management – Pupils will be informed that it is up to them to ensure they are eating enough to fuel themselves for the busy day ahead. This will be monitored by teachers. A healthy diet will be encouraged throughout the week.
  • All pupils will be asked to complete a behaviour contract before leaving on the trip. This has to be signed by pupils and parents.
  • Staff and instructors will keep a close eye on the weather and if the weather is not suitable for skiing then alternative arrangements will be devised.
  • Pupils must wear helmets when on the mountain and when ice skating.
  • Pupils encouraged to bring and wear sun screen. Also issued by staff every morning.
  • D Jack, group leader, has been first aid trained, allergies trained, snowboard group leader trained, and diabetic trained. Other teachers attending will be encouraged to completed their first aid training.
  • Staff are expected to be competent on a mountain so they can quickly travel to any pupil who may be in need for whatever reason. At least 66% of staff should be able to navigate around the mountain quickly. Other staff who aren’t as confident on a mountain will likely be in a group with the beginner pupils for a fast response and close observation.
  • Pupils are encouraged to gain some ski experience before attending the trip in order to reduce the risk of injury, either through the school or privately.
  • Pupils are encouraged to maintain a basic level of fitness in the run up to the trip.
  • Insurance is provided by Glasgow City Council
