National 4 Business Management

The SQA National 4 Business Management course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic world of business. Designed to develop an understanding of the crucial role that businesses play in our society this course provides learners with essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s fast paced working environment.

Throughout the course, students will explore key business concepts including business operations, marketing, finance and human resources. The SQA National 5 Business Management course offers students an engaging introduction to the dynamic world of business. National 4 Administration & IT

The SQA National 4 Administration & IT course teaches pupils the fundamentals of administration such as effective communication, organisation, time management and customer service. They also explore essential IT skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation software.

The skills acquired though this course are valuable not only in administrative roles but also in various other professional contexts where IT and organisational skills are highly south after.

The course comprises of three units:

  • Administrative Practices
  • IT Solutions for Administrators
  • Communication in Administration
How will I be assessed?

All internal assessment. SQA Added Value Unit and SQA Unit Assessments for each unit.

National 5 Administration & IT

The SQA National 5 Administration & IT course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental administrative practices and essential information technology skills.

Throughout the course, students learn how to effectively organise and manage administrative tasks, handle information and use office software packages such as word processing, spreadsheets and databases. It encourages critical thinking, creativity and teamwork through collaborative projects and interactive learning experiences. Students develop employability skills such as time management, organisation and communication.

SQA National 5 Administration & IT provides a foundation for students aspiring to pursue careers in administration, business or IT related fields.

What will I learn in this subject?

The course comprises two areas of study:

Theory 

Candidates are introduced to the responsibilities of organisations, the skills/qualities and tasks (duties) of the administrative support function, and the impact of these in the workplace.

IT applications 

Candidates develop skills in IT, problem-solving, organising, and managing information. They select IT applications to create and edit business documents, gather and share information, and develop skills to communicate information.

How will I be assessed?

SQA Exam – 42%

SQA Assignment – 58%

Higher Administration & IT

The SQA Higher Administration and IT course is designed to provide students with advanced skills and knowledge in the areas of administration, information technology and business. The course is aimed at preparing students for employment in administrative roles, further education or training. It combines theoretical learning with practical application to ensure students are well-equipped to handle real-world administrative tasks.

Throughout the course students will develop their IT and administrative skills, effective communication and customer service, problem solving and critical thinking and organisational and time management abilities. The course is designed to equip students with the essential skills required for modern administrative roles, making it a valuable qualification for future career or educational opportunities.

What will I learn in this subject?

The course consists of two areas of study:

Administrative theory and practice

Candidates develop their understanding of the factors contributing to an efficient administrative function. These include time and task management, effective teams, complying with workplace legislation, the impact of digital technologies, and customer care.

IT applications 

Candidates develop skills in organising and managing information using digital technology in administrative contexts. They use software application functions to analyse, process and manage information, in order to create and edit complex business documents. Candidates develop an understanding of barriers to communication and ways of overcoming them to ensure communication is effective. They also develop skills, knowledge and understanding of how to maintain the security and confidentiality of information.

How will I be assessed?

SQA Exam – 50 marks

SQA Assignment – 70 marks

National 4 Computing Science

The course consists of the following units of study:
  • Information Systems Design and Development: Creation of databases and web pages.
  • Software Design and Development: Creation of programs using Visual Basic programming language.
This year the course will be assessed by the following:
  • Creation of a simple web page
  • Creation of a database and testing by creating a simple query
  • Creation of a program – design and coding of a program to solve a simple problem

National 5 Computing Science

This year the course consists of the following: 

  • Information Systems Design and Development: Design and creation of a relational database and searching the database by using SQL coding.
  • Software Design and Development: Design and creation of programs to solve complex programs.
  • Computer Systems: Understanding of computer hardware and software as well as how computers represent data. 
 This year the course will be assessed by the following:
  • Practical Coursework Task: This involves undertaking two problem solving tasks – Databases (15 marks) and Programming (25 marks) – worth 40 marks in total. 
  •  Written Exam: This involves 2 sections worth 80 marks in total.  It consists of section 1 (55 marks) which is based on a combination of short response and context-based problem-solving questions on Software Development and Computer Systems.  Section 2 (25 marks) is based on Database Systems and also has a range of short response and context-based problem-solving questions

Higher Computing Science

This year the course consists of the following: 
  • Information Systems Design and Development: Design and creation of web pages using HTML, CSS and Javascrpt coding.
  • Software Design and Development: Design, creation and testing of programs to solve complex programs.
  • Computer Systems: Understanding of computer hardware and software as well as how computers represent data. 
 This year the course will be assessed by the following:
  • Practical Coursework Task: This involves undertaking two problem solving tasks – Web Design (15 marks) and Programming (25 marks) – worth 40 marks in total
