Covalent and Ionic Bonds

To this point in Chemistry, you have tended to use the rule that a compound formed between two (or more) non-metal atoms will form a covalent bond and a compound between metal and a non-metal atoms will form an ionic bond.  This rule works very well, however it is useful if we can understand why this is the case.

The key to understanding this section is electronegativity.  You have already encountered this in the previous section and should refresh your understanding if necessary.
