Enrolments for P1 in August 2024 will open on Monday: Click here for more information.

If you are considering retaining your child for an additional Nursery Year and have not already discussed it with me, please contact me as soon as possible through the school office. This applies to children who turn five between mid-August 2024 and end of February 2025, their parents can choose to enrol them in P1 or retain them for an additional nursery year. The paperwork for the additional nursery year must be completed by end of day on 31st January. There are pros and cons to retaining and you must discuss this with me to get the full picture. Gilbert Valentine’s Saturday Football Club

Mr Rose has sent out the information about Gilbert’s Club in a separate email, it is also available here: Advice January 2024

Gilbert has arranged a girl’s football match against Newport PS on 19th January and a Boys match on 26th January. Both will be after school at Waterstone Crook. Gilbert will collect the children from school and walk them along the nature trail. If he selects your child for the match, you will receive a note in their school bag with the arrangements. Please note that the matches are arranged and run by Gilbert as part of his Saturday Football Club – the risk assessment of the outing lie with him and any questions about it should be directed to him  – his contact details are in the advice note.

We very much value our partnership with Gilbert and I thank him for the opportunities his club offers our pupils.

Just a reminder that these are on Thursday next week.

School Uniform

Just a polite reminder that all children should come to school wearing their uniform, including a school jumper everyday. Red and Navy are our school colours and ideally this is the colour there jumper should be. Black and grey are also allowed. School jumpers should be a sweatshirt pullover or cardigan. Hoodies and Fleeces are not suitable for the classroom not or different coloured or patterned items or ones with pictures or slogans.

P7 will get their leavers hoodies in time to wear them to Ardory. Once the Ardroy trip is over, they will be allowed to wear them to school. They will be allowed to wear them in class but the leavers hoody will be the only hoody allowed. I also advise you to make sure they also have a school jumper because the hoody won’t be suitable for the three day visit to Madras.

As we approach Christmas, some children will start to want to wear Christmas jumpers etc to school. Please keep your child in uniform through December. They will be able to bring in party clothes to change into on their party day and everyone will be invited to wear no-uniform/Christmas jumper on the Christmas Lunch Day and panto day. It makes these days more special if everyone is in uniform for the rest of December and it helps us to keep a sense of purposeful calm.

Thank you for your support.

Pantomime Contribution

All children (Nursery – P7) will watch M&Ms production of Cinderella in the school hall on Wednesday 19th December. We are meeting much of the cost of this from school fund plus a generous contribution from Parent Council (who have also offered to purchase a treat for all children). To cover the rest, we are asking for a £4 contribution per child. Please pay this by 19th December using iPayImpact – please choose the fund called School Pantomime. Please don’t send cash but if you have problems accessing iPayImpact, contact Lisa in the office and she will help. If you can’t meet the cost, please email me in confidence to let me know – your child can still attend – no one will miss out!

Playground Snacks

P1-7 parents – please send your child with a playground snack each day.  We recommend fruit, biscuits, crackers, oats bars cheese. One snack is all there is time for. From Monday, there will be a bowl of apples (funded by Parent Council – thank you!) which any child can help themselves to if they have forgotten a snack. Sweets made purely from sugar or sweeteners (Moan, haribo, tic tacs, lollies etc) are not suitable snacks as they do not fill children up and should not be brought to school. Staff will ask children to put these away if they see them with them at playtime – there will be the option to take an apple if this is their only snack. Many thanks for your support.

Family Charity Challenge

When you wish upon a star, are a charity who do amazing work granting wishes for children living with life threatening illnesses. They are looking for families to participate this winter in the Elf Wish Walk campaign to help them raise money. Details of the campaign are here:

Thank you to a parent of the school who brought this to my attention.

Quiet Playground Clubs

We are looking to extend our quiet playground provision by providing clubs and opportunities for children of all ages.  We are looking for donations of unwanted items to support this. If you have any of the following which you no longer need or want, please hand them in to the school office:

picnic rugs (with waterproof backing)

chess sets

Rubik’s cubes

Lego sets

Top Trumps

Large Cones (to use as goal posts)

There may be other items we need in future depending on ideas raised by the children.

P1-4 Christmas Show

After the holidays, the teachers will begin allocating parts in the Christmas Show. All children who want to will be able to try saying a line or section from the show and many will be chosen for a speaking part. No child will have to have a speaking part if they don’t want to and it may well be the case that more children want a speaking part then will be available but no one need worry! Every child will have an important part to play in the show whether or not they have a speaking part – they will all get a chance to shine on stage.

Youth Music Initiative – Pipe Band Drumming

I am excited to tell you that all P5 children will be learning pipe band drumming. This will start on 26th October and continue for the rest of the school year. It is part of their music curriculum and is fully funded by the Youth Music Initiative.

School Tea Towel

In the first week back after the October holiday, all children will be drawing a self-portrait for the school tea towel. their portrait and first name will be printed on the tea towel. If you want to opt your child out of this, please email lucy.jess@fife.gov.uk by 23rd October to do so. If we don’t hear from you, your child’s picture and name will be included.  There is no obligation to buy.

There will be a P5-7 Basketball Cluster League event on  20th November 2023 @ Madras College 15:30-5:15pm. After the holidays, you will be able to tell us if your child would like to go along and we will pick a team from amongst those who are keen.

If any child is reluctant on the day we won’t make them so if you feel strongly that you want the photo taken, please make sure your child knows your wishes. If you have a younger child who is not yet at our school and would like to include them in the photo, please call Lisa in the office to make an arrangement.  If you have an extended family group at the school (e.g. cousins) and would like a photo of all the children, please contact Lisa to discuss – we will do this it possible. Collection for Taybridgehead Foodbank
Next week we will be hosting a collection for Taybridgehead Foodbank ahead of our harvest service on Friday 6th October. Please bring any donations of food, toiletries and any other consumables to the school office and we will store the items here for collection.

Christmas Fundraisers
We have decided not to do the Christmas Card fundraiser this year as the timescale is a bit tight around the strike days and the October holiday. In stead we will be doing a school tea towel – more details to follow. We will also be selling our popular school calendar for £5 each. It will feature children’s artwork on a monthly theme rather than the self portraits as they will be on a the tea towel. You will be able to pre-order these next term to receive before the end of term. The tea towel and calendar will both make lovely Christmas gifts for friends and family members.

Violence and Aggression Statement
It is good practice for schools to have very clear expectations for all stakeholders in this very important area. Our statement is available here and I encourage all parents to read it.

Firework Safety Competition
A competition has come into school from the SPCA. Its too tight a turn around for us to enter as a school but if your child is interested in getting involved, you can submit an individual entry as a parent. Click here for the competition pack.

Strikes Next Week
Thank you to all parents for their support of the school in the difficult context of the strike days next week. The final information about P1-7 home learning  will come out on Monday. We know and understand that many if not all of you will need to juggle childcare and work and you will be able to work your child’s home learning flexibly around this. P5-7 will be able to access and do their tasks independently (as long as they can log into GLOW – contact me by 9am on Monday if they can’t).
Best wishes
Lucy Jess
Rag Bag Collection
Rag Bag will be coming to school on Monday 25th September.

Items We Collect

  •  Wearable Clothing
  •  Paired Shoes

Milk Fund Term 2

The milk fund is now open so that you can order and pay for milk for next term. It will close at the end of term and not be open in the holidays. We hope this will make it easier to remember to get your child’s milk ordered and avoid disappointment.

Should you wish your child to have school milk next term (23rd October – 20th December) please log into their Ipayimpact account to make the payment before this term ends on 6th October.

The cost for the term will be £9.75

Please can you make sure you select the Milk Fund account when adding payment, and not the School Meal Fund – as we cannot transfer the payment across.
Once the milk fund closes on the 6th October, we will not be able to accept payments after that time. Unfortunately, if you miss the cut of time, this means  you will not be able to order milk for your child for next term.

As you are ordering in term time, you can call the office if you have any problems with your order.

If you applied for the free school meal grant your child will get milk for free, so please don’t add payment to their account.

Weekly Information – 15th September 2023

Dates Next Week

Monday 18th September – P1 and 7 dental checks

Monday 18th September  – P1-3 having a Youth Music Initiative Workshop

Thursday 21st September – P1-7 Flu Vaccinations

The class journals will go live next week.

You will receive an email when your child’s journal is ready.

Medication in School

In line with Fife Council medication procedures we are now unable to administer medicines which do not have a pharmacist’s label clearly stating the required dose to be taken. Any medication which would need to be administered during the school day will require an administration of medicine form to be completed and a pharmacist’s label attached. Just as a reminder medicines of this type can be acquired through minor ailments at the pharmacist.

Toys and other items from home

Our school rule is that no toys should come into school from home. It can lead to mix ups and upsets.

Show and Tell: If your child’s teacher wants them to bring something in from home they will put a message on Seesaw so that you know your child is allowed to bring something that day. If there hasn’t been a message on Seesaw, your child is not to bring a toy in, even if they say it is to show.

Fidget items: a few children benefit from having a fidget item at certain times of the day. If this is the case, we will provide them with one in consultation with you. No child needs to bring a fidget toy in from home and we ask that you do not allow your child to do so.

Personal achievements: if your child wins a trophy, medal or certificate outside of school, they are welcome to bring it into school to show the class so they can celebrate their achievement. They are also welcome to share achievements in class even if there is nothing to show – for example you don’t get a certificate when you learn to ride your bike but it is definitely an achievement worth sharing! We love to learn about what the children do out of school. Parents can email me at lucy.jess@fife.gov.uk to share achievements and I will forward onto the class teacher.

Names on school clothing

Please can you make sure all items of school clothing are named – we can’t return lost property other wise.

Assembly

One of the priorities in our School Improvement Plan this year is to further develop our relationships, behaviour and anti-bullying practice and capture it in policy. As a starting point to involving the children in this, we have started some work today in engaging with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The key learning at Assembly was:

  • The UNCRC is a list of promises made by almost all the governments in the world to give children what they need. There are 54 promises called articles.
  • Rights are what you need, not necessarily what you want.
  • No child can have their rights taken away from them but all children need to act in a way that does not stop other children losing their rights.
  • Part of our job in school is to teach children about their rights and about how to respect others’ rights. The key articles for us in school are:

3: All decisions should be made with children’s best interests and safety in mind.

24: The right to health care, nutritious food and clean water.

27: The right to an adequate standard of living.

28: The right to a primary education.

29: One of the goals of education is to teach respect for the environment and for other children an adults.

31: The right to play and relax.

I have asked all classes to discuss this a little further before next week’s assembly and to link the articles to our school values and the Wellbeing Indicators which often talk about in school (safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible, included). You might also like to discuss these articles at home and link them to things you do in your family e.g everyone brushes their teeth before bed (even if they don’t want to!) because you have the right to health (article 24).

Save the Date

Madras College will be hosting a workshop on social media with input from Police Scotland for parents with children attending the cluster primary schools. This will be an opportunity to come along and engage with other parents about Social Media on the following dates:

  • Social Media – the positives and negatives
