Nurture HUB

As a Nurturing School, St Leonard’s Primary School uses the Nurture Principles to enable children to develop socially and emotionally throughout all aspects of their learning.  Our Nurture HUB offers all children within the school the opportunity to build on these principles in a more relaxed setting working within a smaller group.

Our Nurture Groups or HUB groups support children throughout the school with their social, emotional and mental wellbeing. Nurture principles are based on Attachment Theory – the idea that developing positive relationships with family, peers and other adults from an early age facilitates healthy development.  Nurture practices aim to give children the social and emotional skills to do well at school and with peers to develop their resilience.

Our nurture HUB groups are a short-term, focused intervention for around 3 to 6 children, led by a HUB member of staff and member of support staff.  Children attending the nurture group remain an active part of their mainstream class, spending appropriate times within the HUB according to their need, and typically return full time to their own class within two to four terms.  We also offer weekly groups to children who have been identified by teachers who require additional emotional or support needs.  These groups operate on a weekly basis for about an hour, pupils remain with their class full-time.

HUB nurture groups assess learning and social and emotional needs and offer the help that is needed to remove any barriers to learning. The relationship between the two nurture staff and pupils is always nurturing and supportive, providing a role model for children.  Food is shared at ‘breakfast’ or ‘snack time’ with much opportunity for social learning, helping children to attend to the needs of others, with time to listen and be listened to.

As the children learn academically and socially, they develop confidence, become responsive to others, learn self-respect, and take pride in their relationships and in achieving.  Our nurture HUB support is not limited to the nurture HUB room, we enjoy outdoor learning as much as possible not only within the school grounds but also within the local area and community.  St Leonard’s Primary School is making great progress towards embedding the six Nurture Principles and practice at a whole school level, providing appropriate support for all pupils attending the school.

Nurture Principles:

1. Children’s learning is understood developmentally.

2. The HUB offers a safe base.

3. Nurture is important for development of self-esteem.

4. Language is understood as a vital means of communication.

5. All behaviour is communication.

6. Transitions are significant in the lives of children If you are interested in finding out more about Nurture, please visit: www.nurtureuk.org
