P3 – ROOM 6

Hi, we are Primary3 in Room 6, and our class teacher is Mrs Clews.

Our Gym days are Thursday and Friday, and children are permitted to come to school already dressed in appropriate clothing for PE or, alternatively, come in their uniform and change prior to the gym lesson.

Please make sure that children’s names are clearly marked on all clothing and other personal belongings to ensure stray items can be returned.

We also have Outdoor Learning on a Wednesday afternoon. At present, we are concentrating on the school grounds, though it is hoped that we can extend this to areas, such as the beach, Silverburn, etc. When this is the case, I would appreciate adult helpers to assist.

This term (August – October 2023) we will be learning the following:

Literacy
  • We always look at the four strands which make up Literacy – Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening – as each one helps us improve our ability with the others.
  • Our class novel this session is “The BFG” by Roald Dahl, and some of our Literacy work will be based on aspects of the book.
  • Reading – your child will shortly be coming home with a reading book so, whenever possible, try to read this with them several times a week to aid their progress.
  • Writing – we are concentrating on improving our sentences. One way we can do this is by including adjectives to describe a character or scene, etc. Handwriting also comes under this heading, as it is important that the correct letter formation is learned as early as possible in a child’s school life so that mistakes don’t creep in.  Grammar and punctuation, as well as building on improving children’s vocabulary, all go together to improve overall Literacy ability.
  • Talking and Listening – These are so important: children need to learn how to listen for information and how to take turns. It is also so vital for children to be able to share ideas and express themselves, both orally and in writing.
Numeracy
  • For a Maths topic, we are looking at Time this term – everyone will be able to identify least o’clock in both analogue and digital – some will add on half past, while others may also include quarter past/to.
  • In Numeracy, we will be looking more closely at numbers sequences, place value , in addition to adding and subtraction. Number bonds to 10 are really important, so any reinforcement at home would be beneficial.
Health & Wellbeing
  • We are working through a programme of lessons called “Cool in School” which is a set of stories about 3 children in school and shows how they each deal with different scenarios in the class and the playground. It teaches children important life skills to help them respond in a more positive way to challenging situations.
Topic
  • Our topic this term is “Rights and Responsibilities”, which is looking more fully into the Rights of the Child, as defined by the United Nations. As a class, we created a Class Charter, choosing four Articles we thought were important for our class – Articles, 2, 28, 29 and 30.
  • So far, we have looked at Needs -v- Wants, and found that our basic needs closely match our Rights.
  • Any personal research that the children may wish to carry out would be gratefully received and displayed on our topic wall.
Art
  • We have completed a self-portrait and are moving on to looking at “Line”.
French
  • We are learning to listen (for understanding) and talk in French in Primary 3.  Classroom commands are given in French and the children are learning to respond to questions in the language too.
  • So far, we have learned days of the week, numbers to 20, some months, greetings and some classroom commands.
