P6/7 and Mrs Waddell

Block One (August – December)

Primary 6/7 have settled in well in our new classroom and we are all looking forward to a fun and productive year of learning.

We have created our Class Charter by looking at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and agreeing on 5 rights we all thought were important in school. We then discussed what adults and children need to do to ensure these rights are upheld.

Our class topic for this term is World in Conflict. We will be learning about World War Two, as well as touching on some more modern-day conflicts such as the Gulf War and the ongoing Ukraine war.

The numeracy topics we are aiming to cover this term are place value, the four operations, shape and angles. We will also be looking at maths in everyday life and the ways maths is used in different jobs.

In literacy we will be looking at creative writing and how to ensure we have a clear beginning, middle and end in our stories. We are also trying to improve our VCOP skills (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) in all our writing. We will be aiming to self-assess and improve our work before handing it in and also editing it afterwards.

We will have group readers to be read both at home and in class and will be using a Literature Circle approach to engage with them and study them in depth.

In Health and Wellbeing we will be covering friendships and feelings. There will be links to our topic throughout this.

We will also be teaching RSHP (Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood). The P6s will be learning about emotional wellbeing, body image, love and relationships and the P7s will be learning about human sexuality.

If you wish to look at any of the RSHP content that will be covered please see the website at:

Second Level

Homework will go out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Please ensure that reading books are returned daily, even if homework has not yet been completed, as this allows us to use the books for Literature Circles.

In addition to the reading homework, the children will be given spelling words to practise each week. This should be done using the Look, Cover, Write Check method. Any other practise the children wish to do is optional but would be beneficial.

PE is on a Monday afternoon and children should wear their PE clothes to school that day.

If your child would like to complete some additional homework to help further their learning and understanding, please have a look at the list of websites below which you may find useful.
