P2 and Miss Ramsay

Block Two (January – March)

Hello, and welcome to the class page for Primary 2!

The class teacher is Miss Ramsay. Mrs Daly teaches the class on a Tuesday afternoon, and on a Wednesday for the full day.

Health and wellbeing

The topics that we will be covering during this block for Health and Wellbeing are;

  • Friends and friendship
  • My body
  • Privacy
  • People who help and look after me

These are part of the first level learning outlined by RSHP (Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood).

We discuss our school values daily – Safe, Ready and Respectful, and the children have been identifying what these different values look like in school/out of school. We are continuing to work on these this term.

Literacy

In literacy this term we will be focusing on:

  • Revision of Jolly Phonics – 42 letter sounds
  • Continuing to read and write tricky words.
  • Punctuation
  • Nouns, adjectives and verbs. We are continuing to develop our knowledge of these through using them within our writing.
  • Vowels and consonants.
  • Writing for different purposes – poems, fact files, lists.
  • Features of language

Within literacy we are also learning about fairy tales, linked to imaginative writing. We will start to learn about the features of a fairy tale, such as the setting, characters and plot. The children will experience writing their own imaginative story/fairy tale. Some of our literacy lessons will be linked to our topic – The Magic Castle

Homework

Homework is given out every Friday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. Children are provided with a reading book, and a word wall of common words to practise. Please ensure that your child brings their homework folder into school every day as we use these throughout the week.

Numeracy and Maths

In numeracy this term we will be focusing on:

  • Money – We are continuing to develop our knowledge of money, which we began last term. This term we are going to focus on counting coins, making amounts, and giving change.
  • Time
  • Measurement
  • 2D and 3D shape – We are going to begin learning about patterns and symmetry.
  • Numbers to 100 and beyond
  • Addition and subtraction

We are also going to focus on use of practical resources and strategies which can help us in numeracy.

The children will be using their maths workbooks to support their progression in numeracy and mathematics, as well as having access to numeracy resources during lessons, and during play. We are also beginning to use the netbooks during numeracy lessons to support our learning.

Topic

Our topic for this term is The Magic Castle.

We have started by creating a mind map of the things that we already know about castles, and the things that we would like to find out. The children shared lots of ideas and are very excited about this topic.

We are going to learn all about castles and their features. As our topic relates to Scotland, we are going to learn about some Scottish history, and famous Scottish castles. As we learned about materials in Block 1, we are going to use this knowledge to help us when discussing the materials used to build castles. We will be engaging in learning linked to STEM, as we design and build models of castles.

We have also been discussing ways that a castle might be magic and have linked this to our learning about fairytales in literacy. The children were keen to share their knowledge of classic fairy tale stories. We are looking forward to seeing where our learning will take us!
