P2/3 and Mrs Goodlad

Block Two (January – March)

Hello and welcome to P2/3 with Mrs Goodlad.

 

Literacy

This block we will be covering:

· Blending and building CVC and CVCC words.

· Recognising and spelling 100 high frequency common words.

· Long vowel sounds and magic e.

· Using different connectives and openers in our writing.

· Using paragraphs.

· Alphabetical order and introducing dictionaries.

· Verbs

· Past tense – adding ‘ed’ and doubling rule

· Plurals – ‘s’ or ‘es’

· Possessive adjectives.

· Comprehension – answering literal questions and basic inferential questions. We will learn how to locate key words in the text and using these to answer questions. Comprehension will be from a mixture of our group reading books, class novel and textbook passages.

· We will also be developing our literacy circle skills with a focus on the questioner role this block.

· Scots words, songs and learning to recite a scots poem.

 

Numeracy

This Block in Numeracy we are learning:

· Daily focus on number (through whole school Big Maths programme) – counting in 10s, hundreds, identifying 2,3,4 digit numbers, revision of place value, doubling and skip counting.

· Addition and Subtraction

· Measurement

· Time

· Position and direction

We continue to practise counting in 2s,3s, 5s and 10s daily through mental maths games and songs.

 

Homework

Homework will go out every Friday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. The homework will consist of a reading book and a reading record for you to sign each week. Pupils who are reading books from our Oxford Reading Tree scheme (ORT) will also be provided with a word wall of common words for them to practise. Please can you ensure

that your child brings their homework folder to school every day as we will need access to their reading book during class time to practise.

Topic

Our topic this term will be The Vikings. Here are some of the things we are going to cover:

· Using a map to locate the Viking homelands and where the Vikings settled.

· Learning all about longboats Vikings used to travel.

· The ‘Up Helly Aa’ festival

· Viking clothing, food and housing

· Researching Viking gods

· Viking warriors and the Battle of Largs
