P2 and Miss McComiskie

Block One (August – December)

Hi and welcome to primary 2.

We are a class of 25 children and can be found on the bottom floor in room 3. In primary 2, we are committed to being safe, ready and respectful and recognise this with our class recognition board and weekly certificates.

Our topic this block is Grand Designs. We will be focusing on learning about different types of buildings and bridges. We will have lots of opportunities to construct different things over the course of this topic.

In numeracy, we are going to be working on the structure of number, place value and estimation and rounding. After the October holidays, we will move onto addition and subtraction. In maths, we are working on shape.

Everyday after break, we read a different story whilst we have our milk or water and then answer a Blooms question based on this. In reading, we are going to be practising our tricky words as well as reading our reading books with Miss McComiskie in our groups. We will also begin to look at the literacy circle jobs: predictor and word wizard. In writing, we are going to be focusing on letter formation, capital letters and full stops. Our writing context will often link to the stories we read after break or our topic.

Our PE day is a Thursday and children should aim to come to school dressed in their gym kit every week. We are going to begin with establishing routines in PE by playing some team building games and taking part in fitness activities. We will then move onto gymnastics.

As part of our health and wellbeing learning, we will also be using the relationships, sexual health and parenthood (RSHP) resource. We hope any questions you have can be answered on the RSHP website: https://rshp.scot/first-level/. This term, we will focus on; friends and friendships and my body.

Reading homework will go home every Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Homework will not be given, if the previous book has not been returned.

Every Friday, we will have a class meeting to discuss the children’s highlights and lowlights of the week. We will also do a compliment circle and play a circle time game to finish.

On a Monday afternoon, P2 will have Mrs Chalmers. Mrs Chalmers is looking forward to doing French and outdoor learning with the class. She asks that every Monday, children come to school with suitable clothing to take part in outdoor activities as they will be going outside no matter the weather (waterproofs, wellies etc).

We are looking forward to having a fantastic first block in P2!
