Our Week, Our School 30/10/26

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to our weekly family and community communication that provides a Headteacher overview of the weeks events and other school-based information.

The week that’s been…

What an incredibly busy week at KHS and one I definitely need the weekend to rest before next week!

On Monday, our young people attended their first house assembly with their new team. Deputes and Guidance teachers introduced themselves to their respective houses an outlined the role of each house committee. There was input from our Learning Ambassadors around questioning, and we had 4 candidates for the Scottish Youth Parliament outlining their manifestos prior to voting opening. A very positive start to our new houses.

On Wednesday, we welcomed families of S1 to KHS for their first Parent / Carer evening with us. It was a very busy night with lots of great conversations taking place about how each young person was settling in and their progress in learning.

On Thursday, we welcomed a team of professionals from Fife Council and beyond to support our Learning Partnership focussed on Learning, Teaching and Assessment. Across the day, colleagues took part in learning observations, focus groups with our learners and staff and professional discussions with key members of our team. Some of the key strengths noted are as follows:

  • Use of iPads to support learning – appropriate use in most classes with very good practice observed in a majority of lessons
  • Launchpad for learning – well embedded and consistent across the school – provided an excellent platform for learning and supported a calm and consistent learning environment – ‘flawless and strong across almost all classes’
  • Emerging signs of improved pace of learning across most classes
  • Increased use of plenaries in a minority of lessons
  • Ambition is emerging as a key value across most classes
  • Almost all learners engaged in learning across learning episodes
  • Emerging evidence of learners leading their learning in class
  • Evidence of good understanding and retrieval questioning
  • All classes had positive relationships, and all showed real care and nurture for learners
  • Kind learners who are ready to learn

Over the week, our Prefects have been part of supporting various events, ably led by the Pupil Leadership Team. Many parents, carers and visiting colleagues have shared positive views and comments over recent days and I think it’s important to recognise the amazing work they do. Well done to all!

The week ahead…

Next week, we have an S4 Information evening (Tuesday), Remembrance assemblies (Wednesday) and our second PACK (Parent / Carer Council) meeting takes place on Wednesday (agenda is available).

I hope you have a great weekend when it comes.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay

Headteacher
