Four of our best mathematicians headed to The University of St. Andrews to compete in a half-day maths challenge event. The day started with a group round, where the team split themselves up according to skill set, to tackle a variety of problems laid out in different ways. After this, there was a Crossnumber round (like a Crossword, but maths!), where the team split in two, and had to solve the “across” or “down” clues, and pass messages across the table to help the other half of the team. Strategy played an important part in this round! Finally, there was the shuttle round, where the answer to the first question was required to solve the second question, and so on throughout a chain. If the first answer was wrong, so were the rest!

A great day was had by all. Unfortunately, we didn’t progress to the National Final, but we will try again next year. Get in touch with your maths teacher if you think you could help guide a team to victory…
