Waste Minimisation

This term primary 5N and primary 6 are responsible for waste minimisation in our school.  This was the old 3 R Warriors responsibility.

WHY should we recycle?

– All the plastic bottles you put into the normal rubbish bin end up going to the tip.  At the tip the rubbish is either burned or buried in the ground.  Many plastics don’t break down very easily when put into the ground and so will stay around for years.

– If we recycle our bottles by putting  them into the blue recycling bins around the school we are making sure those bottles and cans are destined for a brighter future!

We can’t keep burying and burning rubbish forever!

Remember to –

*                Take the lid off your bottle before you put it in the recycling bin.

*                The lid can be recycled too!

*                If you can, try to rinse the bottles out before putting them into    the bin.  The bins might get a bit sticky if we don’t!

*                Please empty any juice you don’t want into a sink.

*                Reuse the bottle if you can.  You might fill it up again with water or take it home and make it into something.

Breaking News from Primary 5N!

This week Primary5N have been learning how to write news paper reports.  We wrote about a discovery that our Endless Ocean diver had made.  Some reports were about the discovery of a golden shark, an underwater army base and a new creature, a hotdog rainbow pig face fish!  We then turned our news paper reports into TV reports and used the Flip cameras to film these.  We dressed up as different characters and played different parts like the TV presenter, interviewer and eye witnesses.  We watched all the TV reports on Friday and had an awards ceremony.  It has been a fantastic week!

Primary 5N Science

We have been learning about plants in science and we carried out an experiment with cress seeds.  We had different conditions to grow our seeds and we made predictions about what we thought would happen.  The cress which was in the dark cupboard did not grow very well.  We knew this would happen because we have learned plants need light and warmth.  The cress at the window in the glass jars grew really well but the seeds in the sandwich bags at the window did not grow very well.  We think they had too much water!  Have a look at some of our results.

Primary 5N are Waste Watchers!

On Thursday 6th October Jen Barrett came in to school and spoke to us about Falkirk’s Waste Watchers Challenge.  We learned that over £1 billion worth of food is wasted in Scotland each year.  That’s an average of £430 per household, the equivalent of 1 in every 3 shopping bags going straight into the bin!  We are going to work with our parents and complete a food waste diary to note how much food we throw away for 1 week.  We will then try to reduce the amount thrown away the following week.  We will be sharing our results at assembly so watch this space!
