Ceòlas

Air 26mh Am Màrt, fhuair S2 Gàidhlig S2 fiathachadh a dhol a-null gu Taigh-òsta an DI gus pàirt a ghabhail ann an tachartas eadar-ghinealach a chaidh a chur air dòigh le Mary Ann Chaimbeul aig Ceòlas. Bhruidhinn na sgoilearan ri daoine bhon choimhearsnachd mu fhoghlam agus sgoiltean ann an Uibhist agus mar a tha gnothaichean air atharrachadh thairis air na bliadhnachan. B’ e tachartas air leth tlachdmhor a bha seo agus tha sinn taingeil gun d’ fhuair sinn an cothrom pàirt a ghabhail ann.

Group of children at Tigharry Primary School, North Uist, Inverness-shire, 1953

On March 26 March, the S2 Gàidhlig class was invited to the Dark Island Hotel to take part in an inter-generational event organised by Mary Ann Campbell at Ceòlas. Pupils spoke to members of the community who were in attendance about education and school experiences in Uist over the years. This was a hugely enjoyable event and we are grateful for the invitation.

Uist Wool

Anns an Dàmhair, thadhail sgoilearan S2 Luchd-ionnsachaidh air Uist Wool ann an Griomasaigh. B’ e turas air leth inntinneach a bh’ ann. Chunnaic na sgoilearan mar a tha an uidheamachd ag obair agus fhuair iad an cothrom tòrr cheistean a chur air an luchd- obrach.

As part of Heritage Careers Week, the S2 Gaelic Learners class enjoyed a site visit to Uist Wool. Pupils were taken on a tour of the mill and wool centre, learning about the various processing stages of the yarn and wool products. Pupils got to see all the machinery in action, some of which dated back to the 19th century! Inspired by the rich history of the industry, pupils learned about how Uist Wool embraces traditional working methods to create their products, honouring local heritage. With their strong commitment to the local community, pupils also learned about how the mill works collaboratively with local crofters to buy their wool. Pupils had the opportunity to ask questions about the various job roles available within the organisation, which sparked a strong interest in the possibility of work placements!

Museum nan Eilean

S3 Life and Work Class

In November, the class met with curator Nicole Anderson who works for National Museums Scotland. Nicole (Museum Officer) spoke to pupils about her work as a curator and shared interesting details about items in the current exhibition on display at the Sgoil Lionacleit museum. Many thanks to Caitriona MacCuish (Museum Officer) for arranging this visit.

Workplace visits play a fundamental role in developing the young workforce as they allow young people to gain a better understanding of local businesses and organisations and what they do as well as the various job roles and pathways within them.

In November, we welcomed Dr June Graham from the University of Edinburgh who was conducting research for an important study about Gaelic. Eighteen pupils from across a range of year groups took part in the research. We are honoured to have been selected to take part in this study. Dr Graham commended all the pupils who took part for the exemplary manner in which they conducted themselves.

Bonnach Strùthain

Mar phàirt de Sheachdain Dualchas na Cruinne, chunnaic clasaichean S1 Cultair mar a dhèanadh iad bonnach Strùthain. Sheall Ann Marie NicIain, a tha air cliù a choisinn mar shàrbhèicear, gach ceum den reasapabaidh agus abair gun do chòrd e ris a h-uile duine nuair a thàinig e a-mach às an àmhainn!

In order to mark World Heritage Week at the end of October, the S1 Culture classes were treated to a demonstration of how to make a Struan cake by local, expert baker Ann Marie Johnson. Struan cake is traditionally baked in communities in Uist at the end of September to mark the end of the harvest and it is considered a local delicacy.
