B’ e tachartas air leth tlachdmhor a bha seo agus tha sinn taingeil gun d’ fhuair sinn an cothrom pàirt a ghabhail ann.
On March 26 March, the S2 Gàidhlig class was invited to the Dark Island Hotel to take part in an inter-generational event organised by Mary Ann Campbell at Ceòlas. Pupils spoke to members of the community who were in attendance about education and school experiences in Uist over the years. This was a hugely enjoyable event and we are grateful for the invitation.

An t-seachdain seo thadhail sgoilearan S3 air Cnoc Soilleir ann an Uibhist a Deas. Choinnich na sgoilearan ri daoine anns a’ choimhearsnachd agus bhruidhinn iad mu chleachdaidhean na Nollaige. Taing mhòr do Mhàiri Anna Chaimbeul (Ceòlas) a chuir an turas seo air dòigh.
This week S3 pupils visited Cnoc Soilleir in South Uist. The pupils met with folk from the community and discussed traditional and modern Christmas customs. In between the chat, the group was entertained by Kieran MacAulay who played tunes on the accordion. The visit was part of an intergenerational project organised by Mary Ann Campbell who works at Ceòlas. We look forward to taking other school groups to Cnoc Soilleir in the future.
Uist Wool
Anns an Dàmhair, thadhail sgoilearan S2 Luchd-ionnsachaidh air Uist Wool ann an Griomasaigh. B’ e turas air leth inntinneach a bh’ ann. Chunnaic na sgoilearan mar a tha an uidheamachd ag obair agus fhuair iad an cothrom tòrr cheistean a chur air an luchd- obrach.
As part of Heritage Careers Week, the S2 Gaelic Learners class enjoyed a site visit to Uist Wool. Pupils were taken on a tour of the mill and wool centre, learning about the various processing stages of the yarn and wool products. Pupils got to see all the machinery in action, some of which dated back to the 19th century! Inspired by the rich history of the industry, pupils learned about how Uist Wool embraces traditional working methods to create their products, honouring local heritage. With their strong commitment to the local community, pupils also learned about how the mill works collaboratively with local crofters to buy their wool. Pupils had the opportunity to ask questions about the various job roles available within the organisation, which sparked a strong interest in the possibility of work placements!
Museum nan Eilean
S3 Life and Work Class
In November, the class met with curator Nicole Anderson who works for National Museums Scotland. Nicole (Museum Officer) spoke to pupils about her work as a curator and shared interesting details about items in the current exhibition on display at the Sgoil Lionacleit museum. Many thanks to Caitriona MacCuish (Museum Officer) for arranging this visit.
Workplace visits play a fundamental role in developing the young workforce as they allow young people to gain a better understanding of local businesses and organisations and what they do as well as the various job roles and pathways within them.
S3 Languages for Life & Work
This term, the S3 Languages for Life and Work class visited the Benbecula Distillery. Pupils were given a tour of the distillery and learned about the various job roles at the distillery from engineering to hospitality to marketing.
Many thanks to Sharon MacRury, DYW Officer, for arranging this visit.
