This week S3 pupils visited Cnoc Soilleir in South Uist. The pupils met with folk from the community and discussed traditional and modern Christmas customs. In between the chat, the group was entertained by Kieran MacAulay who played tunes on the accordion. The visit was part of an intergenerational project organised by Mary Ann Campbell who works at Ceòlas. We look forward to taking other school groups to Cnoc Soilleir in the future.

Uist Wool

Anns an Dàmhair, thadhail sgoilearan S2 Luchd-ionnsachaidh air Uist Wool ann an Griomasaigh. B’ e turas air leth inntinneach a bh’ ann. Chunnaic na sgoilearan mar a tha an uidheamachd ag obair agus fhuair iad an cothrom tòrr cheistean a chur air an luchd- obrach.

As part of Heritage Careers Week, the S2 Gaelic Learners class enjoyed a site visit to Uist Wool. Pupils were taken on a tour of the mill and wool centre, learning about the various processing stages of the yarn and wool products. Pupils got to see all the machinery in action, some of which dated back to the 19th century! Inspired by the rich history of the industry, pupils learned about how Uist Wool embraces traditional working methods to create their products, honouring local heritage. With their strong commitment to the local community, pupils also learned about how the mill works collaboratively with local crofters to buy their wool. Pupils had the opportunity to ask questions about the various job roles available within the organisation, which sparked a strong interest in the possibility of work placements!

Workplace visits play a fundamental role in developing the young workforce as they allow young people to gain a better understanding of local businesses and organisations and what they do as well as the various job roles and pathways within them.
