Creative Junk Modelling with Mrs Marshall
DEVELOPING CREATIVITY, PROBLEM SOLVING, LEARNING AT HOME WITH JUNK MODELLING
I hope everyone had a lovely weekend staying safe at home. Katie was helping me sort out the recycling and after finding plastic bottles and kitchen roll tubes, she decided to make a space rocket.
Katie used a small plastic bottle and cut a piece off a kitchen roll tube. She stuck them together with sellotape and wrapped red paper around them both, folding the paper at the top to make a triangle shape. She cut out triangle shapes for the fins at the bottom and covered them with red paper and cut other shapes for the windows.
Let’s explore your recycling – first check with your parent or explore it with them, to make sure it is safe to use – and see what you can find. There are lots of great objects such as cereal boxes, egg cartons, plastic milk bottles and kitchen roll tubes which can be ripped or cut and stuck together with sellotape or glue. You can transform the materials into whatever you choose and then paint or decorate them – what can you create? If you are using scissors, remember to sit down and use them safely.
Junk modelling is great fun and helps develop children’s creativity as they use their imagination and construct freely, while developing problem solving skills and resilience as they work out how to make their creation. Constructing also helps develop fine and gross motor skills, which helps children to manipulate tools better and supports the development of early writing skills.
Could you be a future engineer, exploring materials and deciding whether a material is strong enough? Why not send us photos of your creations to our Twitter account?
Have fun being creative!

Warming up for Superhero Sports Day
We will very much miss being with you all for this year’s Sports Day on June 4th, but we hope to try and hurdle over a few obstacles by holding a Virtual Sports Day for all our Superhero children.
Superheroes are tough, superheroes are strong, they persevere, they overcome obstacles, they have amazing super powers, they all have a special talent. And we know you are all Superheroes. So we hope you will enjoy taking part in a garden or open space near you or even indoors! As you can see, Mrs Toman and Mrs Small have been busy warming up in the Hub.
We would love it if you can send us some photos of what you do via Twitter or the school email. Costumes welcome, but optional!
There are many different ways to keep fit and healthy and in the run up to Sports Day we will be sharing a few ideas with you all. Below is a link to a presentation about the Muddy Movers programme, which we have been running for the past 3 years in Busby ELCC, followed by a few ideas of how to keep this going despite lockdown!
Just click on the green text link below to view, then get ready for some Superhero action…!

Outdoor Classroom Day, May 21st
Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign to inspire and celebrate outdoor learning and play. It was born in 2016 with the mission of getting as many children as possible playing and learning outside because:
“Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood, but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.”
Additionally we know that connecting with nature can boost our mental health and well-being and so can be a great way to try and take care of ourselves in these challenging times.
For the past few years, on Outdoor Classroom Day, schools and nurseries have taken all their learning outside for the day. This year in our different circumstances the campaign’s priorities are “to share ideas about connecting to nature and bring people together to celebrate the outdoors.”
The two links below have great ideas on fun, rewarding things to do on Outdoor Classroom Day, May 21st (or any other day!). They include ideas from the RSPB, Wildlife Trusts & the Natural History Museum, as well as ideas for Indoor Nature Activities, Water Fun, Fitness and Weekend Family Fun.
Hope you have lots of Fun!!

In addition below are ideas from your Busby ELCC Team showing some nature experiences the nursery children have enjoyed in the recent past and which you could try at home, including ways to connect with nature both indoors and out:
Find a quiet spot to sit in peace for a while. Lie on your back outdoors, watch the clouds and listen to the sounds…

Being a Parent in Uncertain Times…
Parenting is a fabulous job, but never an easy one, and in uncertain times it can bring many new challenges and questions.
The Triple P Positive Parenting Programme offers advice for any parents who are facing challenges or difficulties or who simply have questions. During the Covid-19 pandemic, their psychologists have produced these 2- minute videos of Quick Tips and Answers to common questions on how to approach parenting in the current situation. Just click on the links listed below the pictures:
Skills for Life
Learning isn’t always about letters and numbers, life skills are just as important while growing up. As children grow they can be encouraged to take more responsibility for dressing themselves for activities such as PE, toileting and at snack/lunch times for things such as opening pieces of fruit and wrappers. Simple things to do in the house to prepare your child for this can be to give them time to let them dress themselves in the morning and when going on outings, and then gradually work on getting faster. Other things can include letting them prepare their own lunch and taking responsibility for helping with chores such as taking out the recycling, sweeping up and hanging out the washing. Every activity done in a home environment can be a learning experience for a child, that opens the door to a world of possibilities and questions.
~~Rhyme of the Week~~
Our Rhyme of the Week
You can have lots of fun with this rhyme! Try finding a space on the floor with your adult or someone in your family, sit down facing each other and hold hands, rock back and forward while singing the song.
You could use props like a wooden spoon for oars or bring your teddy along…
Or change the verse:
Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the river,
if you see a polar bear,
Don’t forget to shiver!
