September Learning Adventures

Interactive Storytelling
Inviting children to take part in a story increases their engagement and stimulates their imaginations. It also leads to retellings, which further increases understanding and language development.

The Tiger who came to Tea: Here the children participated in the Tiger’s tea party as the story was read to them. They were excited to make their own props and recreate the story themselves.

Through Commotion in the Ocean, the children were inspired to draw many ocean scenes and to create their own puppets, which they then used to take on roles in the storytelling.

Different Ways to Sort
In Numeracy we have been focusing on sorting and matching. Here are a few different ways the children have tried sorting, matching and categorising:

Sorting by length

Sorting superheroes & Matching 3D shapes to their outlines

 Matching dots to written numerals

Sorting by colour & Matching pieces
At home you could now try asking your child to sort out the cutlery or their sock drawer…
Technology
The children have been cool with tools and concentrating hard, as they learn how to  use a hammer and nails
safely, and create wooden hedgehogs and other creatures.

From Little Acorns…
We’ve been looking at autumn treasures in a Treasure Box and talking about the changes that happen outside in Autumn.
The children have identified acorns, conkers and pine cones and have been learning how trees shed their seeds at this time of year. They know that “Squirrels eat acorns”, but we also thought about what would happen to the acorns that squirrel forgot.. We looked at a tiny plant grown from an acorn, and together we planted this tiny oak tree in the Eco Garden and watered it.

Maybe one day it will grow into a Great Oak…

Easter Treats!

Making Easter Nests

The children in the yellow and pink group have been learning and talking about nests. We decided that we would make our own easter egg nests!

We all took turns melting the chocolate, mixing the chocolate and the rice krispies together in a bowl! We learned how to scrape the mixture into our cupcake cases by using two spoons and we all did this using our hand eye co-ordination!

‘1,2,3 eggs’

‘We used mini eggs and chocolate rice krispies’

‘We put chocolate and cereal in our nests’

‘I can’t wait to eat mine when I go home!’

‘It smells so nice!’

‘The chocolate was soft and then it went hard!’

We then counted out 3 mini eggs and placed them on our nest! Lastly, we found our plastic bag and picked the one that had our name on it and put our Easter nests in it ready  for us to take home for the Easter holidays!

We all wish the children and their families a very Happy Easter 2021 and we are looking forward to welcoming you back on the 19th April. Happy Holidays!

Our money shopping role play game!

Money Role Play Shopping Game!

The pink and yellow group have been learning about money the past few weeks. The children decided that they wanted to play a shopping game where they have to buy certain objects in the nursery with the different coins and pennies. The pink and yellow group were very engaged in this activity and had lots of fun and improved their numeracy skills!

Some of the children helped to write the number signs for the objects such as ‘1p,2p,5p and 10p’

The children were able to find the correct penny and match it to the correct number sign to buy the object of their choice.

It’s this one!’
‘Let’s play the shopping game!’
‘No, not that one – it’s this one!’
‘That’s a 5 and so is that one!’
‘That’s a 2 and that’s a 2 so that means I can buy it!’
‘I need this penny to buy the book!’
‘The turtle is number 10, 10 pence!’

MONEY

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

The children in the yellow and pink group have been having lots of fun learning about money! The children have participated in a variety of learning activities.

Matching pennies/coins and sorting!!

The pink and yellow group did fantastic in sorting and matching the different coins/pennies and began learning that each coin/penny has different colours, shapes and has a different number on it e.g. 1p,2p,5p,10p,20p,50p,£1,£2.

The children learned some new colours such as Gold and Silver.

They began to learn that the £2 coin is a big coin which is gold around the edges, has a silver circle in the inside and has two 2’s on it for ‘2002’

The children began to realise that a 1p/£1 and a 2p/£2 were different in terms of appearance. Miss McFarlane explained you can buy more objects with £1 and £2 than 1p and 2p.

One child noticed that one coin had a lion on it and one coin had a face on it! Great observing skills!

The children showed fantastic teamwork skills and communication skills!

Coin Rubbing!

The children enjoyed using their fine motor skills to do their coin rubbings! They learned about the different coins/pennies and how they have different shapes, different sizes and different colours!

‘This is a circle one like your glasses!’

‘This one is smaller!’

‘This one is bigger!’

‘It’s brown!’

‘It’s silver!’

The children were very enthusiastic and curious about money and understood that you need money to buy food, clothes, toys etc. The pink and yellow group decided they wanted to play a shopping game! Look out for our next post to see our role play activity!

*Yoga Bugs and Tongue Drums*

We have been very busy  this week exploring many different ways to enhance our health and wellbeing.   Let’s have a look at some of the fabulous experiences  the Red Group have been doing.

Confidence and self esteem

Dare to be different

Crazy hair and yoga cobra pose!

Yoga can be done anywhere you feel comfortable! Trying out  the spider pose …..this strengthens and activates core muscles….also…..helps to refine fine motor skills (e.g writing and dressing) by activating shoulder muscles and many more benefits, as well as being relaxing and lots of fun challenging yourself!

Mindful Walking

On our mindful walk we stopped to focus on our thoughts and sensations in our bodies  with our eyes closed……….

Bumble Bee pose – find your happy hum!
Building resilience and self esteem

We are  ‘All Kinds of People’  – we had fun mixing paint to match our own different skin tones and making a self portrait.

“My skin’s not that colour, maybe if I mix white and orange”
“I’ve got blonde hair
“My hair is pink and brown”

Have a look at our resources!

Health and Well-being with green and blue

For health and well-being week we have been discussing and learning all about our differences and similarities.

We have been reading “Elmer the Elephant“ which conveys the important message of being proud of who you are despite your differences. The children used the character puppets to act out the story as Mrs Branco read to them.

With a choice of a variety of different materials the children were able to create their own transient art elephants.

Some of the children also decorated an elephant picture to take home. Lots of glueing, sticking and colouring to help develop our fine motor skills.

Following on from Elmer the children listened to the story “All Kinds of People” , helping us to visualise the differences there are in people. They then used mirrors to assist in their self portraits, this opened up a dialogue between the children about hair colour, eye colour, height and skin tone etc.

We were able to express to our friends the things we liked about their pictures and the differences between us. Each picture was beautiful and unique just the same as us!

Feeling Groovy 🌞🙏🏼

It is Health and Wellbeing Week! In Pink and Yellow groups we are thinking about our differences & similarities, our feelings, and how to keep ourselves feeling good, relaxed and strong.

Monday is Dare to be Different Day. So we have had cool purple hair, some odd socks and some unusual yet fabulous style choices!

We’ve been talking about the ways we are different and the same.
“I don’t like spiders.”  “I like sprouts!”  “I have blond hair.”  “We all have brains…” “And skeletons.”

Our “Different Together” paper chain:

At Signing- In time each child chose a different patterned strip  to write their name on. We all have different favourite colours and patterns, and we joined them together to make a big paper chain.

We have been talking about different types of people and creating our own tiny people with lollipop sticks, pipe cleaners, buttons, felt, lace, wool and other materials.

“I want her to have red hair at the back and the front. She has a lovely smile.”
“I’m going to add this for a hat.”
“Let’s play with them…”

Noo-Noo (left)
was feeling lonely because of being a bit different, but look how many friends the children have made for Noo-Noo now!

Tuesday is Bounce Back day, all about resilience.  At Together Time, the children all thought of things that make them feel happy and put them in a Thank You Jar with a coloured feather.

Here are some of the things we are grateful for:
“Star Wars and ice cream,” “Pink, and birdies in my garden”, “Daddy, Mummy” , “My sisters” ,”Squirrels in my gardens, and cats… and jewels”, “Tigers and Pokémon.” “The colour red” ,”Jingle bells” “Tickly feathers” , “My puppy and my two guinea pigs”, “Music in your heart.”
Afterwards we made some Sunshine sticks:

Keep smiling!

Potions and Pumpkins 🎃 with the Purple Group

We read ‘Meg and Mog’ and ‘I think my Mum is a Witch’, inspiring us to use our imaginations and create our own spooky stories.

Working collaboratively with our peers we successfully made Pumpkin Soup. We carefully deseeded the pumpkin, using our fine motor skills to chop the pumpkin and other vegetables.

We developed our problem solving skills as we measured and weighed the ingredients.

The children then had the opportunity to taste their creation. ‘This soup is amazing’- R

We created our own potions using  play dough and a variety of other resources, we retold the spells from the book developing our language skills.

We developed our fine motor, sensory and number recognition skills as we matched and counted spiders 🕷 and snakes 🐍 using tweezers in a variety of different experiences.

Super maths with green and blue

Over the past few weeks the children in the Green and Blue group have enjoyed learning all about shape and numbers.  Have a look at all the fun experiences we took part in while developing our early numeracy skills.

The children  sorted and identified shapes whilst taking part in “tap tap” and transient art activities, they then used these shapes to make objects.

They have also used a variety of media to make  shapes, including paint printing and mark making in shaving foam.

Blue and Green group took part in number activities and displayed confidence when counting out and matching corresponding numbers with picture cards.
