Building our 3D Succot

Just before the October week, we celebrated Sukkot by making our own mini 3D sukkah with a partner. When building the Sukkot, we thought about how other people around the world live (some not as lucky as us) and we noticed the similarities between a sukkah and the huts which they live in.
We were given materials which were: hay, paper, and tape.

When we were finished we were also allowed to make one out of Lego, sadly we did not get a turn because we were taking our time with the paper sukkah.
We discussed that if water was to be poured (separately)over the lego and paper sukkah, the paper sukkah would get destroyed. Therefore, it is best to build a sukkah out of strong material.

Challah baking

challah
Last week we made challah!
First we read the instructions to bake the challah.
Mrs Rosenberg came in to help us to make the dough [it was fun and gooey] then she showed us that she baked some challah earlier because it takes 2 hours for it to rise.
Then we used that dough(which Mrs Rosenberg had made) to make challah. We made it by kneading it and plaiting it. (Plaiting was a wee bit tricky!!)
Plaiting challah
We are going to show it off at the Rosh Hashanah assembly along with our beautiful challah covers.

Welcome to Primary 4!

IMG_2266[1]

When we arrived in the Primary 4 classroom, we had no idea what it was going to be like.

Hadi was about to go into Primary 3 instead of walking up the stairs to Primary 4.

Once we got into the classroom, we found our seats(did you know that they are bigger than the Primary 3 seats?) and settled in well. It is  really exciting to be upstairs and have new seats!

We were really excited to know what was coming next as we know that we are now going to get harder subjects.

So far, we have been told that we are going to be learning about, ‘the human skeleton'(science) and we can’t wait to learn some new facts.

We are looking forward to learning new things which we haven’t learned yet and we will keep you up to date with everything we learn in Primary 4!

We love school!

Hi, it’s Jed and Jessica here.

We have loved school this week because we have had P.E., maths and we have learned so much!

We also really love it this week because a new Sumdog competition has started!

In language this week we have been doing creative writing. My story (Jessica) was about a brave boy who didn’t have a roof on his house. My story (Jed) was about a huge snake called a Basilisk who did magic with his wand. We have been looking at adjectives, verbs and connectives. We are both really good at them.

In Maths we have been learning lots of good things. Jessica’s favourite game was table snap and Jed’s was countdown! We all love playing FizzBuzz too!!

The best thing about this week was being entered into a new Sumdog competition and finally finding out that Mrs Fraser is our new teacher next year. We were hoping it would be here because she very nice and really funny. We really liked having her in P1. We can’t wait!

Bye for now,

JED AND JESSICA!!

Hadi and Imogen’s Week!!

Hi people! We are from P3 at Calderwood Lodge. Our names are Imogen and Hadi.

We are here to tell you about our week and all the things we have done…

This was a short week because we had 2 days holiday but we got to go on a school trip yesterday which was great.

Yesterday we went on a trip to the Burrell Collection. Our class had been there before in P1. We went there to see the Egyptian gallery and to investigate some facts. We even got to hold real Egyptian artefacts. Our tour guide was called Louise, we thought she was fun and pretty. Miss Jagger couldn’t believe that we couldn’t locate Egypt on a globe, it was embarrassing! Me (Hadi) was bursting to find Egypt because I knew where it was! We tried to remember that is was green on the globe in case we got asked again later and that it is at the top of Africa. There is an upper Egypt and a Lower Egypt. The language is Arabic. The best thing that happened was that we got to wear white gloves and touch 3000 year old things like necklaces, earrings and amulets. And we got to smell what a mummy would smell like! YUCK!!!!

This week it was a brand new Sumdog competition. We were working against the whole of the UK!
Sumdog is fun because we get to win coins to build our own house and it makes maths even more cool. On Wednesday we were 276th in the competition, by Thursday we were 176th and then on Friday we were 42nd. So we worked really hard but didn’t win this time! Well done to Primary 4 who came 7th!!

On Monday and Tuesday we had holiday, I (Imogen) went horse riding, my horse is called Oscar. It was really good because my horse wasn’t too hard to ride. I (Hadi) went on a picnic and cut my hand when I fell on my scooter!

We were so excited to have Mr Fry and Mrs Santi to teach us this week because Miss Jagger had meetings. We did some really cool maths with Mr Fry, he even did an amazing Murder Mystery problem with us (if you ask nicely we will tell you the answer!!!)

For next week we are excited to see if we get to find out who our P4 teacher is and also for Maths because it is always so much fun with Miss Jagger.

Health Week

Hi it is Edie and Emmen. We are here to tell you about Health Week! It all happened last week!

edie emmen1

We started off doing Zumba with Kirstie. We did lots of dances and learnt some new moves. It was really fun!

IMG_1401[1]

On Tuesday we handball with Michael. We played some games and learnt to throw a ball at a target to win points. Edie’s team won a race game but didn’t get into the final. Emmen’s team were in the final but did not win!

We also had an oral health talk with Arleen. She taught us why we should not have too much sugar and why we should clean our teeth!

On Wednesday we did Karate. We learned lots of different moves and we counted to 10 in Japanese!
We got to kick, block and punch our partner. We also learned a defence move, pressing on our partner’s elbow to get them to release us! It was really sore.

On Thursday we did rugby, even though Edie had to miss the end of the session. We worked with the P2s to run with the ball, move the ball around our waist 3 times, run to our team mate and pass the ball on.

On Friday we had a Health Week round up at Kabbalat Shabbat.

Our favourite thing of the whole week was the rugby session because we had never played rugby before and were desperate for a go!

Thank you to Miss Dunn and Mr Cook, we had a fantastic, healthy and fun week!

Our First Week Back!

Our First Week Back by Bismah and Chandan.

We are really enjoying our class novel!
We are really enjoying our class novel!

We were so  happy to come back to school because we could see all our friends and we could see Miss Jagger after such a long time!

We have been learning about Ancient Egypt and it has been fun learning about the past. We are making Egyptian amulets out of clay which will turn into necklaces. We even got to use gold paint to decorate the beads we made.

We looked at our mummified tomatoes and ours were quite squashed. We did not think they would go to the tomato afterlife!
They felt soft but were very wrinkly because the salt had sucked all the water.

In language we have been reading Supercat Vs the Chip Thief and so far it is really exciting! We have also learned about adjectives which are describing words.

In maths we have been going over our timestables. The Prisms have been learning about short division, the Spheres have learned about bar graphs and the Cuboids have been learning to do Venn diagrams! We have also all been using the computers to play games related to what we have been learning.

The weather has been nice so we have done some outdoor problem solving, we thought it was exciting, fun and brilliant.
We really enjoy learning outside!

We hope we get to do some more outdoor learning and we are really looking forward to health week!

A very busy term!

Primary 3 make Glasgow!

Primary 3 have had such a busy term!

Not only did we learn a lot in maths and literacy we also finished our Local Area topic and started The Egyptians!

Highlights from the term include our Messibat Siddur, which we were so proud of.

messibatsiddur

We all enjoy using our new green siddurim at Tefila and Kabbalat Shabbat each week.

One of our favourite weeks was World Book Week!

Throughout the school we celebrated our love of books with activities such as going on a Book Hunt around the school, paired reading with different classes, designing book tokens and even going a ‘Speed Read’!

Primary 7 hosted a Book Café for us to go and read, discuss books and chat about why they enjoy reading. This was our absolute favourite activity of the whole week!

On Friday we performed one of Roald Dahl’s revolting rhymes at assembly. The whole school found it really funny!

world book day

A very special moment was when we completed a sponsored run in memory of Noya. We did this with the Primary 7s in the park. It was a cold and rainy day but the run was very important and we all tried our very best.

Sponsored Run

Here we are doing our best Usain Bolt impression before we went to the park.
Some of us ran so fast we actually thought we could run in the Olympics!

We have been enjoying our Egyptian topic. Our favourite things were making mummies and mummifying tomatoes!

mumifying

We all hope we have mummified the tomatoes neatly enough to allow them to enter the “tomato afterlife”. The blue group even named their tomatoes after Pharaohs!

mummy class mummy

We also learnt a song about making mummies, it is a bit gruesome but we will sing it to you if you ask nicely!

We ended the term with the Sedar. We all had a lovely morning in the hall with the rest of the school!

sedar

We hope next term will be just as fun!

Atika and Abigail’s Week

Hi! This is Atika and Abigail from Primary 3!

We have learned lots this week.

Yesterday we discovered our new topic is Ancient Egypt. We looked at lots of picture in class and in I.C.T. we look at different websites. We even found a website with a clip telling us how to make a mummy! We heard that if a pharaoh dies they bring their servants into their tomb and they have to pass into the afterlife. We can’t wait to find out more about the tomb robbers.

In maths we practiced our times tables and we sang along to Percy Parker. Some groups have learned about time and some groups have been looking at volume.

In language we made some silly sentences with nouns and proper nouns. We also did some reading and comprehension activities.

New week we hope we are going to learn more about Egypt. We are so excited about Purim and that it is Book Week next week.

That’s all for now.

Atika and Abigail!

February News

As part of our “ Where We Live” topic, Primary 3 wanted to find out a bit more about the houses in our local area and also how towns and areas are planned.

Firstly we had a visit from Miss Beedie, a Town Planner at Glasgow City Council. She came in to talk to us about what her job entails and to take a look at the fictional towns we had planned in class – she was really impressed and thought some of us should come and work for her! We asked Miss Beedie a lot of questions. Bismah learned that the area of Newlands used to be a farm and Abigail discovered that property developers are not allowed to build in areas where foxes and badgers already live.

Our next visitor was Ms McGonigle, she is an Estate Agent in the West End of Glasgow. We all wrote a schedule for our own house and got to measure the corridor with a tape measure and a laser pointer, just like Estate Agents do when they are preparing to sell a house.  Leo found out that Ms McGonigle had sold Calvin Harris’s flat and that she helped some lottery winners buy a house! It was a fantastic afternoon!

We also took a walk in our local area and decided to visit Newlands Park to see how local people use the land around the school. We made our own maps of the park and sketched the school whilst we were out. We took a note of the different types of houses we could see and what they were made out of. We think red sandstone, semi-detached houses are the most popular around school!

Primary 3 have really enjoyed learning more about their local area and are looking forward to starting a new topic soon
