Outdoor learning – mapping

This week, we have been working with the primary 6’s from St Clare’s to begin our new Social Studies topic which will focus on the natural and social geography of our new school and surrounding area.

We began by investigating the outside of our school, sketching the building from a  bird’s eye view. This will develop our sense of place and also help us to create a final aerial view map, like the one below.

We will continue to develop our mapping and geography skills throughout this term by studying ordinance survey maps of the local area and rest of Scotland.

Maths Week Scotland

This week it is Maths Week in Scotland so we have been busy doing lots of different activities all to do with maths. We started the week by learning how we use maths is in our everyday lives and discussed all the jobs you need maths for…there were a lot like teacher, doctor, architect, engineer and even a rocket scientist!

We played lots of different games during the week like fractions loop cards, multiplication bingo and whole class mental maths competition games to improve our mental maths in a fun and active way. We also used technology to improve our maths skills by doing interactive games and activities on Education city.

Today the multipliers group were the teachers and they taught us how to find the perimeter and area of a shape. Then we all went outside with meter sticks, tape measures and Trundle wheels and had to find the perimeter and area of different objects in the playground. It was really fun to do outdoor learning and especially because it wasn’t raining, for once!

We really enjoyed maths week and practicing maths in lots of different ways.
