Skills Development Scotland – S2 School Pupils Event for Parents and Carers

We would like to invite you to an event at Barrhead Foundry on Tuesday 23^rd January 2018 between 4 pm and 7 pm for Parents and Carers of S1/S2 East Renfrewshire school pupils who are going to be choosing their school subjects.

The event is an opportunity for you to find out more about the work that we do with school pupils and how we support them to develop Career Management Skills. There will be three topics covered by speakers which will be presented at various intervals so that you can attend whichever ones suit you best. The programme is as follows:

Creative Modern Apprentice Applied Arts Scotland 

Length of contract – Initially 12 months, with potential for ongoing employment. 

The Role – Two different businesses based in Glasgow, Vanilla Ink Jewellery School and Studio, and Katie Lees Jewellery Designer and Maker, are offering an exciting opportunity for a young person keen to begin their career in the craft sector. You will be involved in all aspects of the day to day running of these two small craft businesses, gaining experience and an understanding of bench skills, batch production, product development, teaching, product photography for the web, event preparation, customer services, online sales and promotion. You will learn to work in the correct and safe manner within a busy jewellery workshop.

You will work towards a Modern Apprenticeship qualification in Business Skills for Craft as part of pilot project being run by Applied Arts Scotland and project partners, Skills Development Scotland.

Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund

Please find below information regarding a scholarship fund which has been set up through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland with the aim of removing the cost of a student loan preventing anyone from studying civil engineering. This is the result of a donation to the Institution by a retired solicitor.

Four awards of £4000 per year for young people aged 21 and under living in Scotland are made to allow them to study in Scotland. The award is open to full-time or part-time students as well as apprentices or students on day or block release from an employer. Each successful candidate receives £4000 per year for a maximum period of four years.

The closing date for applications is 31 March for courses beginning from September this year.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week

Scottish Apprenticeship Week is from 29th February to 4th March.

Glasgow Economic Leadership (GEL) Finance and Business Services (FBS) are supporting Skills Development Scotland (SDS) with the annual Scottish Apprenticeship Week (SAW) campaign.

Activities include:

• Tours to FBS companies from across the sector
• Teacher/Career Guidance Workshop – NEW (Thursday 3^rd March)
• Teacher Apprentice Visits (throughout week)
• Employer Modern Apprentice Event (employers only Wednesday 2^nd March)
• Parent Event – NEW (Tuesday 1^st March)

The tours provide young people with opportunities to; learn more about the participating company, look round the office environment, learn how companies recruit, including internship, graduate, school leaver & apprenticeship programmes and meet members of the      organisation.  They would be particularly helpful for any pupil considering a career in Finance and Business Services.

Concept Northern (one of the Challenge Fund projects) are holding an information day on Thursday 21^st January at their East Kilbride office between 10.00 – 3.00 pm, this will be targeting candidates with dyslexia who are interested in gaining a modern apprenticeship in the Construction/Railway industries.
