3d Structure Challenge

Today we took part in a 3d structure challenge as part of Maths Week.  The challenge was to build a structure with as many 3d shapes as possible.  We worked very hard in our teams to build structures that had vertices, edges and sides.

Well done for all your hard work this morning p3a!

Maths Week Scotland

In P3a this week we have been exploring the world of Maths for Maths Week Scotland. We made maths hats in class. To make these hats we had to use ginormous pieces of paper and fold the hats into different shapes like triangles, rectangles and squares. Once we had made our hats we had to decorate them with our Maths Learning Journey so far.

Our New Sound

Today we have been learning about the ‘y’ to make an i sound.

We worked very hard with our partners to follow the 5 finger steps to learn our new sound. We always enjoy our phonics lesson and working with our partners.

Being numerate helps us to function responsibly in everyday life and contribute effectively to society. It increases our opportunities within the world of work and establishes foundations which can be built upon through lifelong learning. Numeracy is not only a subset of mathematics; it is also a life skill which permeates and supports all areas of learning, allowing young people access to the wider curriculum.    (Education Scotland)

Monday 23rd September  – Family Numeracy and Maths Homework Challenge

Families can choose one activity (or more if you wish) from the grid and work on this together over the next two weeks.  How you record and share your homework is up to you! There are some suggestions on the grid but please feel free to be as inventive as you wish.  This homework will last two weeks. On Friday 4th October, the eldest child in each family should bring in their family homework and the pupils will get a chance to share their activity with the school community.  The homework should be carried out as a family and each activity can be simplified or extended to allow everyone to take part.  There are lots of real life challenges to allow our pupils to see the benefit numeracy and maths has on our everyday life.  These activities are designed to be fun, active and engaging for all our learners.  It will not only promote their numeracy, but it will also develop their problem solving, creativity and collaboration skills.

Please share your learning activities with us on twitter! @kirkhillPS and use our #

As part of our new topic on Monday the 23rd of September both P3a classes will be going on a walk in the local area.  During this walk we will be looking at our local environment and it’s amenities.  In a few weeks will be comparing our local area to Glasgow City Centre.

Bingo Homework Term 1  – Grids are also stuck in Homework Jotters

Instructions for Bingo Grid:

Colour in each box after you’ve completed the homework task, you can work towards a homework bingo by completing 5 tasks in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). You can use your homework jotter to compete any of your tasks, stick in pictures, paintings or photographs or you could even tweet us some pictures of you completing your tasks @KirkhillPS #p3homework. Aim to complete one spelling activity and one maths activity per week. The topic activities do not need to be completed every week and some tasks may take longer that one week. You do not need to hand in your jotter weekly, it is a multi-use jotter for across the curriculum which you are welcome to use for any of your activities. We will ask for the jotters to come in during consolidation weeks to update. We will use this grid until the October holiday. This term we would like you to read for enjoyment at home, please enjoy reading from your own books, the local library or you can borrow from the class library. Our spelling words will be updated weekly on our blog for you to learn. We hope you have fun doing your homework 😊.

Jotters will be handed out on Monday.

You will also see an overview of our Phonics for the first six weeks stuck in the jotter. Please ensure you hand in jotters on the 4th of October so we can update the grid after our consolidation/ assessment week.
