Investigating, Extending and Exploring in P1A

Art

In Art we have been learning how to draw detailed line drawings. We studied the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and enjoyed learning how to draw the famous ‘Mackintosh’ rose.

Problem Solving

We have been enjoying using our knowledge of different strategies to help solve various problems and are improving our skills at explaining to others what we have done to work out a solution.

ICT

In ICT we have been learning how to access the internet, using internet explorer or google chrome. We have been using search engines to find sites to consolidate our learning across a range of different curricular areas.

Music

In Music we have been introduced to the difference between rhythm and beat. We have enjoyed learning some new poems to demonstrate this.

Maths

We have been exploring the relationship between different numbers and using the symbols for greater than and less than to compare numbers. We are able to identify and sort odd and even numbers and can continue number patterns counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have also been looking at how we can use different coins to make the same amount and have been adding a selection of coins to check what is in our piggy banks or to pay for a range of items.

Literacy

We are really enjoying creating our own stories through play and writing about things we have done or places we have visited. We are extending our use of vocabulary and are keen to share our writing with others. We are able to select interesting facts from books or write about our favourite part from a story we have read. Within reading activities we are using skills such as prediction, finding information, sequencing events and answering in sentences.

IDL

Within our healthy eating topic we have been looking at food labels to help us sort food into healthy/unhealthy choices. We learned about how sugar and salt can be bad for our health if we eat to much of it and used our knowledge to create our own healthy meals. We have also been learning about different food groups and the importance of having a balanced diet.

P.1a enjoying learning!

Numeracy and Maths

We enjoy exploring shapes and shape patterns, and can describe shapes to our friends.

We continue to develop our knowledge of number,  investigating numbers up to 100, looking at patterns, numbers before and after, place value and how 2 digit numbers are made up of tens and units. We have also been practising our number bonds and solving addition and subtraction problems.

We also can recognise coins and lay out different amounts for price tags in our toy shop!

Literacy

We enjoy reading new texts independently! This includes fiction and non-fiction. We choose different texts to read and tell our partners about what we have read. Our knowledge of alternative sounds and common words help us with unfamiliar texts. We sometimes use the texts to do close reading work, finding information, and ordering the main ideas. We can create storyboards from the main ideas.

We also play games together. We read sentences not just single words as part of our games.

Health and Wellbeing

We discussed how to keep healthy and came up with lots of good ideas.

We then made class posters describing how we each experience these healthy ways to live and shared them with the class.

We wrote and illustrated how we exercise in different ways to keep healthy.

Religious and Moral Education

As the festival of Eid approaches we were lucky to have some P.6 girls come into our class and tell us about Ramadan and Eid.  We could ask questions too.

Outdoor Learning

We have been  exploring our school woodland area, looking for signs of a new season and discussing changes in the environment.

We also like to sit together and using props from outdoors create a class story, each person in the circle adding the next part of the story. We like to make our class story funny!

We also created artistic symmetrical pictures using the materials around us.

Well done P1a! Fantastic playing and learning!

We have been revising time, looking closely at the days of the week and months of the year. We are able to sequence these and tell the time to o’clock, we are challenging ourselves by telling the time to half past!

We have also been using our problem solving skills at the STEM table. We had to build a bridge that was able to hold a heavy rock.

Other Areas

For our topic, ‘Keeping Safe and Healthy’, we decided to look at how we can have a healthy diet.

We created our own ‘Eatwell Plate’, showing what we know about the different food groups.

We were able to sort a variety of food into healthy and unhealthy.

In French, we have been exploring colours!

Skills to School week!

We were so lucky to have lots of parent visitors who came to tell us all about how they use numeracy and maths in their jobs.

It was lots of fun to learn about what they do!

Thank you to everyone who visited us!

Awesome Learning in 1c

Numeracy and Mathematics

Last week we had the pleasure of having visits from parents who shared their knowledge with us on how they use all the different curricular areas within their job! It was fascinating to listen to their jobs. We have also been exploring symmetry and began learning about tens and ones!

We went on a Maths Treasure hunt around the entire school which was great fun! We managed to solve all the questions and even the bonus question too.

Literacy

We have been using non-fiction books to learn about facts and information. We are super confident in using the contents and index page to locate information.

We continue to read unseen challenging texts to practice blending and reading tricky words.

To help with our sequencing of Instructional Writing we were sequencing different events.

We are also learning alternative sounds!

We are so excited to share with you our learning about the Rainforest in our Assembly show next week! We won’t give too much away but we will show our amazing tents we were building for our ‘imaginary’ animals!

We were learning about different animal groups and went to the Woodland area to explore if we could find any mammals, amphibians, birds or insects.

We can’t wait to see you all next week at our class show Assembly!

Playing, working and learning together in P1a

In maths we have been using 2D shapes to create tiling patterns, while discussing the names and properties of the shapes we are using.

We have also been investigating numbers up to 100, looking at patterns, numbers before and after, place value and how 2 digit numbers are made up of tens and units. We have also been practicing our number bonds and solving addition and subtraction problems.

In literacy we have been learning about writing instructions for a range of different things. We looked at how we need to make a list of what is needed first and then describe each step using language such as first, then, next and finally.

In P.E we talked about different sports that use rackets and looked at how we can use rackets and balls within games and paired activities.

We decided for our new topic we wanted to learn more about being healthy and have come up with some great research questions that we are going to be looking into. They are………

Should we take medicines if we are not feeling well?

What kind of food is good for your health?

What happens to our bodies when we do not eat good food?

Why is it important to exercise?

Other things we have been enjoying,

measuring…….

reading……..

solving calculations……

writing and sharing stories……..

performing our show…….

working together……….

creating symetrical patterns……

And developing our ICT skills…….

Great Learning in P1B!

Welcome back to our blog!

We have been working hard, getting back into our school routine after the Easter holidays.

In maths, we continue to build on our number knowledge and our ability to use numbers flexibly.

We have been working together to solve problems including addition and subtraction.

We enjoy creating calculations for a partner to solve!

In literacy, we continue to explore a variety of texts on our own and with a partner.

Here we are sorting books into fiction and non-fiction. We even sorted the features of each such as, tells you information, has characters, has a context page and so on.

We are able to organise the letters of the alphabet in order!

We also continue to develop our skills of writing instructions!

We have been putting steps in order and then writing instructions using the pictures as an aid to help us. We are always careful to number each step and begin them with an opener!

In gym, we are now focusing on athletics!

We continue to explore different ways of moving our bodies, developing our throwing and catching skills and working collaboratively in a team.

Our new topic is all about ‘Keeping Safe and Healthy’, we discussed what we already know about being safe and healthy but also came up with questions of new things we would like to learn.

We decided that we wanted to learn about how to be safe in the car and how to be safe when crossing the road. This made us think lots about Road Safety and so we created posters to warn people of the dangers of being unsafe near or on the roads!

We now know how important it is to wear a seatbelt when we are in the car and to stop, look and listen for any vehicles anytime we prepare to cross the road!

Keep up the great work P1B!

The End of Term 3 Learning in 1c

Welcome back to Primary 1c’s blog! We can’t wait to show you what we have been learning and exploring in school.

A huge congratulations to Sophie and Ellis for making it through to the finals for Crookfur’s Got Talent. They performed and danced amazingly with so much confidence in front of the whole school. Well done!

ICT

Within ICT we have became confident in being able to log in, use different programmes such as ActivInspire and are now able to access Internet Explorer to access a website.

Now we are learning about Microsoft Word and how to use the different tools within this.

Literacy

In Literacy we continue to expand our knowledge about the properties of non-fiction books. We are able to locate information using the contents page and use the index page.

We are sorting out pictures that rhyme with the heading! We use our knowledge of sounds to determine if it rhymes.

We continue to practice tricky words from our Common Words to ensure we know how to read and spell it correctly.

We are also practising to solve the missing letters within an alphabet!

Within Writing, we have been learning how to write instructions. We know that instructions require numbered steps and openers.

On Monday, we wrote about making a Fruit Salad. Before this, we were using our listening skills as we recorded notes about making a fruit salad that would be used to inform our instructional writing.

‘Silly sentences’ is a fun game within Literacy we love to do! We have to make a sentence using random pictures shown to us. Our sentences show we can punctuate our sentences correctly.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We continue to practice adding and subtracting to 10 mentally!

At the easel, we were trying to beat the timer by completing all the sums on the board! We were able to beat the timer!

We are linking addition and subtraction with Money and are able to complete questions and word problems relating to this.

We are also linking addition and subtraction sums together by making fact families!

Ordering numbers to 100 was too easy! As a challenge we have been practising to order numbers to 1000 – which we can do too!

We are able to recognise different shapes and identify how many corners and edges it has.

We had to explore different shapes and identify its properties.

Learning Experiences across Indoors and Outdoors

In the construction area, we have been so inventive and creative in our creations. We have been building houses relating to our fact families within addition and subtraction and created houses for our animals!

Within the art area, we continue to use our colour wheel chart to help us create different colours by mixing paints together.

Outdoors we are building dens and continue to work as a team by listening to each others ideas.

We are mixing different paints together to create our desired colour.

We built and created a bird feeder to allow birds to each and drink water from P1!

This is the end of Term 3, however after the Easter Holidays we will come back ready and excited to learn more!

Have a great and safe Easter Holiday everyone!

P1a are confident individuals!

Valuing our friends

P1a were delighted to perform our assembly about Friendship to the rest of the school and to our special people who came to see us! We acted out the Rainbow Fish story and spoke about what makes a good friend.  We showed portraits we had drawn of our friends and some children read aloud their writing about a friend. We sang lots of songs but our favourite was ‘Count on Me!’

Literacy

In Literacy we are becoming more confident using known sounds, knowledge of tricky words and clues from the text to read unfamiliar texts. We like it when we can share reading stories with the older boys and girls.

We can search our texts to find information and  answer different types of questions, demonstrating our understanding.

We can sort words into phoneme groups and write sentences using some of the words. We try to remember a capital letter to start and a full stop to end the sentence. We stretch out the words to help us write them.

We also like to choose what we will write about in our Play Jotters.

Maths and Numeracy

We are  learning different words which mean ‘take away’ and sorting calculations.

We continue to practise our number bonds to 10 to know them off by heart and enjoy playing different games together to help reinforce the learning.

Well done P1a!

P1B Learning Adventures!

In literacy, we continue to explore a variety of texts.

We are then able to sequence a story and draw a picture of our favourite part!

We use our knowledge of single sounds, phonemes and common words every day to help us with our reading and writing. Here we are using our skills to create sentences using flashcards.

We have also been reading fairytale stories! We chose which fairytale we wanted to read, read some of it to our friends and then wrote about our favourite character from the story.

We use our alphabet mats to help us with our writing as well as common word mats.

We continue to build on our ability to segment and blend CVC words!

Here we are sorting out a mixed up sentence from our reading book!

We continue to revise our phonemes every day, here we are searching for ‘qu’ in a story. We used our special highlighter pens to highlight words with this sound and  together we wrote each word we found.

In maths, we continue to build on our number sense every day!

We have been sequencing numbers to 20 and also writing the number names.

We continue to work on number formation as it is important that we write our numbers correctly!

We continue to develop strategies for addition and subtraction, we are getting faster at solving these calculations!

We have also been revising our knowledge of shape, particularly 3D shape.

At the STEM table, we had the chance to create our own 3D shapes. We had a variety of materials in order to do this with real 3D shapes as well to help us.

It was quite tricky to make our shape stay up, but we used our problem solving skills to solve this!

As we have been learning about senses, we decided that we wanted to develop our sense of taste a little further.

We did this by making jam sandwiches!

We had to follow a recipe, ensuring that we followed each instruction in the correct order so that we made our jam sandwiches correctly.

It was lots of fun and our sandwiches were very tasty!

We then had to sequence each step and put them in the correct order, this will help us when we come to write our instructions for making a jam sandwich!

We have also been making senses posters!

We worked in groups to share what we know about our senses and gave examples of all of the things we see, smell, taste, touch and hear every day in school and outside.

Outdoor Learning

We have been so busy in our outdoor area these past few weeks.

In class, we read all about ‘The Stick Man’ so outside we made our very own stick man!

We even designed a front cover for our own stick man story!

We were also using our problem solving skills outdoors as we were working together to use the water pipe to shoot water over the rail!

We had to work together to ensure that we had enough water in the tub, we did this by filling up buckets of any water we could find from puddles and the tuff spot to keep the pump working.

We were also investigating how far or high the water could shoot out!

We also used bricks and chalk to create our own calculations! Here we are creating a ‘find the missing number’ puzzle for others to solve.

Well Done P1B!!

Our Learning Adventures in P1A!

Mathematics and Problem Solving

We are learning to use Problem Solving strategies such as act out the situation and look for a pattern to solve problems in maths.

We also went on a shape hunt looking for 2D shapes around our playground. We took photographs of what we found………………….

We are continuing to explore addition and subtraction looking at sorting calculations by their answer, solving word problems, playing games and using materials.

We have also been learning how to write numbers in words.

We have enjoyed learning about our dates of birth and looking at the order of the months of the year.

We have been using Carrol diagrams to sort and find information.

Science

In Science we have been learning about how to stay safe using electricity. We are able to differentiate between electrical and non-electrical items. We were also able to identify different dangers in pictures. We learned about battery power and how it allows us to use items without the need for wires.

ICT

We have been learning how to log onto a device in ICT with a username and password. We are beginning to open and close a word document. We have just started saving our work so we can open it later to edit it. We are aware that information on the internet is presented in different ways such as text, audio, images and video.

Literacy

In literacy we have been learning how to write a set of instructions for washing your hands. We looked at using words like first, next, and then to explain each step and made a list of what equipment we needed. In reading we are trying to read new words in a variety of different text. We have also been enjoying using our skills to write stories, sentences and words within our play and outdoors.

Music and Drama

In drama and music we have been exploring friendship through the story of The Rainbow Fish. We have also looked at what it means to be a good friend and how important it is to help each other.

World Book Day

We enjoyed taking part in a wide range of activities last week to celebrate world book day. It was great fun visiting P4 who read us stories and we made a super start to the whole school story by setting the scene and inventing two alien characters. We also had a visit from our mystery teacher Mrs Fry who read a story to us.

SSPCA

We took part in a workshop designed by the SSPCA and learned how to care for rabbits . We looked at how to hold rabbits correctly and learned about what they need to stay healthy and how important it is to care for animals correctly.

Here are some other pictures of us exploring and learning…………
