Investigating, Extending and Exploring in P1A

Art

In Art we have been learning how to draw detailed line drawings. We studied the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and enjoyed learning how to draw the famous ‘Mackintosh’ rose.

Problem Solving

We have been enjoying using our knowledge of different strategies to help solve various problems and are improving our skills at explaining to others what we have done to work out a solution.

ICT

In ICT we have been learning how to access the internet, using internet explorer or google chrome. We have been using search engines to find sites to consolidate our learning across a range of different curricular areas.

Music

In Music we have been introduced to the difference between rhythm and beat. We have enjoyed learning some new poems to demonstrate this.

Maths

We have been exploring the relationship between different numbers and using the symbols for greater than and less than to compare numbers. We are able to identify and sort odd and even numbers and can continue number patterns counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have also been looking at how we can use different coins to make the same amount and have been adding a selection of coins to check what is in our piggy banks or to pay for a range of items.

Literacy

We are really enjoying creating our own stories through play and writing about things we have done or places we have visited. We are extending our use of vocabulary and are keen to share our writing with others. We are able to select interesting facts from books or write about our favourite part from a story we have read. Within reading activities we are using skills such as prediction, finding information, sequencing events and answering in sentences.

IDL

Within our healthy eating topic we have been looking at food labels to help us sort food into healthy/unhealthy choices. We learned about how sugar and salt can be bad for our health if we eat to much of it and used our knowledge to create our own healthy meals. We have also been learning about different food groups and the importance of having a balanced diet.

Playing, working and learning together in P1a

In maths we have been using 2D shapes to create tiling patterns, while discussing the names and properties of the shapes we are using.

We have also been investigating numbers up to 100, looking at patterns, numbers before and after, place value and how 2 digit numbers are made up of tens and units. We have also been practicing our number bonds and solving addition and subtraction problems.

In literacy we have been learning about writing instructions for a range of different things. We looked at how we need to make a list of what is needed first and then describe each step using language such as first, then, next and finally.

In P.E we talked about different sports that use rackets and looked at how we can use rackets and balls within games and paired activities.

We decided for our new topic we wanted to learn more about being healthy and have come up with some great research questions that we are going to be looking into. They are………

Should we take medicines if we are not feeling well?

What kind of food is good for your health?

What happens to our bodies when we do not eat good food?

Why is it important to exercise?

Other things we have been enjoying,

measuring…….

reading……..

solving calculations……

writing and sharing stories……..

performing our show…….

working together……….

creating symetrical patterns……

And developing our ICT skills…….

Our Learning Adventures in P1A!

Mathematics and Problem Solving

We are learning to use Problem Solving strategies such as act out the situation and look for a pattern to solve problems in maths.

We also went on a shape hunt looking for 2D shapes around our playground. We took photographs of what we found………………….

We are continuing to explore addition and subtraction looking at sorting calculations by their answer, solving word problems, playing games and using materials.

We have also been learning how to write numbers in words.

We have enjoyed learning about our dates of birth and looking at the order of the months of the year.

We have been using Carrol diagrams to sort and find information.

Science

In Science we have been learning about how to stay safe using electricity. We are able to differentiate between electrical and non-electrical items. We were also able to identify different dangers in pictures. We learned about battery power and how it allows us to use items without the need for wires.

ICT

We have been learning how to log onto a device in ICT with a username and password. We are beginning to open and close a word document. We have just started saving our work so we can open it later to edit it. We are aware that information on the internet is presented in different ways such as text, audio, images and video.

Literacy

In literacy we have been learning how to write a set of instructions for washing your hands. We looked at using words like first, next, and then to explain each step and made a list of what equipment we needed. In reading we are trying to read new words in a variety of different text. We have also been enjoying using our skills to write stories, sentences and words within our play and outdoors.

Music and Drama

In drama and music we have been exploring friendship through the story of The Rainbow Fish. We have also looked at what it means to be a good friend and how important it is to help each other.

World Book Day

We enjoyed taking part in a wide range of activities last week to celebrate world book day. It was great fun visiting P4 who read us stories and we made a super start to the whole school story by setting the scene and inventing two alien characters. We also had a visit from our mystery teacher Mrs Fry who read a story to us.

SSPCA

We took part in a workshop designed by the SSPCA and learned how to care for rabbits . We looked at how to hold rabbits correctly and learned about what they need to stay healthy and how important it is to care for animals correctly.

Here are some other pictures of us exploring and learning…………

Leading our learning in P1A

We have been investigating forces to look at what makes toys work, move or go. We have discovered that some toys work by the force of being pushed or pulled. Some toys use more than one force and are powered by winding up, batteries or electricity. We have enjoyed sharing our ideas about our own toys and sorting a range of different toys.

In maths we have been working on subtraction, number bonds and number sequences. We have been using an interesting range of materials and resources to allow us to develop further our concept of number.

In literacy we are improving our writing and enjoy using our skills to write for a range of different purposes such as creating books, lists, sentences, cards and stories. We have also been sorting words by sounds and finding information in non fiction texts.

In drama and dance we have been using movement and mime to explore how we can create a range of different shapes with our bodies and tell a story through movement. We have been icicles, dinosaurs, puppets and stars. We have created a range of sequences working in pairs, small groups and as a whole class.

In P.E, through gymnastics we have been looking at developing our understanding of different types of rolls, jumping, using apparatus and controlling our bodies.

We hope you have enjoyed sharing our learning.

Happy New Year!

This week we have been enjoying sharing our holiday stories and we talked a lot about some of the new toys we got. We decided it would good to learn more about toys and are going to make it our next topic.

We started with a 3D mind map to look at what we already know and have come up with some great questions to help us learn more, such as ………

“How are toys made?” Harris

“What are toys made of?” Darcy

“What type of toys are there.” Tia

“How do toys move?” Steven

“Wind-up toys are from the olden days, what other old toys are there?” Joshua

We are looking forward to sharing the answers with you as our topic develops.

In maths we have been exploring number patterns, solving addition calculations, looking at number bonds, using mirrors and symmetry to draw the other half of a picture and exploring symmetry in nature whilst outdoors.

In literacy we have been writing sentences, we hear, carefully sounding out each word and creating some sentences of our own. Our increased knowledge of sounds, phonemes and common words is a great help. We have also been looking at rhyming patterns and using our reading books to find information in a text. We also wrote some fantastic stories about toys who were ill.

In the construction area a team of our finest archietects worked together to design and build a house!

In P.E we are developing our skills of object control and team work.

Exploring outdoors…….

“ I made pokemon cupcakes.” Sarah

“I am making a potion.” Zak

“This is how you climb down. “ Ben

“We are doing an experiment.” Subhan

“ Look at our wooden floor.” Toby

“ We made a slide.” Gaby

Here are some pictures of other things we have been enjoying this week…..

Learning and working together in P1a

In maths we have been enjoying investigating all the different ways we can make 4. We used cubes and wrote out all the number bonds we could create.

We have also been gathering information, using tally marks and creating picture graphs and bar graphs. We used the information to look at the most/least popular choices and compare different amounts.

We are improving our counting skills and worked together to check we had counted items correctly.

We used the 100 square to explore counting in 2s, 5s and 10s identifying different patterns and what number would come next in each sequence.

In literacy we have been continuing to develop our writing skills and have enjoyed sharing our stories and sentences with each other. We have used props, stories and pictures to help plan our writing and have come up with some great imaginative ideas.

We also enjoy playing reading games to develop our knowledge of words and sounds.

In P.E we have been looking at object control and practing skills such as dribbling, throwing and catching. We are good at working together and have developed teamwork skills through games such as stuck in the mud and tidy the room.

We enjoyed using a range of materials to create our own santas and had been keeping a close eye on what our class elf, Elfie has been up to each day.

We also had a teddy bears picnic to look at how to share items by cutting up and counting out. We talked about how to make things fair and had to half and quarter some items to give to each of the bears.

In our toy shop we have been creating prices  for our teddies and counting out coins to match the values.

We learn so much from working together,  solving problems, sharing ideas and helping each other.  Here are some moments we have captured……

We love learning in P1A

Numeracy and Mathematics.

We set up a toy shop in our class to learn about how we use money to pay for different things. We used 1p pieces to show different amounts.

We ordered numbers correctly to allow our rocket to blast off into space.

We enjoyed creating and extending patterns with the natural materials we found outdoors.

Literacy and English

We enjoyed exploring  different CVC words and took time to practice them and sound them out.

We used books to help create a list of rhyming words.

We made alliteration books.

We enjoy writing for lots of different reasons, using a wide range of materials and media.

We used different items from around our room to make numbers and letters.

We love working together and are great at team work.

Science – Space

We created a control panel for our space centre.

And enjoyed using the area to act out lots of different space scenarios.

Our Learning Journey P1A

It has been a busy time in P1a and we have all been enjoying working together and sharing our learning.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been further exploring number by making connections, completing sequences, displaying amounts, matching and creating our own number chains.

We are also enjoying using our knowledge to solve real life problems and look at how we use maths within so many different areas of our life.

We decided we wanted to learn more about Space and started by creating a 3D mind map to look at what we already know. Next we came up with some great ideas of what else we would like to find out. We came up with the following questions:

Why is it dark at night?

Why do astronauts bounce in space?

We talked about what we could do to help us investigate them and find out some answers.

Literacy

We are continuing to introduce letter sounds and are keen to use them to have a go at writing simple words and sentences. We are also taking care to form our letters correctly, looking at where individual letters start and finding them in new words and within our learning environments.

Outdoor Learning

We love learning outdoors and practicing our skills in many different areas of the curriculum. We enjoyed giving and following  simple directions, exploring the woodland area and using a range of natural materials to make words and letters.

We hope you enjoyed reading about our learning journey as much as we enjoyed sharing it with you.
