Busy Book Week

This week I have really enjoyed learning about multiplying by 10 and 100 and I enjoyed doing P.E. In P.E. we were focusing on general fitness where there was an obstacle course, a relay race, skipping ropes, balancing beam, jumping mats and ladders.  My favourite was the obstacle course. – Joey

I enjoyed our maths work because I love multiplying by 10 and 100. If you multiply by 10 you would have move the number one place to the left and therefore there would be a 0 at the end. If you multiply by 100 it is the same again but move the number 2 places to the left and it would have 2 0’s on the end. – Lily

I have enjoyed learning how to write a poem. I wrote my poem about my friend Olivia-Rose and it was about friendship. – Ellis

The first verse it:

She is funny when she falls,

Especially when she crashes into a wall

After that she still stands tall

My very best friend.

I enjoyed going to Eastwood High because it was fun meeting new high school pupils that I might be with in high school. I liked learning about angles in maths and enjoyed the angles treasure hunt because it helped me get better at it. – Isaac

I also really enjoy going to Eastwood for P.E. – Matthew

This Monday we were learning about our new science topic called Inheritance. Characteristics can be eye colour, hair colour, blood type, dimples, freckles, height, nose shape and size, skin colour and size of ears. These characteristics can be passed on from mum and dad or grandparents. – Joshua

I have learnt that all the angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees. – Lily-Anne

On Thursday we were doing coding on an app called Hour of Code. The game we were playing on it was a Minecraft one and you had to get past 12 levels. You were given a choice as to which character you wanted to be: Steve or Alex. We had to drag the arrows for forward, left and right to show direction. – Toby

This week I have really enjoyed learning about 2 digit times single digit in chimney calculations in a treasure hunt. For example 28 x 4 you need to do 4 x 8 and that is 32. You carry the 3 to the tens column and the 2 should go into the big equals sign at the units side. Then you do 4 x 2 which is 8. You plus the carried 3 tens which is 11. The final answer would be 112. – Subhan

I enjoyed the reading cafe because I read my favourite book and we had orange juice and snacks. I loved the orange juice. The book I was reading was James and the Giant Peach. – Roslyn

Some of us swapped books at the reading cafe and on the tables we had red or yellow tablecloths and on the red tablecloths there were tiny fake candles and on the yellow tablecloths there were yellow flowers in vases. Have a look at the school twitter page for our photos!- Olivia-Rose

International Mother Tongue Languages Week

On Monday 21st Feb it was Mother Tongue Language Day and we learned different songs in different languages. The P5’s song was in Spanish and it was very catchy and we had fun learning it. – Isaac

The P4’s were learning Italian and the Italian song was hard to learn but fun to sing. Our song was about a crocodile and lots of different animals. Il cane is Italian for a dog. – Joshua

Pecora in Italian means sheep, crocodrillo means crocodile and la rana means frog. – Arjun

The P1’s were learning British sign language, the P2’s were focusing on French, the P3’s were learning vocabulary in Punjabi and Urdu, the P6’s were doing Scottish Gaelic and the P7’s were learning some German. – Olivia-Rose

Every class has also made up labels for different rooms around the school in different languages. – Alexander

On Thursday we were recording an assembly with the whole school and we wore our country flag’s colours. Have a look on our Twitter page for photos! – Lily

Today, sadly is Miss Malloch’s last day so we are having a little party for her this afternoon. We are going to miss you and we think you are a really good teacher.  – P4/5

Super Significant Scientific Solar System Studies

On Wednesday we were focusing on the solar system and we were looking at how long all the planets take to orbit the sun in 1 year.  – Sam

It takes Uranus 84 Earth years to orbit the sun. – Finn

We have learned that it takes Earth 365 days to orbit the sun (1 Earth year). – Ellis

I remembered that Mars takes 2 Earth years to orbit the sun which we worked out was about 730 days. – Lily-Anne

In pairs or threes we tried to estimate how far we would get around the sun. A few people stood in a circle to represent the sun. Depending on the distance away from the sun, if the planet is closer like Mercury it would be much faster but if it was further away like Neptune then it would be much slower. – Alexander

Today we tried the activity again in the MUGA and Uranus was so far away from the sun, we had to go out of the MUGA. – Isaac

These activities helped us to find out the distance away from the sun and we also focused on the scale of the planets. – Arjun

Super Spectacular Scottish Determined Dancers

The first dance that we learned was The Canadian Barn Dance. It was so much fun and easy to learn. First you need to get yourself a partner. Then the tallest person would stand on the inside and put their right arm around their partner’s waist. The shorter person would put their left hand on their partner’s shoulder. – Lily-Anne

After that you step forward 3 times and then hop and then walk backwards for 3 and hop again. Then you go out to the side by stepping apart from your partner and clap, then you come back in, face your partner and hold their hands. – Amy

Then you should step to the side 2 times and then 2 steps the opposite way. After that you step hop (or waltz) in a circle for 4 steps. – Subhan

The next dance we learned was the Military Two Step. First you get into a pair and with your outside foot you go heel toe, heel toe and then take 3 steps forward with your partner. Then turn into your partner and repeat heel toe, heel toe and forward for three again. After that, face your partner and jump, kick, jump kick with opposite feet each time and then turn your partner round. Lastly, you waltz 4 times. – Sam

Today we learned a new dance called The Dashing White Sergeant. We had to get into a group of 3 and we joined up with another group of 3. Then we all held hands and jumped round in a circle for 8 and then we went the opposite way for 8. – Isaac

The person in the middle of each group of 3 turned to the left and did a little jump to each side and linked arms. The person in the middle turned and repeated this with their other partner. – Ellis

I really liked all the dances but my favourite was The Military Two Step because I like the jump kick part. – Eilidh

Crazy Christmas Fun Filled Week

In Art this week, we were painting our own designs or pictures using different colours  to show our emotions. – Nicole

The 2 colours that make me feel anxious and lonely (grey and aqua marine), I put to the edge of the paper so that you could still see them but not that much. I then put the bright colours (red, orange, yellow and green) that make me happy, in the middle. This represents that happiness can beat sadness. – Lily-Anne

On Thursday and Friday in Art, we are learning how to cross stitch.  To cross-stitch you need to have a piece of wood or felt with holes in it and weave the string through the holes. We were practising going through the holes diagonally and vertically. – Finn

This week we had out Christmas parties. We played some games and Maddie won one of the games. We also had crisps, sweeties and juice. It was fun and I was very tired after it. – Joshua

In Literacy, we read a poem called She Asked and it was about a snowman who wanted to read books and a girl brought him books and it made the snowman happy. The Evaluators were learning about characterisation. We used STEAL to help us. S means speech – we looked at what the characters were saying and if it meant anything to help us work out more about the character. – Arjun

T means thoughts and this is what the characters think and if it means anything about their personality. E stands for effects and it’s the effect of someone’s speech or actions on another characters. – Alexander

A stands for actions and this is what the characters do to one another and we were working out what this tells us about the character. L stands for looks and this is what a character’s appearance is like. – Carla

After they had finished filling out their STEAL sheet, the P5’s wrote an extension to the poem. We are going to try and record these being read aloud and post them on the blog or Google Classroom. – Amy

The Analysers and recorders drew out each event in the poem and put them in order to show the beginning, middle and end. – Maddie

On Wednesday, after school the P5’s sand some carols to lots of family and friends. My favourite was The 12 Days of Christmas because I liked that it had lots of quick phrases and was repeated. – Alexander

The Marvellous Magical Musical Mathematicians

In Maths, The Flawless Fractions and the Dedicated Decimals have been learning about data handling and have created their own surveys. My survey was about favourite colours. Red, purple and green were the least favourites and the most popular colour was blue. – Eilidh

We have also learned that a line graph goes up in lines rather than bars.  There is an x axis and y axis and we learned that the x axis is horizontal and the y axis is vertical. We also have to include a title and label our graphs. – Arjun

This week, the Marvellous Multipliers have been learning about equivalent fractions. Equivalent means equal so the fractions have to be the same amount. Here are some examples:

1/2  = 2/4

5/7 = 15/ 21 – Roslyn

The P5’s have been practising their carol singing and have 8 songs they have learned. This week, the P4’s have been singing a Christmas Alphabet song. After we’ve practised a bit more we are going to record it on video. At the start everyone has a line each to say and then we sing the whole song altogether. – Joshua

Today (Friday) we saw P2C’s nativity on Hump the Camel. I think it was a really good show and they have put in a lot of effort. Well done P2! – Arjun

Busy first week in December

This week we were learning about St Andrew’s Day. He died 1000 years ago. – Lily and Amy

We played a game of Kahoot based on St Andrew’s Day and we learned that he died on an X shaped cross. – Matthew

He died on an X shaped cross because he didn’t think he was good enough to die on the same cross as Jesus. – Carla

We have learned that St Andrew’s Day is always celebrated on the 30th November. – Arjun

P4/5 watched a video that explained what happened to St Andrew  and what he was doing. – Maddie

He taught Christianity in Poland, Russia and Greece. – Joshua

Andrew was killed because he told people about Jesus and they didn’t like it. – Lily-Anne

In Social Studies, we were learning about interior design across the decades starting with the 1950’s. – Ellis

In the 1970’s people had a lot of fake plants and greenery. In the 1990’s a lot of people had space themed blankets, pillow covers, curtains and light shades. – Subhan

In the 1960’s they also had lava lamps which would match with the kaleidoscope patterned wallpaper. – Sam

In the 1980’s people decorated their homes with lots of vibrant and quirky colours and they liked turquoise, pink and purple. – Joshua

In the 1950’s they had a lot of pink and floral patterns on the chairs. This is because the men were at work and the women were at home so the women made the houses look a bit more ‘girly.’ – Roslyn

We turned shoe-boxes into rooms and we chose which decade that we would like to make. We used paper straws, paper bags and cardboard. – Sophie

A couple of people tried to make 2 floors with 2 boxes. – Arjun

Take a look at what we created!

Christmas Expressive Arts

P4 were drawing pictures of a gingerbread house and rudolph yesterday. – Joey

When we were drawing, Mrs Ferguson said have 8 stripes on the candy cane and colour 1/2 of them red. She also told us to have 4 buttons on the gingerbread man and colour 1/4 of the buttons blue. We were practising fractions. – Subhan

We also had to split our door into 3 sections to show 1/3. We coloured in 5 stairs and 1/5 of them had to be green, 1/5 was yellow, 1/5 was red and the other 2/5 could be any colour you wanted. – Ellis

P5 have a Christmas Carol evening coming up very soon!

The P5’s have been practising 6 Christmas songs. All the P5’s gathered in a classroom to practise the songs to get it perfect! We also learnt Makaton which is sign language to We Wish you a Merry Christmas. – Lily-Anne

We were also practising Santa Got Stuck up the Chimney, Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. 2 songs that we didn’t know that well were The Three Kings and Silent Night which we will be learning today and next week. – Arjun

Book Week Scotland

This week is Book Week Scotland and we’ve been doing activities based on books. – Ellis

We have been reading a book called Look Up. It was about space and the Phoenix Meteor Shower. – Maddie

We were making meteors because the book was about meteor showers and this represented the book we were reading. – Roslyn and Alexander

We had a sheet of card and we cut it into 2 strips of different sizes, then we bent them in cylindrical shapes. After, we used art straws to connect them both together and taped the art straw to the card. – Finn

Before we put them into cylinder shapes, we decorated them with different colours and different shapes. After we made them all, we tested them with the lights on and off by throwing them and we were trying to see whose when the furthest and why. – Isaac

The meteors that went the furthest had longer cylinders. – Yujoe

As it is Book Week Scotland, we have had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) where we drop everything and read our books as this gives us a time to read our books in class. – Lily-Anne

Today we were making wriggling worms because in George’s Marvellous Medicine, George’s Grandma liked eating slug and worms. – Joshua

We made a medicine with gummy jellies, baking soda and water. We put enough water in until the baking soda dissolved. – Carla

When we put the jellies in the cup of vinegar, it started to fizz and bubble a lot. There was a chemical reaction. – Sam

Amazingly Arty Climate Party

This week in Art we were creating climate change art. – Nicole

We were trying to create pictures to relate to climate change because COP26 is happening right now so it is very relevant. – Alexander

We tried to use at least 3 different medias. Media in art is the materials you would use and some are pens, pencils, acrylic paint and water colour paint. – Eilidh

Other materials we used were coloured pencils, tissue paper and fake leaves. – Roslyn

We could also choose to use crepe paper. – Isaac

My favourite media to use was the water colour paint. – Sam

My favourite media to use was a fine sharpie pen. – Lily-Anne

We had all had different opinions on our favourite medias to use but the majority really liked using acrylic paint.
